4. Acquiring the Satellite Signal

What to take into consideration when pointing the dish
1. Replacing the Outdoor Equipment
a) Disconnect/Turnoff the power supply for the Hughes Modem.
b) On the antenna, disconnect the “TX Cable from the BUC” (1) & the “RX Cable from the LNB” (2).
Thereafter remove the HN radio assembly from the antenna by removing “two Screws/Bolts” (3) & (4)

4
3

c) Loosen the “screw” (5) & (6) with the screwdriver.

2
6

d) Remove all the “four screws” (7) with the Allen-key. Please retain the screws as these are required for
installing the new BUC onto the assembly.

3
e) After this remove the “HNS BUC” (8) from the assembly.

f) Install the “new BUC” (9) on the assembly by using the “Allen-screws” (10)

10

4
g) Tighten the “clamp screw” (11) as shown in picture.

11

h) Install the new assembly onto the antenna & tighten the “two screws/bolts” (12) & (13).
Also connect the “TX Cable to the BUC” (14) & the “RX Cable to the LNB” (15).

2. Replacing the Indoor Equipment

The “TX Out” connects to the transmitter (BUC) on the dish. “RX In” connects to the receiver (LNB) on the dish.

a) Please note the cable configurations from the HNS modem – “TX Cable” (1), “RX Cable” (2) &
“Data Cable” (3).

b) Now plug in the cables on the iDirect modem (in the same fashion as above) – “TX Cable” (1),
“RX Cable” (2) & “Data Cable” (3).

3. Connecting to the modem
a) Connect a RJ45 LAN cable from the “LAN port” (1) on the modem direct to a PC or laptop.

b) On the X1 modems, DHCP is enabled out of the box. You will therefore need to make sure that PC
network card is set to obtain IPs automatically.

c) Follow the IP address written at the back of the modem to access the modem or you can check the IP
address of the modem via command prompt.
Open a command prompt (Start > Run/Search > type: cmd) and type the following command: ipconfig

The “Default Gateway” IP (1) is the modem IP address. You will use this IP to access the modem Web interface.
7
d) In your web browser(preferably internet explorer) open the modem web interface.
Type the IP address(provided on the back of modem) in the browser for example: http://10.205.19.1

8
e) Enter the username & password :
User: admin
Password: orioniDirect

4. Acquiring the Satellite Signal
a) Before moving ahead download the iSite & read the iSite user guide as well. As this is required for the
performing the site acceptance tests with the satellite operator.
http://www.orionsat.com.au/idirect/.
b) Login to the modem, open up the “Commissioning” (1) tab in the web interface and click “Antenna
Calculator” (2). In case you are aligning the dish yourself, then you need to refer the satellite look angles
on the modem. Alternatively you can calculate your estimated dish pointing angles at
http://www.dishpointer.com. Select the Satellite: 91.5 Measat-3B

c) Start pointing the antenna as per Satellite look angles & open up the “Commissioning” (3) tab in the web
interface and click “Antenna Pointing” (4)

10
d) Start doing the antenna pointing by acquiring the desired angles i.e., Elevation, Azimuth and
Polarisation.
For adjusting:
Elevation Angle use the inclinometer or the Scale given on the antenna.
Azimuth Angle use the real compass or you can use the compass available on smart phones.
Polarisation Angle rotate the polarisation in clockwise or anticlockwise direction based on the desired
angle. For details refer to this article http://www.satsig.net/polangle.htm

e) As you are doing antenna pointing, the graph will start showing the data; use this display to adjust the
dish to get the reading/values as high as possible in the green.
On your modem as well on this screen the RX, TX and NET lights(LED) will go green.

Note : 1) After or during acquiring the Satellite Signal please follow the instructions on “Orion iDirect Conversion
Guide” document and call ORION NOC team on +61 8 6263 4020 or email at help.desk@orionsat.com.au for
moving ahead with the site acceptance tests.

2) Close the WebiSite and try to logon onto the modem with the iSite as well.
