CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM

1.1 INTRODUCTION

In almost all areas and aspect, development and advancement are

present. Working at home is now possible through telecommuting, where virtual

offices are prevalent. Online facilities for banking are present in every banking

institution where clients can do banking transactions through their phones and

mobile gadgets. A person can attain an educational degree without having to go

to a physical university through online schools. Online shopping is present

through e commerce. With everything becoming so fast, many are trying to do

things more quickly, convenient and with simplicity.

One of the most important resources of the many people now is time, thus

they also want things done in a more efficient, convenient, in a simple manner.

Increasing their productivity with the minimal amount of time is what most people

want, thus, advancements of technology has been widely accepted. Many

applications and system were developed to answer these needs. Hence,

developments and other attempts to provide solutions to every need and want of

the society has been taken advantage by the solutions company, application

builders, and other stakeholders to provide the needs and wants of the people.

With people becoming so busy, one of the challenges encountered by

many is having someone to take care of household chores, minor repair and

maintenance. True enough, hiring people to get these things done are quite
2

challenging, not to mention as well issues like trusting someone to work for

somebody as nanny, repair and maintenance worker, or even house maids could

be quite compromising and costly. In the traditional way of looking for a worker to

do minor chores, people often would asked a referral from someone who could

they recommend to. This process is quite inconvenient as not many people can

recommend someone to work for somebody, especially if someone is new to a

particular area or if someone is living in a highly urbanized city. Attending to

chores are often neglected because of their busy schedule. Some of them opt to

having house helpers but many of these helpers would not stay for a long period

of time because of many issues like trust, family, money, and time. They are also

having difficult time to look for some who can do minor household repair and

maintenance, and they would just always rely on referrals.

Hence, the researchers are proposing to design and develop an

application that allows people to do their specific jobs for them such as cleaning,

laundry, baby sitting and even minor house or office maintenance. The

researchers shall call this application “InstaWorkers”, where the word Insta is a

coño word for “Instant” which means quick. With this application, the users would

find it easy to hire someone to do particular job, and the workers who are

interested in doing the job might take the offer.

This application will not just cater people who are looking for someone to

do their house chores; nevertheless, the application is also open to jobless

people or to everyone that are looking for part time jobs or extra income. People

who are looking for extra income might have difficulties in finding extra jobs
3

unlike in other areas, looking for some part- time work is not much offered in this

region. Although some fast food chains offers part- time jobs, the challenge in

undergoing the hiring process for the applicants is still present.

The proposed system has three (3) users: the worker, employer and the

administrator.

The first user will be the worker, the worker will fill up application form in

the Instaworker with attached resume and the admin will validate the application

form. If the worker is qualified the admin will notify the worker to report in the

PESO (Public Employment Service Office) via SMS, the worker will report to the

office to comply all the requirements. The worker will receive instaID and the

admin will set the profile based on their attached resume and advertise the

worker details. For further understanding see Figure 1.1.

4

Figure 1.1 Proposed Process Flow on Accepting/Declining Application for

Workers

The second user will be the employer. An individual who is looking for a

worker can immediately select someone to the job based on the requirements.

Before the employer can proceed to hiring process, they must be able to register

on the application. On the registration process the employer must link their

registration to their Facebook account and manually verify by the admin the

identity of the said employer. The employer also must their mobile

number/google mail to set the confirmation of their registration to verify the profile

of the employer and to set the security of the workers. After the registration

process, the employer will now be able to proceed on the hiring process. The
5

employer can make a selection from the pool of workers as to verify the

credibility of the worker through their profile. For further understanding see Figure

1.2.

Figure 1.2 Proposed Process Flow on Hiring/Looking for a Worker

This application will give the individual an option in getting the best worker

that will suit their needs and budget. Provided with information of the employees

who seek for a job they are specialized and for doing the simplest to most

complicated jobs, employers will have the opportunity to have what they exactly

needed, in a time-efficient way.

6

The third user will be the administrator, the one who is able to filter the

application of the worker and registration of the employer for the security of both

parties.

Figure 1.3 Proposed Process Flow on Verifying Worker by the Employer

In Figure 1.3, the employer must verify the worker for their own security,

the worker must present their InstaID which is validated by the administrator.

After verifying the InstaID, the employer must use the application to verify the QR

code of the worker if it is truly exist.

7

1.2 Statement of the problem

Looking for an individual who can do minor jobs for most people can be

quite challenging especially if someone lives in a highly urbanized city, where

people are too busy to know each other. As much as they wanted to come home

a nice, clean, and comfortable home, this has become a lesser priority. Hence,

many of us are wanting to get a house helpers, but the issues regarding as

where, or as to who would that be would arise especially if issues like trust, cost,

and other factors are taken into consideration.

Workers in one way or another might have difficulties on getting a job as

to some do not have enough experiences, and others are not qualified. Some

agencies or companies do not consider the flaws of their applicants and some,

are not accepting part timers.

1.3. Objective of the Study

1.3.1 General Objective

The aim of this research is to design a mobile application called “INSTA

WORKER”, that will help individuals to look and hire people or worker to do minor

jobs such as house work, baby sitting, laundry, house repair and maintenance for

them in a fast, and convenient way. The reliability and trust issues of the workers

can be verified through the submission of proof documents such as identification,

clearances and other pertinent documents. Quality and efficiency of a worker can

also be verified through the review facility of the system in which employers are
8

allowed to give feedback and reviews to the workers who worked for them in the

past.

1.3.2 Specific Objectives

The proposed system specifically aims to:

 Define and analyze system requirements in developing InstaWorker

application.

 Design a mobile application system that can:

o a system that can processes a workers application;

o a system that can manage hiring from the employer;

o generate and provides QR code to identify workers;

o allows employers to hire workers at their own convenience;

o provide trust ratings to the instaworker by the employer;

o provide trust rating to the employer;

 Develop and implement the InstaWorker Mobile Application based on

the design requirements;

 Test and implement the InstaWorker Mobile Application.

9

1.4 Significance of the Study

This study would help individually in the community through time

saving in the solution of using the mobile application, as a job hiring mobile

application we don’t want to just provide workers, we want users to look and

search together with the background of the workers and the trust ratings for the

user’s security and satisfaction. This study will also help to the worker promoting

their respective skills, it promotes their manpower here in Cagayan De Oro City

which helps them earn money to make them elevate their way of living.

This study well made to help to the employer, basically it is more

convenient for them to know where to look and hire if they need a skilled workers

to do their minor jobs in their house. And to the researchers it gives us a chance

to apply our knowledge in making the mobile application and publish it and

maybe can earn money from it.

1.5 Scope and Limitations of the Study

Everybody seeks for convenience and time-saving options in everything

we do. With the use of technology, the output of this research aims to provide

convenience to the users who look for workers or job they needed anytime, and

anywhere.
10

The proposed application can only be used within Cagayan de Oro City.

Thus applicants to be accepted are only those living in Cagayan De Oro and jobs

to be posted should also be located within the city as well.

1.6 Definition of Terms

For better understanding of the study, the following terms are operationally

defied:

PESO – Public Employment Service Office is a non-fee charging

multi-employment service facility in the Philippines.

WORKER – A person who applies and do the jobs.

EMPLOYER – A person who seek for an employees.

PROFILE – Feature in the system which allows users to manage their

personal information, skills, and reviews.

TRUST-RATINGS – A measure use to define the workers credibility and

performance.

TRUST-REVIEWS – An employer’s satisfaction review for the workers.

INSTA ID – A workers ID to determine their information.

QR CODE – Is a matrix barcode to identify workers identity.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW AND RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

In this chapter contains the researched review done by the proponents

about the related ideas regarding the proposed system. It includes the

differences and similarities found in mobile application development.

2.1 Foreign Studies

According to Chohan et al. (2017) during last decade, mobile device users

have increased extremely and resulted in rapid growth in allied industrial of

mobile devices. The quick development of this new computing platform has

almost outclassed conventional software engineering processes to personalized

mobile application development. Consequently, the variety and availability of

mobile applications are increasing rapidly. Furthermore, the increased

processing power of portable devices provides an edge to developers of

developing various types of apps to serve a range of services. Many sectors are

successfully using the mobile application and promoting their business, such as

traveling and tourism, motor vehicle registration, and renewal, toll tax, police,

government taxation and revenue collection, urban service providers are widely

using the mobile application to facilitate their customers.

Scott Shane (2016) mentioned that the rise in mobile-phone usage means

that Smartphone applications have become a key tool for various businesses

because mobile apps increase engagement with customers. The mobile

application could be considered as a medium for educating people about housing

11

and its quality standards. Because the mobile application is capable of grasping

the attention of people very fast and it is very easy to use.

As indicated by Wang et al. (2013), the mobile application is a new

emerging mobile technology and has been widely used. This new mobile piece

not only overturns the traditional business model of mobile industry, but also

creates new avenues of mobile market opportunities. Mobile application can

come preloaded on the mobile device as well as can be downloaded by users

from mobile application stores or the Internet. Moreover, mobile application

usually help users by connecting them to Internet services more commonly

accessed on desktop or notebook computer, or help them by making it easier to

use the Internet on their portable devices.

In addition, Harrison et al. (2013) said that the usefulness of mobile

devices has increased greatly in recent years allowing users to perform more

tasks in a mobile context. This increase in usefulness has come at the expense

of the usability of these devices in some contexts.

Dr. Panth et al. (2013) stated that, automation of the surrounding

environment of a modern human being allows increasing his work efficiency and

comfort. There has been a significant development in the area of an individual’s

routine tasks and those can be automated. In the present times, we can find

most of the people clinging to their mobile phones and smart devices throughout

the day. Hence with the help of a mobile phone, some daily household tasks can

be accomplished by personifying the use of the mobile phone.

12

2.2 Local Studies

The analysis also shows that people are devoting ever more time in

mobile applications. Time spent in apps and the web, combined, has grown as

users lead a more connected life. This progress though has been driven entirely

by applications. The growth in time spent in mobile applications is slowing – from

above 23% between December 2010 and June 2011 to a little over 15% from

June 2011 to December 2011. The growth is predominately being compelled by

an increase in the number of sessions, as opposed to longer session lengths.

Consumers are using their apps more frequently (FastTrack 2018).

With such colossal numbers of applications being created nowadays, you

can have incalculable arrangements readily available which suits your way of life.

In Cagayan de Oro City, a gathering of youthful and dynamic people built up a

portable application called STREETBY which positively fits the requirements of

an advanced visitor. It is the primary ever travel and local lifestyle application in

the city (Agila Innovations, Inc. 2016).

Bernie et al. (2016) identified that the Philippines is battered by different

natural and man-made disasters. It cannot be disputed that despite its

magnificent and natural beauty, the country suffers from these devastations.

Although the government has set in mitigation and prevention plans, little is put

into consideration when the disaster happens. The application focuses on the

Information Communications Technology (ICT) in a form of an android based

mobile application that gives victims the capability to seek help when a disaster
13

or incident strikes. In addition, people can notify others of the danger ahead

through AppLERT and Facebook so that they can avoid the area where the

danger is through crowdsourcing.

Antivola et. al. (2015) mentioned, there’s a lot of people are inclining to

internet surfing and job searching via online has been one of the formal methods

of seeking information on job openings of different companies. Most of the job

searching websites posts job openings only with the corresponding address of

the company, which give job seekers the problem of locating where a company is

located especially when a job seeker is unfamiliar in a particular setting. Online

Job Locator is a system that provide a mechanism for a job seekers to locate job

openings via online, the Online Job Locator will provide a principal function to

assist job seekers and help them locate to locate a specific job opening and the

corresponding location of the company.

In addition, Xinhua (2014) said that Filipinos are using their mobile phones

not only to communicate but also as mobile computers as well, according to a

recent market study issued a global customized research company, said in its

report that Filipino consumers are not just using cell phones to call and texting

messages and photos, but also as a means to internet on the go, allowing users

to be always online. Of the 38,000 respondents in metro manila, 75 percent of

the respondents surveyed used mobile phones to take photos or' videos; 45

percent to browse the internet; 44 percent to access their social networking sites

and 37 percent to check their emails.

Chapter 3

Research Design Methodology

The development of the InstaWorker will focus on the user that are looking

for a work or want to hire a worker, a mobile application and since our study are

in limited area only which is in Cagayan de Oro City. The proponents used

Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) method to meet the user requirement.

The SDLC is consist of the following phases namely: Requirement Analysis,

Design Phase, Develop Phase, Testing Phase, and Implementation which is

shown in Figure 3.1

Figure 3.1 Waterfall Model of SDLC

3.1 Requirement Analysis

The proponents gathered data from the respective Public Employment

Service Office (PESO) for the development of InstaWorker Mobile Application by

conducting interview and survey questionnaires to have better support to the

mobile application (see Appendix B). After gathered the data the proponents

identifies that the workers and the employers has the big factor in our mobile

application, to have better understandings, the administrator will checked the

workers background to sustain the satisfaction for the employers and to checked

the workers application if they will qualified, the employer will search for the

worker for the job that they want and hire, and the workers will wait for the

employers to hire them.

3.2 Design Phase

After gathering all the needed information, the proponents will

present a conceptual design of InstaWorker application. In this phase, the

proponents conceptualized the features and functions needed for the application.

A Context Diagram was provided to help the proponents have a clear

understanding on the data in and out the system, the features and functions of

the system. A contextual diagram shows the overview of the system as shown in

Figure 3.2. The proponents will also make use of the following; Data Flow

Diagram (DFD) is use to graphically represent the flow of data, Entity

Relationship Diagram (ERD) for the relationships of entity sets that was stored in

the database, Use Case Diagram (UCD) will be use to display the relationship
among user and the system, and Activity Diagram will be presenting a series of

actions or flow of control in a system.

Figure 3.2 Context Level Diagram

Figure 3.2 shows the Context Level Diagram which defines the boundary

of the system and its environment, showing the entities that interact through the

application. The proponents introduced the following entities which are the

Worker, Employer, and the Administrator. The Administrator will cater the

accepting/declining and advertise the workers application. For the security of the

workers, the administrator will verify the registration of employer. Through

facebook linked registration of the employer, the administrator will manually

check the profile/timeline of the employer to verify the account is valid. The
Worker and Employer will have the main interaction through the APP

(InstaWorker). Which the employer will see the list of workers according to their

choice. When the Employer has already chosen a worker, they can contact or

leave notification through the APP (InstaWorker), and the Worker will be notified

that someone is interested with their service. After the transaction, the Employer

can leave feedback for the workers profile.

3.3 Development Phase

Figure 3.3 shows the mobile architecture. The Development of

InstaWorker Application System will be based on the architectural design. The

propose system can be access through the web based network infrastructure of

entire Cagayan de Oro City. The proponents will be using different kinds of

programming languages based on the mobile application architecture and define

it as layers. The first layer is the Client Domain; in this layer the researchers will

use Java and Extensible Markup Language (XML) that is supported by android

studio in designing the user-interface of the proposed system together with its

functionalities in which the client can understand. The second layer is the Web

Server; the proponents will use Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for the design and Hypertext Pre-processor

(PHP) in order to provide functionalities by performing detailed processes. The

third layer is the Database Server; the researchers will use MySQL for the

manipulating of data. After the system implementation, the system will be then

deployed by the means of application entire City.

Figure 3.3 Mobile Application Architecture

3.4 Testing Phase

On testing phase, the proponents would like to conduct a test and review

regarding the proposal application. The application will be tested on a mobile

phone. Specifically the system will be tested on android phone to determine what

are the errors of the application that needs to be fix. The proponents will select

an individual that will be able to use the InstaWorker app and a PESO

representative to operate with the administrator part of the system, the

proponents will guide the selected individuals about how the application will be

used in appropriate way and instruct the different functionalities. The selected

individuals will be ask to operate the application with the intent of verifying

application design and identify bugs. The proponents will consider comments and

suggestions of the selected individual for further improvement of the application.

3.5 Implementation Phase

After the testing phase, all the fixes and improvement have been made.

The software will be implemented on the mobile application platform for each

user.
