SHIPPING INSTRUCTIONS FOR

5GDY106 MOTORIZED WHEEL

SCOPE
This publication explains the procedure for preparing the GDY106 Motorized Wheel for shipment. Included are
methods for locking the rotor, prep for shipping, securing the motorized wheel to the shipping skid, securing the motor-
ized wheel/skid to the flatbed, and the dimensions for building the skid.

ROTOR LOCKING ARRANGEMENT

CAUTION: Do not turn the rotor when the locking bolt is in place. Bearing and rotor damage may result.

NOTE: If assembled Motorized Wheel is to be transported a distance necessitating the use of a shipping
skid, the rotor must be locked.

NOTE: Numbers in parentheses refer to Figure 1 unless otherwise specified.

1. Place two bars (3) behind the brake adapter (4). Align the two bars with two of the holes in the brake adapter.

2. Install shipping bolts (5) through two of the holes in the brake adapter (4) against the bars (3).

3. Tighten the shipping bolts against the bars (3) with 30 ft.–lbs. of torque.

4. Paint the heads of the shipping bolts yellow.

5. Attach a WARNING tag (2) to each of the two bars (3) with a tie wrap (1), or connect the locking bars with one tie
wrap and a WARNING tag.

PREP FOR SHIPPING

1. Drain oil from the transmission.

2. Ensure that the rotor locking device is installed.

1. Place the shipping skid (3) on two pieces of scrap lumber. (This is to allow banding.)
WARNING: The weight of a complete GDY106 less brakes, tires, rims and tire mounting hardware is
approximately 40,000 lbs. Use the proper crane, cables, and devices when moving the wheel motor.
2. Lift the motorized wheel using two heavy duty hoist rings through the flange holes and a chain sling around the
hub. Use lifting cables rated for a load of at least 40,000 lbs.

NOTE: An alternate way of lifting the motorized wheel is to use two chain slings, one between the flange
and the brake and one around the hub for straight lifting. Do not lift AC Wheel with the lifting lugs on the
GEB16 motor or by using chain slings around the motor.
WARNING: If the cables used for lifting the wheel motor are not in a vertical alignment the resulting ten-
sion will be higher than 40,000 lbs. Use lifting cables rated for the appropriate load in these cases.
3. Place the motor on the skid: the bottom of the flange fits into the slot and the wheel hub rests on the curved part
of the skid cradle.
4. Cover the parking brake end with sheet plastic.
5. Secure the motorized wheel to the skid with two metal shipping bands as follows:

a. Place the flange–end band (1) around the 5GEB16 motor.

b. Place the wheel hub–end band (4) around the wheel hub and skid, centered with the skid cradle.

SECURING MOTORIZED WHEEL/SKID TO FLATBED

1. Lift the skid (with motorized wheel secured to it) with an overhead crane and place the skid on the flatbed.
2. Secure the motorized wheel and skid to the flatbed using the proper techniques.
3. Place a tarp over the motorized wheel to help protect it from adverse weather conditions.

BUILDING THE SHIPPING SKID

Build the shipping skid to the dimensions shown in Figure 3.
