*“Teachers from university teaching programs” as used here refers to teachers who were recommended for licensure by a university in Utah. Most of these will be teaching majors, but this also includes teachers who
received a master’s degree in teaching before becoming a teacher or those who majored in something other than teaching but completed requisite coursework to be recommended for teacher licensure by the university.
The actual number of new teachers per year from our university teaching
programs has decreased 34 percent since 2007, even while the total
number of new teachers per year has grown.

The teachers we attract into the profession now will shape the future of our
40,000 schools. If we want to provide long-term, qualified teachers for Utah students,
we need to find ways to attract more people into university teaching programs.
