Dear Parent or Guardian of John Smith,

I am reaching out to you in regards to some issues I am experiencing with your child and
I would appreciate your cooperation to resolve it as soon as possible. I fully believe in
the power of collaboration between parent and teacher in eliminating problems within
the learning environment.
John is typically a very active participant in the classroom. He is a very bright child and is
often engaged in the lessons and activities. Each class begins with bell work (typically a
short writing reflection on a prompt), which is then turned in for review. John is one of a
handful of students that completes this assignment daily, and offers very insightful
points of view.
The issue I am experiencing with John is that he has many missing homework
assignments. John has accumulated a total of 8 missing assignments, including one
embedded assessment. All of which is impacting John’s grade negatively.
I have addressed this issue with your child and John agreed to come in during lunch to
work on those homework assignments with me, until all seven have been completed.
John is also aware that he is more than welcome to work on them at home, but because
he will have other homework assigned in the class, I have advised against it. Included
with this letter is a list of the missing assignments, detailing the expectations and
standards for each, as well as a calendar for all upcoming homework assignments this
month. I would ask that you check that the regular course assignment for the night has
been completed, to ensure that John is keeping up with his at-home studies.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the issue or proposed resolution, please
contact me as soon as possible. You will find my contact information listed at the top of
this correspondence. You can also expect to receive another notice from me (likely via
phone) to update you on the results of the completed assignments, as well as John’s
grade and progress in the class. If this is acceptable—or unacceptable—please let me
know as soon as possible.
Sincerely,

Alexis Baumgartner
