Through the use of advanced circuitry, the MSD 10 combines the best offerings of a CD
ignition with the best features of an inductive ignition and presents it in one unique ignition
package.

An MSD Pro-Power Coil, the CD coil, and the Coupler Coil, a high performance inductive
coil, are used with the MSD 10. The coils run in parallel, sending two voltages that work as
one. The CD coil primarily is responsible for ionizing the spark plug gap, then the current
from both coils produce a high level of sustained spark.

IMPORTANT: Inspect the part number of the Coupler Coil. It must be PN 8209R. Originally,
this Coil was PN 8209, but was revised and it must be PN 8209R. This running change also
affected the wiring on the Ignition Control .

The decal describing the coil wiring on the MSD 10 Ignition should be silver and black (on
the left side of the box). It is also noted as to being the correct decal to use with the updated
PN 8209R Coupler Coil. Figure 1 shows the correct decal and the new Coil.
This label must be used with the PN 8209R Coil

MOUNTING

Mount the the Ignition Control in a position away from direct engine heat sources. Using
the Ignition as a template, mark the location of the mounting holes. Remove the unit and
drill the holes using a 3/16" bit. Install the vibration mounts in the holes, then mount the
Ignition using the supplied lock washers and nuts.
Mount the coils in a position away from direct engine heat sources. Mount the Pro-Power
Coil in any position with the supplied vibration mounts (Instructions included). The Coupler
Coil can be mounted in any position with the medium vibration mounts. Make sure all of
the wiring harnesses reach the components.

TWO STEP

The Two Step feature provides you with two rev limits;
one for overrev protection and the other to activate on
the starting line for use during the launch.
The Two Step is controlled by Yellow wire and is
connected on the left side terminal strip. When the Yellow
wire is grounded, RPM Module 2 is activated. When the
ground is removed, Module 1 is activated.

For example, to activate a lower limit when the line lock

or trans brake is applied, splice the MSD’s Yellow wire
into the wire between the switch and solenoid (Figure 6).
The Yellow wire will be grounded through the solenoid
wiring until the switch is activated. When the circut is
activated, ground is removed from the yellow wire and
Module 1 is activated.

KILL SWITCH

This feature can be used as an emergency ignition kill or

as a momentary kill used with air shifters. Use the Brown
wire on this circuit. When it is grounded, the ignition is
killed. Figure 6 Two Step Wiring.

TROUBLESHOOTING

If the vehicle is not running correctly or fails to start, check all of the wires and connections.
After checking the wires, perform the following test:

WHEN TRIGGERING WITH

THE WHITE WIRE:
1. Turn the ignition OFF. Remove the
coil wire from the cap and install a POINTS TERMINAL
spark tester or set the terminal about
1/2" from ground.
2. Turn the ignition ON. Do not crank
the engine.
3. Disconnect the WHITE wire of the WHITE
Ignition from the distributor or WIRE
amplifier trigger wire and tap the
wire to ground several times. Each
time the WHITE wire is lifted from GROUND
ground, a spark should jump from Figure 7 Checking for Spark with the White Wire.
the coil wire to ground. If there is no
spark continue with the Checking
the Coils procedure.

WHEN TRIGGERING WITH

THE MAGNETIC
CONNECTOR:
1. Turn the ignition OFF. Remove
the coil wire from the cap and
install a spark tester or set the
terminal about 1/2" from
ground.
2. Disconnect the magnetic
pickup connector from the
distributor or crank trigger.
3. Turn the ignition ON. Do not
crank the engine.
4. Take a short length of bare wire
and short and break across the
GREEN and VIOLET wires of
the connector. Each time the
short is broken (the jumper
removed) a spark should jump Figure 8 Checking for Spark with Magnetic Pickup.
from the coil wire to ground.
If there is no spark continue with
the Checking the Coils
procedure.

Checking the Coils

This procedure will help determine if there is a problem with either coil.
1. Make sure the correct wires are connected to the coils. If the polarity of a coil is reversed
the ignition will still fire the engine but it will not be at full operating capacity.
2. Remove a spark plug wire from a spark plug. It is recommended to use a clip-on spark
tester or secure the wire to where the terminal is half inch from ground.

WARNING: Do not disconnect the Pro-Power Coil when the engine is running. Damage to
the Ignition system will occur.

3. Disconnect the BLUE and RED wire connector going to the Coupler Coil. Leave the
ground wire attached.

WARNING: If the Coil Coupler ground wire is not attached, injury or damage will occur.

4. Crank the engine and observe the spark. If there is spark, continue to step 5. If there is no
spark, check for spark at the coil wire going into the distributor cap. If there is still no
spark, the CD coil is at fault. If there is spark at the cap, but not at the plug, the problem is
in the distributor. Inspect the cap and rotor.
5. If there is spark, let the engine start. The Pro-Power coil primarily handles the starting and
idle rpm.
6. Bring the engine up to above 1,000 rpm and plug the Coupler Coil wires back in (the RED
and BLUE wires). When the Coupler Coil is connected, there should be obvious differences
in the spark. The spark should now be wider and glow. If there is no difference in the
spark, the Coupler Coil is at fault.
