Lecture Summary

Lecture No.:- 1

Date:-18/07/2017

Time:- 9.00-10.00 am

Broad Topic:- Introduction of Physical Systems, Requirement of Mathematical Model,

Steps in Mathematical Modeling, Practical Examples of Mathematical Models and Design
variables.

Lecture Description:-

The aim of this lecture was to demonstrate the need of mathematical model by considering
several practical examples of mechanical design and analysis. Also the steps involved in
transformation of any physical phenomenon into mathematical model were illustrated by taking
an example of modeling of static response of pressure vessel under thermomechanical loading.
Different daily life examples were also taken to create interest of students into the subject.
Lecture No.:- 2

Date:-22/07/2017

Time:- 9.00-10.00 am

Broad Topic:- Introduction to Analytical and Numerical Methods Involved in the Calculation of
Response of Physical System, Requirement of Approximation Methods, Introduction to Finite
Element Method (FEM), History and Development of FEM, Basic Steps of FEM.

Lecture Description:-

The aim of this lecture was to introduce the students with analytical and numerical methods by
identifying their requirements while predicting the physical response of any system. To
demonstrate the need of numerical methods an example of 1-D rod under uniformly distributed
loading conditions is considered and the equilibrium equations were identified using the
elementary mechanics of solids. Another example of calculating the value of perimeter for circle
was also taken to understand the phenomenon of discritization. Different type of numerical
methods were illustrated one by one and advantage of FEM over other numerical methods were
also stated. The history and development of FEM were also discussed.
Lecture No.:- 3

Date:-24/07/2017

Time:- 9.00-10.00 am(B)/12.00-1.00 pm(A)

Broad Topic:- Application of FEM, Fundamental Concepts Required to Develop FEM

Model

Lecture Description:-

The example of Boeing-787 Dreamliner Project was discussed in detail to enrich the students
with attractive features of FEM. Fundamentals of mechanics of solids and mathematics
necessary to develop any FEM model were also introduced.
Lecture No.:- 4

Date:-25/07/2017

Time:- 9.00-10.00 am (A)/11.00-12.00 am(B)

Broad Topic:- Fundamental Concepts Required to Develop FEM Model

Lecture Description:-

This complete lecture was devoted to explain the basic concepts such as kinematic relations,
constitutive models, and type of stresses etc.
Lecture No.:- 5

Date:-26/07/2017

Time:- 12.00-1.00 pm (A)/2.35-3.30.00 pm(B)

Broad Topic:- Numerical based on 1-D rod problem.

Lecture Description:-

Two different sort of numerical were taken for better explanation of solid mechanics principles/
fundamentals taught in previous classes. One question of mathematical modeling for rod under
point load was selected and the procedure for calculating the potential energy of system was
explained. One numerical of truss was given to students for solutions.
Lecture No.:- 6

Date:-28/07/2017

Time:- 1.40-2.35.00 pm

Broad Topic:- Varitional Principle, The Minimum Potential Energy Theory, and Relayigh-
Ritz Principle .

Lecture Description:-

Significance of variations in solving the structural mechanics problems was discussed and the
minimum potential energy principle was illustrated for given 1-D problem. Moreover, the
Relayigh-Ritz Principle was also described in order to solve the 1-D structural mechanics
problem. The need of finding the governing equations and their solutions using the above stated
principles were also discussed.
Lecture No.:- 7

Date:-31/07/2017

Time:- 9.00-10.00 am(B)/12.00:1.00 pm(A)

Broad Topic:- Methodology for structural analysis using Relayigh-Ritz Principle .

Lecture Description:-

General external work potential and internal energy statements for 3-D cases were described and
the same statements for plane stress and plane strain assumptions were also detailed. The revised
statements are in turn used to solve for bar problem. Method of converting the volume
integration into surface and line integration with integration by parts methods were also
explained to the students. Significance of variations in solving the structural mechanics
problems was discussed and the minimum potential energy principle was illustrated for given 1-
D problem.
Lecture No.:- 8

Date:-01/08/2017

Time:- 9.00-10.00 am(A)/11.00:12.00 pm(B)

Broad Topic:- Effect of approximation functions on solution, Weighted Residual statement,

Galerkin Method.

Lecture Description:-

The quadratic and cubic polynomial approximation functions were assumed for primary variable
calculation. The bar problem under two type of loading conditions was utilized for explaining the
effect of degree of approximation functions. The weighted residual statement in general sense
was illustrated and its use in FEM was explained. The Galerkin method and its applicability was
also introduced.
Lecture No.:- 9

Date:-02/08/2017

Time:- 12.00-1.00 pm (A)/2.35-3.30.00 pm(B)

Broad Topic:- Revision and Problem solving .

Lecture Description:-

The lecture was fully devoted to revise the taught concepts till date and to satisfy the student
quires. The students were encouraged to ask their specific quires and to revise basic key concepts
of the subject.
Date:-22/08/2017

Time:- 09.00-10.00 am (A)/11.00-12.00. noon (B)
