Francis Bacon: A Brush with Violence

1. The main idea of this film was to tell the story behind the violent paintings by Francis
Bacon and how his personal life impacted them.
2. Many other films or documentaries excluded things such as him being a homosexual and
the tragic events that followed his various partners.
3. The directors purpose was to describe Francis Bacon and how he expressed himself
through his extremely raw and grotesque art.
4. One choice of audience could be individuals interested in the manner in which Bacon
painted and why they were described as so “violent” and emotional discharged.
5. One of the most relevant details the director uses to backup his claim of the “violent” art
that Francis Bacon did was by including these raw images in the documentary.
6. The most prevalent in the film is Ethos because of the various people the director brought
as a part of the documentary to backup his claim of certain occurrences.
7. A possible theme for this film could be “Violent Art” because that is overall what this
documentary was mainly about. It was to uncover the dark details behind each of Bacon's
paintings.
8. This film helped me understand a bit of the way Francis Bacon's mind worked when
dealing with his art. He was a borderline alcoholic and never really knew what he was
doing unless it involved his art specifically.
9. I wouldn’t change an element of the film.
10. Francis Bacon has a very interesting way of making viewers of his paintings contain a
brutal and dark feeling. Bacon was an ideal example of being able to capture emotion,
both good and bad, especially bad in his case, and put it into paintings. He surpassed
many limits by drawing religious figures in a raw manner. Although he had many issues
in his persona, this being his problems as an alcoholic, dealing with physical abuse from
his sexual partners and many others he still left a big imprint in the world of art.
