Technical Specifications of Surge Protection Devices (SPD) for 230 / 415V AC 50 Hz power

supply for Industrial and Commercial buildings

Surge Protection Devices to protect the electrical and electronic equipments connected in the
mains power supply for the purpose of insulation coordination and protection
against transient over voltages shall confirm to IS / IEC 62305, NBC 2016, tested
according to IEC 61643-11 and VDE approved. Power Line SPD’s are to be
connected at the mains incoming panel and in addition Distribution Boards which
are more than 15 meters away from the incoming panel. For DB’s feeding power
to critical and sophisticated electronic equipment such as drive panels, UPS,
Lift/elevator equipment, power to fire fighting equipment, security and BMS
system panels etc, SPD’s must be installed ignoring the cable distance.

General Requirement:

 Type of Network – 3 phase, 4 wire (TT / TN-S) 230 / 415 volts

 Backup Fuse: Manufacturers recommended backup gL/gG – HRC fuses must be used
as backup protection for the SPD. If the panel is of fuse less design, SPD shall be
suitable for backup protection with Circuit breakers such as MCCB’s, MCB’s, ACB’s.
(SPD manufacturer shall submit type test certificate from VDE/KEMA/OVE about back up
protection)
 TOV withstand for 5 sec – higher than 438 volts (Line to N volt - 230+10% X √3)
 TOV withstand for 120 minutes – All SPD’s which need gL/gG HRC fuse back up shall
withstand TOV of up to 438 volt as specified in IEC 61643-11 and 12.
 Connecting Wire Length: Connecting wires including the backup fuses shall be less
than 250 mm as specified in IEC 60364-5-53 and IEC 61643-12.
 Compartment and isolation: SPD as well as backup fuse shall be in separate
compartment if DIN rail SPD is used with backup fuse. Compartment is not mandatory for
BUSBAR mounted type SPD’s. Power panels with high power capacity incoming shall
use SPD’s tested to withstand short circuit breaking capacity of 65 KA or more.
 Guarantee and Warranty: BUSBAR mounted SPD’s in high power panels shall have 10
years warranty and all DIN rail mounted SPD’s shall have 5 years warranty.
 SPARKGAP SPD’s shall not be used in application where protection is necessary for a
semiconductor

Class 1 SPD for Mains Incoming Panel (From 400 amps and above)

Protections at the main incomer of the power supply system at the power panel after the incoming
breaker. The SPD at this level shall be suitable to mount directly on the earth bus bar or on
the mounting plate fixed close to earth bus bar to ensure least possible wire length for
connection. 4 numbers of SPD for the connection between R,Y,B, N to Earth bus bar shall be
used

BUSBAR Mounting and Connection of SPD

CLASS1 / 2 SPD at Sub Distribution Board (SDB)/LT Panel

This protection is required only if the distance between mains incoming panel and Sub-Db is
more than 15 meters. SPD need to be installed at the sub DB / LT panel after the incoming
breaker. The SPD at this level shall be suitable to mount directly on the earth bus bar if the
panels are of high current / high breaking capacity (more than 400 amps and / or more than
35 KA). Specification of these SPD’s shall meet the requirement of mains incoming panel.
For sub DB’s of 250 amps and below, DIN rail mounted SPD’s can be used. 4 numbers of
SPD for the connection between R,Y,B and N to Earth shall be used

Class 2 SPD at Equipment Level (UPS, MCB DB’s for CNC machine/Drives, fire
fighting panels etc)
SPD need to be installed at the sub DB / LT panel after the incoming breaker. DIN rail mounted
SPD’s can be used. 4 numbers of SPD for the connection between R,Y, B and N to Earth
shall be used

Connection Type: 4 nos SPD from R,Y,B,N to PE or 3 nos between R,Y,B to N and 1 no between
N to PE
Nominal Voltage: 230 volts
TOV withstand 120 minutes: 435 volts
Nominal Discharge Current (8/20μS): 20 KA

Voltage Protection Level: < 1500 volts
Backup Protection: 100 amps gL/gG HRC fuse (For panels with higher incoming and no chance
to use fuse shall select SPD suitable to work with Circuit Breaker)
