I live in Chinatown area or Pecinan in Semarang. It is a very crowded place. There are many kelenteng (temples)
here. One of them is Tay Kak Sie Temple in Gang Lombok which people visit regularly.
Not far from the temple, there is a popular tourist attraction which can only be found at night, Semawis night
market. The name Semawis is derived from a Javanese term which means everything is available here. Yes, we can really
find many kinds of things here, ranging from specialty foods, to Feng Shui consultation, to karaoke.
However, my favourite place that I always visit when I have a spare time is Pak Suharto’s workshop. The
workshop is next to the Chinatown gate students. In his workshop, he teaches his students to paint using Chinese ink.
The ink is made from pine wood. People come to Pak Suharto’s workshop to order paintings, too. I love watching Pak
Suharto drafting and painting his objects.

EASTER ISLAND
Easter Island is in the South Pacific, 3.700 km from the coast of Chile. On this Island, there are 600 large statues.
We don’t know who built them, but they are probably constructed between 1150 and 1500. We don’t really know
why they are there too.
A Norwegian explorer, Thor Heyerdahl, believed that they were built by people from South America. To prove
this, he made a simple raft and sailed there, all the way from Peru.
Archeologists think that the statues represent dead tribal leaders. We don’t know why the statues were left
alone on the island. Perhaps the builders were killed by a disease or war. Perhaps they used all the natural
resources on the island. There are many unanswered questions about Easter Island.

The earth receives heat from the sun and reflects some of this heat into space. Carbon dioxide and other

greenhouse effect.

The Siamese Cat


Many years ago in the kingdom of Annam, the king loved a rare Siamese cat so much. The cat slept in a silk pillow
and always ate delicious foods. But the king was a ruthless man. He did not provide his people enough food or
clothes. The people were unhappy with the king but remained silent for fear of his punishment. The king’s adviser
despised him. He secretly devised a plan to teach the king a lesson. One day, the adviser used his access to steal
the cat. He brought the cat home and started to train the cat to eat the same rotten food as the Annam people
did. After several days without eating, finally the cat ate the food. The adviser repeated the same training every
day until it got used to the new food.
Soon the king found out that his beloved cat had been stolen. He quickly suspected his adviser and found the cat at
his home. He put the adviser into trial for stealing cat. The adviser was however very clever. To prove the cat as
his, he asked the king to bring two bowls, one with delicious and one with rotten foods. The cat directly went to
the bowl with rotten food. He then claimed the cat as his cat. The king however still had adviser arrested and
imprisoned. This story then spread over the kingdom which inspired Annam people to protest their king.

Once, a fisherman named Batara Guru Sahala lived in the Batak Land. One day, he caught a fish. He was
surprised to find that the fish could talk. It begged Sahala to set it free. He did accordingly.
As soon as the fish was free, it changed into a woman. She was so beautiful that Sahala fell in love at once.
He asked her to marry him. The woman agreed to marry Sahala. However, she told him that he must never let out
the secret that she was once a fish. Sahala promised that he would not tell anyone about it.
They were happily married and had two daughters. Every morning Sahala went out fishing. One day, his
daughters brought him his lunch. However, instead of bringing the food to their father, the two girls ate it. When

was very upset. Although Sahala apologized her, she would not forgive him for breaking his promise.

said that the hole became the Toba Lake.
