Speech disorder is a disorder that affects the ability of someone didn’t produced
un-normal speech. One of the speech disorders is stuttering and it can be reflected in one
of the contestants in the televised talent show, America's Got Talent. The writer chose
that one contestant on the show as he depicted stuttering as language disorder. Is named
Drew Lynch as a contestant. Based on the reasons stated before, the researcher were
analysed: (1) The disfluency patterns produced by Drew Lynch’s on America’s Got
Talent 2015 and (2) The types of disfluency produced by Drew Lunch’s on America’s
Got Talent 2015.
This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. This data obtained were
analysed by using theory of psycholinguistics (Aitchison 2003), Stuttering (Sleeper,
2007), Disfluency Patterns (Lickley, 2002), and Types of Disfluency (Zebrowski, 2003)
to analyze the data. The data found 53 utterances in total collected from Drew is utters on
America’s Got Talent 2015. The procedures for analyzing the data by categorized,
classified and discussed the data were identified.
The data findings show that there were 4 types of disfluency patterns. They were
substitution, insertion, deletion, and repetition. Insertion, deletion, and repetition occur
the most of disfluency it happens in his utterances that substitution is only one was
identified. And the types of disfluency into two categories; between – word and within –
word disfluencies. There were four types of between – word disfluencies interjections,
phrase repetitions, revisions and multisyllabic whole – word repetitions. There were four
types of disfluency repetitions of individual sounds/syllable, prolongations of sounds,
block/silent pauses, monosyllabic whole – word repetitions. In conclusion, the types of
disfluencies mostly were uttered which are phrase repetitions and monosyllabic whole –
word repetitions that indicated as Drews’ disfluency to create jokes.
As a suggestion, future researchers could consider exploring the neurogenic
stuttering with the types of behavior stuttering and the causes of the disfluency
phenomenon surrounded the environment within us. This would give us the deeper
insight of the stuttering phenomenon.
