Dear Friends,
As I come on board as Chairman of the Seamen’s Church Institute, I am reminded of what a unique organization
it is, and how many special people are connected with it. Taking over as SCI Chairman after Mr. Richard du
Moulin is no small task. He has served SCI faithfully, energetically, and successfully.
In this role for the last six years, his legacy is that SCI is in a stronger position than ever to fulfill its mission of
chaplaincy, advocacy, and education.
As we turn toward the future, we are committed to serving the men and women of the maritime industry in
their day to day lives, and in the extraordinary situations they sometimes face. Through interactions with shipping
and towing companies, as well as the mariners themselves, SCI has been able to develop in-depth initiatives,
most recently relating to their mental health and well-being. Having served on the SCI board for nearly 20 years,
I take pride in leading this organization as it rises to meet new challenges.
I look forward to representing SCI and being a part of its historic journey.

In 2017, we asked you to “share your connection” to the
Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI). Our day-to-day work is vital for
seafarers and mariners alike, but we can’t do any of it without
you—our supporters, donors, partners, and friends. SCI assists
mariners on the front-line, and we cannot stand alone.
This Annual Report celebrates the many people who team
up with us in different ways. Your connections with us range
from giving financial support to attending events, to knitting,
to advocating on behalf of mariners, and even remembering
mariners in prayer. Each is important and meaningful to us,
and yet more so to the seafarers who benefit from your
generous spirit. By sharing your connection with SCI, you are
strengthening your connection with the maritime world.
In 2017, SCI spearheaded a variety of mariner wellness
initiatives. Initially convening a mariner health roundtable with
a focus on inland river personnel, we embarked on suicide
prevention and intervention initiatives. Through this work,
SCI demonstrates our deep commitment to mariner wellbeing:
physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional.

The 2017 SCI Mountain Challenge once again welcomed
competitors to the mountains of Maine, testing physical limits
and demanding teamwork and dedication in the spirit of the
men and women of the maritime. It was a huge success, and
many new bonds were formed with individuals and companies
who were first—although assuredly not last—timers to
the event.
Finally, big changes occurred in the landscape for Port Newark.
The Bayonne Bridge was raised to accommodate the new breed
of larger container ships, the first of which sailed under it on
June 26, 2017 (pictured below). Despite the huge size of these
vessels, the crews who sail them remain the same: fellow men
and women doing a vital job and coping with everything that life
at sea entails. SCI has always been there for them, and we will
remain so in the future.
Thank you for partnering with us, sharing your connection
with SCI and, through us, standing by the men and women of
the maritime.

SCI HOSTS MARINER HEALTH ROUNDTABLE
On May 9, 2017, the Seamen’s Church Institute
hosted a roundtable on “Human Factors in Mariner
Health and Safety” at the Center for Maritime
Education in Paducah, KY. The event was attended
by individuals from nine different companies
representing brown water, blue water, and the
Great Lakes, as well as some interested independent
parties. Two experts in Occupational Medicine
from Yale Medical School attended, plus a group of
SCI staff.
The day was split into two parts, the first dealing
with the issue of suicide prevention in the inland
river community. On this subject, the group heard
from SCI Chaplain Kempton Baldridge, who shared
his experience in dealing with the aftermath of
mariner suicide. A group discussion of the issue
ensued, covering topics such as setting cultural
and company norms so that employees feel able
to openly discuss thoughts of suicide they may
have. Risk factors for suicide that pertain especially
to the inland river community were covered: the
difficulties of “transitioning” between boat and
home life; stress caused by hearing about problems
at home without being able to do anything about
them; typical issues of loss, or “losing out” on home
life such as missing birthdays, milestones, or other
important life events because of being on board
the vessel; access to lethal methods in the form
of hunting equipment; under-disclosure among
men of emotional problems, physical ailments or
medications; and reluctance to talk about the issues
relating to mental health in wider society.
Dr. Rafael Lefkowitz of Yale reminded the group
that changes in culture come from the very top
of an organization; the encouragement to disclose
problems without fear of reprisal is a message that
has to trickle down through the hierarchy, and it
takes time for this to happen.
SCI President and Executive Director, David Rider,
stated that professionally-delivered Cognitive
Behavioral Therapy is an excellent tool for coping
with stressors. SCI then introduced two of their
recently-developed resources relating to the issue.
The first, an e-learning module on suicide
awareness and prevention, can be taken
anywhere, at any time by those who are part
of SCI’s e-learning network. SCI developed the
module with the collaboration of the Education
Development Center (EDC), as well as the
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
(AFSP), a national charity and think-tank dedicated
to the issue.
This module is ideal for providing a brief overview
of the problem, offering advice and resources
when dealing with employees who are considering
suicide. SCI’s unique position as a trusted third
party within the maritime community means
that they are able to take resources relating to
the wider population and customize them to the
inland mariner community.

THE 2017 SCI MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE:
A TEST OF ENDURANCE, INSPIRED BY MARINERS
September 2017 saw 150 participants representing
44 companies from the maritime industry
compete against each other in the mountains of
western Maine to raise funds for the Seamen’s
Church Institute (SCI). The third biennial SCI
Mountain Challenge provided participants with the
opportunity to push their physical limits in support
of mariners who face extreme conditions every
day to keep our modern way of life afloat. Course
times, plus philanthropy dollars raised, contributed
to each team’s overall final ranking and awards.
But why a mountain race? SCI believes it’s symbolic.
Each working day, mariners push themselves in a
race against time and nature to deliver the world’s
commerce. Taking place on land and water, the SCI
Mountain Challenge acknowledges many of the
hardships mariners confront on a daily basis: the
elements (facing northern New England’s notoriously
unpredictable weather), isolation (teams work self-
sufficiently on the mountain and water race courses)
and physically demanding work (participants ascend
over 3,000 feet each day).
Cargill was the Lead Event Sponsor for the 2017 SCI
Mountain Challenge, as well as the Peak Challenge
Sponsor (award for the fastest team to hike between
two peaks). Other sponsors included TOTE, who
sponsored the Geo-Cache Challenge; McAllister
Towing, who sponsored the Cairn-Building Challenge;
Liberian Registry, who sponsored the Event Bags;
Teekay Shipping, who sponsored the Fueling Station;
and Scorpio Bulkers and Scorpio Tankers, who
sponsored the Finish Line Celebration.
Jennifer Koenig, SCI’s Director of Development,
said, “We are grateful for the overwhelming support

for this event. The competitors gave 100% on
the mountain course as well as the Philanthropy
Challenge. Their tenacity is inspiring and has a major
impact on SCI’s fundraising.”
Congratulations go to team Baere Force 1 from
Core Petroleum and Baere Maritime, 2017’s overall
winners, whose combined Varsity course time
plus fundraising total put them in first place. For
Junior Varsity, overall first place went to The Schulte
Summiteers from Bernhard Schulte. Fastest course
completion for Varsity went to Challenge newcomers
Green Peak Partners. On the Junior Varsity course,
team Screaming Eagles from American Bureau of
Shipping came in fastest.

was a first-time competitor in the SCI Mountain Challenge in September

When I first heard about the SCI Mountain Challenge, I thought it looked like a lot of fun and would provide
motivation for me to push myself and commit to getting into shape! When I realized the Philanthropy Challenge
was part of the event, I thought it was great that I could raise money for a good cause at the same time. I think I
was so successful in the philanthropy challenge because after 25 years in the industry my colleagues and business
associates have turned into friends. SCI has a great reputation as a sincere charity that does excellent work,
so when I approached my friends, they supported me generously because they were also giving to SCI. Not
only did I help SCI but I was rewarded in so many other ways. Crossing the finish line gave me a great sense of
accomplishment, kept me working out, and turned two longtime colleagues into real buddies.
I believe SCI is a worthwhile cause, and I see their vans picking up seafarers all the time in Port Newark. I attended
a military academy and also have a background in trucking, so I recognize that being a seafarer is a lonely profession
and a tough one. SCI is the friendly face that meets seafarers, remembers them and helps them in so many way—
especially connecting with home.
If this inspires you to take on the Challenge, the next one is scheduled for September 26–29, 2019!

CENTER FOR SEAFARERS’ RIGHTS INTERN REPORT

I am a student at Tulane University School of Law,
going into the second year of my law degree. In
summer 2017, I had the privilege of serving as the
Summer Legal Intern for the Seamen’s Church
Institute’s (SCI) Center for Seafarers’ Rights
(CSR), under the guidance of Director, Douglas B.
Stevenson, Esq. Through my work at SCI, I became
immersed in the maritime community, making
connections at industry events and outings, and
interacting with the seafarers who are the backbone
of international shipping, and therefore global and
national economies.
At first glance, a visitor passing by Port Newark, NJ
might be taken aback by the stacks of containers,
the abundance of trucks on the roads, and the
giant industrial machines throughout the port area.
Yet, working in the port has given me a greater
appreciation for the people behind this industry.

law firms become involved in the maritime world.
However, the most important part of my summer
was the day-to-day work with Director Doug
Stevenson. Each day brought fresh news of the
challenges faced by seafarers, especially regarding
wage issues, repatriation, maintenance and cure
complaints (relating to a seafarer’s right to medical
and living expenses from his employer for any
injury arising during the course of his employment.)
Director Stevenson fostered my passion for advocacy,
encouraging me to research legislation connected
to maritime law and seafarers’ rights, delve into
case law relating to seafarers’ legal complaints, and
better communicate with international seafarers. This
experience has shown me what I am truly driven by:
service to my client and passion for advocacy. I will
continue to cultivate these passions upon my return
to Tulane.

This summer, my main project was to compile and

analyze the SCI’s annual Shore Leave Report for
2017. I also received and drafted responses to legal
complaints by seafarers. Furthermore, I researched
and composed a legal guide for chaplains on how
to handle complaints of harassment and bullying
from seafarers.
Some other highlights included assisting with SCI’s
2017 Silver Bell Awards Dinner and Maritime Forum,
attending the Marine Money ship finance conference,
visiting the Liberian Registry, spending two days
with the United States Coast Guard, and visiting
ships in Port Newark. Through all these events and
experiences, I met many people from several fields
within the maritime industry, learning about topics
such as: how P&I clubs and health professionals
interact to protect seafarers; efforts to defend against
cyber attacks in the shipping industry; the important
role the USCG plays in protecting the environment

Christian Mollitor is the Managing Director of Decatur Marine Audit & Survey. He first got
to know SCI through his previous position with the Liberian Registry. Christian is an alumnus of the U.S.
Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, and spent three years at sea before establishing his career on
land. He recently included SCI in his estate plans.
Why do you think giving to SCI matters?
SCI does a lot of excellent work for seafarers. Having previously been a mariner myself I know it’s
particularly important for organizations like SCI to provide support for them, especially when they’re
far away from home and haven’t seen their families in a long time. Also, if they’re part of a religious
community, they often haven’t had a chance to connect with that group, so those spiritual services are
essential too. SCI’s role in this regard, its legal advocacy, and the maritime training it provides for the
inland marine industry adds up to a lot of very valuable and significant work.
What prompted you to include SCI in your estate plans?
I have built a relationship with SCI over the last 5 years by going to events like the Silver Bell Awards
Dinner and Mountain Challenge. Now, with Decatur Marine, I’m learning about what SCI is doing in
Paducah and last year I attended the River Bell Awards for the first time. I’ve been able to see SCI in
action throughout my involvement with them, which is one of the main reasons why I extended my
giving from corporate and personal gifts to also being a legacy donor and including SCI in my estate
plans. Recently, I was writing my trust and a portion of that is set aside for non-profits and charities,
so of course SCI was at the top of the list!

SCI HOLDS FIRST APPLIED SUICIDE
INTERVENTION SKILLS TRAINING WORKSHOP
On July 13–14, 2017, the Seamen’s Church Institute
(SCI) ran a two-day Applied Suicide Intervention
Skills Training (ASIST) workshop for shore-side
personnel in the inland river industry. The workshop
took place in SCI’s Center for Maritime Education,
Paducah, KY, and was very well-received by all
who attended.
The ASIST course teaches the necessary attitudes,
knowledge, and skills to recognize persons at risk,
and to undertake appropriate management or
referral of a person who is having thoughts of suicide.
This course provides a natural extension of the
mariner health roundtable hosted by SCI in May for
companies representing the inland river industry.
Suicide remains a concern among towing
operators because of many recent fatal cases and
the challenging work/life rhythms of extended
deployment to highly structured boat life, followed
by extended return home to less structured family
life. Mariners may view themselves as ruggedly self-
sufficient and defer seeking professional medical and
mental health support when they need it.
Some 5% of Americans have thoughts of suicide
each year, and suicide behaviors are far more
common than most people think. Almost
everyone will come into contact with suicide
behaviors in some significant way during their life.
“Many people have been trained to administer
physical first aid such as CPR,” noted the Rev.
David M. Rider (President and Executive Director
of SCI), “but very few know about emergency first
aid for preventing suicide.”
The workshop, developed by a company called
LivingWorks Education, was presented by
the Rev. David Rider and Dr. Naomi Walker
(Director of Communications for SCI), both
accredited ASIST trainers. It dealt directly with
attitudes about suicide prevention and also
taught participants to recognize people who
might be at risk. According to Naomi Walker,
major risk indicators include sudden changes in
behavior or personality, feelings of hopelessness
or depression, previous suicide attempts, and
most importantly, statements expressing a
desire or intention to die. One of the most
important skills to have, she emphasized, is the
ability to ask directly about suicide, thereby
opening honest discussion of the topic.

One participant said of the course, “This exceeded

my expectations. While I’ve been professionally
trained before, here I learned new skills and
processes that were simpler and more useful.”
Another commented, “This was an excellent
workshop—I feel I’m leaving with a whole new set of
skills that will benefit all facets of my life.”

For many years, our Senior Warden was someone
who had served in the merchant marine, giving us an insight into the need for the services SCI provides.
Saint-Esprit makes annual donations to several charitable organizations covering several different areas
of mission, both domestic and international. Our church comprises many members who live far away
from their home country, and many who are the descendants of refugees. SCI’s mission appeals to
us because it reaches out to those who are isolated through spending many months away from their
family while at sea. This year, we were particularly touched by the initiative for suicide prevention and
the educational program that SCI launched in this area. We hope to continue this fruitful engagement
with the mission of SCI and look forward to paying a visit to the International Seafarers’ Center in
Port Newark!

“Society has seen an increase in suicide over recent years among young people, military veterans, and
other groups. Our tow-boaters are not immune to this trend. Like any treatable illness, I believe it is
critical to focus on what we can do as individuals and organizations to help address this growing concern:
we can make a difference.
SCI’s ASIST training was excellent. The two-day course provides tremendous insight into how we can
respond to signs that someone is struggling. I now feel very confident in my ability to help someone who
needs support but is afraid or unwilling to ask for it. We learned about the importance of working through
immediate issues to achieve ‘safety for now,’ and supporting the person at risk as they seek professional help.
The training is like CPR for mental well-being, and is hugely important as we address the issue of suicide.”

PORT NEWARK BECOMES BIG SHIP READY
In the 1930s, the New York harbor bustled with
traffic, and residents living in the region were starting
to move outward from the city. The Bayonne
Bridge was built as a link between Staten Island and
Bayonne, replacing a ferry service between the two
states. The bridge was built with 151 ft. air clearance,
which for the next 80 years left plenty of room
to accommodate ships sailing into the still-growing
Newark Bay.
Today, Port Newark and Port Elizabeth form a
critical transportation hub, and rank third in North
America in terms of import/export activity. The
maritime industry brings us 90% of everything
we consume—electronic devices, cars, paper, grain,
salt, orange juice, and Belgian blocks to name just
a few. Cargo vessels arriving into Port Newark
currently range in size from being able to carry
5,000 TEUs (Twenty Foot Equivalent Units—the
average container) to 8,000 TEUs. Now, with
the expanded Panama Canal, so-called “New
Panamax” ships carrying up to 14,500 TEUs, and
ULCVs (Ultra Large Container Vessels) carrying
in excess of 14,500 TEUs have begun transiting
the world’s oceans.
The Bayonne Bridge, spanning from Staten Island,
NY to Bayonne, NJ, previously inhibited the entry
of these larger ships to Port Newark/Port Elizabeth.
This had a significant impact on the Port’s economic
potential. Therefore, it was decided to raise the
roadbed of the Bayonne Bridge to ensure that the
Port of New York and New Jersey was “Big Ship
Ready.” The $1.6 billion plan was completed in

February 2017, with the new bridge now having an
air draft of 215 ft.
The first Neo-Panamax ship ever to sail under the
newly-raised Bayonne Bridge arrived at Port Newark-
Elizabeth Marine Terminal on June 26, 2017. The
bridge was raised specifically to accommodate these
new giant vessels, and the Zim Antwerp was the first
to arrive (see photo on page 7).
On September 7, 2017, the largest vessel ever
to visit the East Coast arrived under the newly-
raised Bayonne Bridge, the brand new 14,400 TEU
container ship CMA CGM Theodore Roosevelt. A
team from SCI visited the ship soon after it berthed,
enjoying a tour and talking with the crew. As the age
of the “New Panamax” arrives, SCI looks towards
the future while drawing on a history of long-term
commitment to seafarers’ wellbeing.

SCI TRUSTEE
Jack Noonan, President of Binnacle Maritime LLC, is a graduate of the
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point. He has been involved with SCI
for a number of years, and joined the Board of Trustees in 2017.
My first experience with the Seamen’s Church Institute was in
August 1980 when I stayed at the SCI NYC residence while taking my
USCG 2nd Mate’s license exam. I returned in 1983 to stay there during
my Chief Mate’s license exam. Over the past ten years, as CEO of
Chembulk Tankers, I sponsored tables at the annual Silver Bell Awards
Dinner, which I viewed as an excellent client appreciation event. However,
I have since come to realize that SCI meant more to me than those
experiences. SCI’s mission of concern for the welfare of the seafarer, via
its maritime education and training programs and its chaplaincy, brought
me back to my own roots as a seafarer. More importantly, my support for
SCI is driven by my belief that giving back is not only an obligation but it
is also a privilege. I say privilege because the term “giving back” connotes
that one received something in the first place and is in a position to give
back. I am proud to be an SCI Trustee and feel honored to support its mission.

CENTER FOR SEAFARERS’ RIGHTS: CASE STUDY

Just before Christmas 2017, the Rev. Judith Altree,
port chaplain in the Ontario ports of Toronto,
Hamilton, and Oshawa asked my help in repatriating a
Filipino seafarer whose ship was tentatively scheduled
to arrive in Toronto between December 21–23. The
seafarer had completed his contract plus one month’s
extension in November, and he wanted to go home
to be with his family, so he asked the ship’s master
to be repatriated when the ship arrived in Toronto.
He was informed that no relief was available, and
he would not be repatriated until the ship returned
to Europe.
After discussing the case with Chaplain Judith,
we decided that the Center for Seafarers’ Rights
(CSR) would contact the seafarer and obtain his
authorization to intervene with the shipowner on his
behalf, which we did. The result of our interventions

was that the seafarer was repatriated from the vessel
at its first port call in Canada on December 27.
Unfortunately, this case is not unusual. A small
number of ship operators attempt to economize
on crew replacement and repatriation expenses by
extending seafarers’ contract beyond their expiration
dates against the seafarers’ wishes. CSR supports
seafarers by helping them enforce their legal rights
contained in their employment contracts.
