Local context

• SLECO N.V. is a 50-50 JV between SUEZ and INDAVER, a waste

treatment company based in Flanders.

• It is located in Beveren, in the industrial zone of the Port of Antwerp, on a

site that also hosts other waste treatment facilities.

• An EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contract for the plant

was signed with LURGI LENTJES A.G in 2002
TRANSFORMING WASTE INTO NEW RESOURCES Detailed description of the solution

SLECO
• The technology used, fluidised bed co-incineration, allows waste with a
low calorific value (sludge) and waste with a high calorific value (non-
hazardous industrial waste) to be recovered efficiently in equal
proportions.

• The solid waste arrives in a large bunker through different unloading bays:
• The waste is first pretreated with a view to ensuring optimum
Overview incineration,
• A shredder reduces the waste while an overhead magnet removes
the ferrous elements.

• Conveyor belts carry the pretreated waste to an intermediate bunker. Using

a grab crane, the operator brings the waste to one of the 3 feed chutes.
Client reference Large double screws push the waste into the furnace. The sludge is dumped
into one of the three sludge bunkers.
Client
Key success factors
• After sieving out any possible coarse components, the sludge is pumped
directly into the incinerator in a controlled way.

Needs addressed

• Deliver a technology able to treat a sizeable quantity of waste and sludge

with a low calorific value

• Develop a flue gas treatment which complies with measures imposed by the
EU in its Waste Incineration Directive

• Flemish policy: mandatory introduction of selective collection of household

and industrial waste

SLECO
Which factors contribute to the success of the project ?

• The Beveren site is ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified: guaranty that
operating conditions comply with the requirements

Overview • Joint venture with INDAVER, European leader in the household and
industrial waste management

• Fluidised bed technology is the best available technology for combined

treatment of non-recoverable waste and sludge

Key success factors
Client benefits • Autonomy: the produced energy is partly used in the installations on site and
partly supplied to the grid

• Minimum impact on the environment: the combustion gases are intensively

cleaned in successive installations in order to meet the stringent requirements
for atmospheric emissions
