Example 11.4.2 Tangential Flow in an Annulus with Viscous Heat Generation

(Ref. Bird, R.B., Stewart, W.E., and Lightfoot, E. N. ‘Transport Phenomena’, John Wiley & Sons, 2002, 2nd edition, Delhi)

Governing Equation

Boundary Conditions

, T = Tk

, T = T1

Draw meaningful conclusions by considering different k and Ω0 values. Also compare your results
with analytical solutions.
Group 2: HEAT CONDUCTION WITH A CHEMICAL HEAT SOURCE

Ref. (Section 10.5 of Bird, R.B., Stewart, W.E., and Lightfoot, E. N. ‘Transport Phenomena’, John Wiley & Sons, 2002, 2nd
edition, Delhi)

The above mentioned problem is solved analytically in a book by neglecting the heat conduction
term.
Compare the results of solution by incorporating the heat conduction term with the analytical
solution provided in the book.
Group 3 Free Convection
Ref. (Section 10.9 of Bird, R.B., Stewart, W.E., and Lightfoot, E. N. ‘Transport Phenomena’, John Wiley & Sons, 2002, 2nd
edition, Delhi)

In the book, linear temperature profile is assumed.

Develop the temperature and velocity profile without above assumption.

Develop the governing equations using following generalized equations and solve them with
appropriate boundary conditions.
Group 4: FLOW IN A SLIT WITH UNIFORM CROSS FLOW

The governing equation is given by

dvx dP d 2v
ρv y =− + µ 2x
dy dx dy

Boundary Conditions

At y = 0 and y = B vx =0

Draw meaningful results by assuming constant pressure drop in x direction and appropriate values
for other variables and by varying the y direction velocity. Check your answers with analytical
solution.
Group 5 Flow of a film on the outside of a circular tube

Develop the governing equations using following generalized equations and solve them with
appropriate boundary conditions.
Group 6 Viscous heat generation in a polymer melt

Develop the appropriate governing equations using the appendix B and solve those using
appropriate boundary conditions and draw meaningful conclusions.

Group 7 Free convection with temperature dependent viscosity

Solve following problem numerically.
