The Art of Elysium is a non-profit organisation
founded by Jennifer Howell in 1997. They believe in
using art as a catalyst for social change. Their “full
circle” approach engages emerging artists in inspiring
acts of service that forge opportunities for them
to share their creativity in diverse and meaningful
ways with individuals of need. They support and
acknowledge their volunteer artists by providing
platforms to showcase their art within the community.
The Art of Elysium thrives on the ability to
provide an emotionally and physically safe
space for the mutual exchange between artist
and individuals in need. The Art of Elysium’s
programs for hospitalized youth, special needs
education centres, homeless shelters, elder care homes
and hospice care facilities include Fine Arts, Fashion Design,
Music, Media/Theatre Arts and Arts-Based Self-Esteem Programs.
Art facilitates a freedom to think about life in ways never thought before.
Their programs are designed to support individuals in the midst of difficult
emotional life challenges like illness, hospitalization, displacement,
confinement, and/or crisis by providing a variety of creative tools to
help them realize relief, happiness, liberation and self-empowerment
through exploration and expression in social and collaborative ways.

SIERRA LEONE
Shine On Sierra Leone is an evolutionary non-profit organisation
creating programs that integrate sustainable healthcare,
education, microfinance, and development as four parts of a
greater whole to ultimately create the future of an independent
Sierra Leone. For nearly a decade, SOSL has provided a
supreme education to 400 students each year at the flagship
Muddy Lotus Primary school. Once ranked #736 out of 736
schools, Muddy Lotus is now ranked #2 in the eastern region!
Today, in Sierra Leone, the average individual over the age of
25 has received less than three years of schooling. The typical
junior high school classroom is filled with approximately 54
students. Between Sierra Leone’s civil war and the recent Ebola
outbreak, the country now confronts an immense shortage of
teachers. The Sierra Leonean government will need to increase
capacity by 54% to achieve the goal of universal primary school
education in the country. Beyond this, schools are scarce. A
child can walk up to 9 miles to and from school each day to for
the benefit of the education outlined above. Torrential rains,
unsafe roads and and other predators mark this18-mile daily
walk as the beginning of the end of education for most students.
As an answer, Shine On Sierra Leone is building an
entrepreneurial based secondary school that will be within
one mile of hundreds of students. While many schools
in developing Africa are concerned solely with academic
achievement, SOSL understands the importance of
concurrently fostering an empowered relationship with
one’s self. The Muddy Lotus Secondary School will provide a
comprehensive education to 180 students from the 7th through
12th grade levels via the Wholistic Education Curriculum
(WEC). The WEC will be the catalyst for creating future
generations of self-sustaining Sierra Leoneans who are free
from aid-dependency and its associated, debilitating mindset.
This non-traditional, revolutionary approach to education
will serve as a conduit for these young people to become
powerful, conscious, self-actualized stewards of service
and transformation for their country and the world at large.
It is the synergy between inner-development and innovative
academic education that forms the template to create an empowered
individual who has the capability to transform a country, the world,
and most importantly, transform one’s self.

SUMBANDILA
Focused initially in northern South Africa, the Sumbandila vision, through
its educational scholarship and mentorship program, is to transform the
lives of underprivileged children with exceptional potential and to create
entrepreneurs and leaders who make significant contributions to society
and their own communities.The Sumbandila mission is to provide these
deprived children, mostly from rural communities, with a high quali-
ty secondary education alongside a strong mentorship programme, nur-
turing both leadership potential and the entrepreneurial spirit whilst
encouraging social responsibility and awareness. Their potential is de-
veloped through both academic education and practical experience,
empowering them with the belief and the ability to make a difference.
Both Western and African values are encouraged – “Service in Leader-
ship” and “Ubuntu: becoming a person in and through other people.”
Hidden in the rural villages of Limpopo Province you will find the real
face of poverty in South Africa. They are the old dumping grounds for
people who didn’t fit the needs of the Apartheid economy, and to a
very real extent, they still serve the same purpose. It is the old, the job-
less, the young frustrated school-leavers and the children who live
here. These children are hungry, very often literally so, but more so
for the opportunity to make life different – for themselves, their fami-
lies and their villages. Sumbandila exists to help some of them get there.
The Trust seeks out the brightest and most deter-
mined of these children as they complete prima-
ry school, and offers them support for their entire
secondary education. For the select few, these full
scholarships cover tuition fees in the best private
schools, housing in dedicated hostels, mentoring,
counselling, clothing, school books, and all food and
other basic daily needs. Computers and extra books
are also provided for, as well as educational software
and additional lessons. In addition, through a part-
nership with Study Trust which has a long and proven
record in this field, there is an outlier programme for
a few more of these bright children who were unable
to gain one of the precious few full scholarship plac-
es, providing financial support for Saturday and Va-
cation Schools, including books and transportation.
