a DC 20 Fortitude save or be immediately slain. Additionally, while the
Book of the Damned is outside of its repository (see below), any evil
being of demigod-level power (daemonic harbingers, demon lords, infernal
dukes) or greater using scry or a similar spell can view the Book of the
Damned with no risk of being detected by the bearer. Finally, any
creatures that make use of any of the tome's abilities are damned,
condemned to one of the Lower Planes after death regardless of their
deeds. Only the intervention of a deity can prevent this punishment.
The complete compilation of the Book of the Damned can be used in multiple
ways—as a profane talisman, as an obscene reference volume, and as a gate
to the multiverse's most complete repository of unholy lore.
Talisman: As long as the book is carried, its owner casts all spells with
the evil descriptor as if she were two caster levels higher and gains a +5
bonus on all Charisma-based skills and checks made when interacting with
evil outsiders. The bearer can also make use of the following spell-like
abilities:
At will—align weapon (evil only), bestow curse, detect evil, speak with
dead
3/day—banishment, blasphemy, dictum, magic circle vs. …, unhallow, unholy
aura, unholy blight, word of chaos
1/day—dimensional lock, gate, greater planar binding, soul bind
Reference: Any character who can read Abyssal, Celestial, and Infernal and
who spends a total of 30 days (not necessarily contiguously) studying the
tome learns soul-tainting secrets—the ultimate blasphemies of all
creation. The bearer gains a +10 bonus on Knowledge (planes) checks
whenever she consults the book for 1 hour regarding a question.
Additionally, the book's descriptions of Abaddon, the Abyss, and Hell
prove so vivid that any teleportation to or within those planes always
brings the caster to the desired location (no familiarity roll needed).
The bearer of the Book of the Damned also gains a +5 bonus on the opposed
Charisma check required by the planar binding spell (this bonus stacks
with the +5 bonus the tome grants on interactions with evil outsiders).
Once per day, the bearer can ask the tome a question relating to any
profane topic; she then opens the book to a random page to find the
answer, revealed as if the bearer had cast vision.
The book also contains a copy of every spell with the evil spell
descriptor.
Repository: Once per day, the bearer of the Book of the Damned can cause
the tome to disappear into its own internal demiplane, leaving behind a
sinister shimmering portal. This reproduces the effects of a mage's
magnificent mansion spell, allowing the bearer and those she chooses to

enter an unnerving but semi-safe library filled with the countless volumes
of blasphemous records the Book of the Damned merely serves as a window
upon. The book and those within the repository are affected by a powerful
nondetection effect, shielding all within from the sight of even the gods.
Creatures do not age while inside, although upon leaving, they immediately
age an amount equal to the time spent inside. While within the demiplane,
visitors may access any of the powers described in the Reference section.
DESTRUCTION
The Book of the Damned must be divided into its varied chapters and each
must be destroyed separately within the span of 1 day. The chapter on the
daemonic requires the pages be scrubbed of ink by the tears of a good
outsider, the pages of the demonic chapter must be fed to a good or lawful
outsider, and the diabolic chapter must serve as kindling for a pyre that
burns a good or chaotic outsider alive. If all of the chapters are not
destroyed at the end of 1 day, any destroyed chapters reappear undamaged
in an obscure corner of the multiverse.
HISTORY
In the earliest days of the multiverse, the angelic hosts of Heaven sought
to have an accounting of the totality of knowledge of all realms, so they
might know the glories of the divine, the plights of those they would
protect, and the faces of their enemies. The warrior-scholar was tasked
with this seemingly impossible undertaking, and 1,000 legions of lesser
celestials were placed at his command. Although untold centuries of
tireless toil passed in the chronicling of the Material Plane and the
planes of law, good, and neutrality, those realms willingly yielded their
secrets to the angelic hosts. But the Lower Planes proved even more
hostile and secretive than expected.
RAMIFICATIONS
None can read the secrets of the foulest tome in creation without being
forever changed.
5
Damnation: Those who read from this tome are unequivocally damned.
When the reader is slain, her soul is condemned to Abaddon, the Abyss, or
Hell, as appropriate. Such is the ancient accord that prevents the taint
of the blasphemous tome's secrets from being carried into the goodly
realms in the afterlife. Only the direct intervention of a deity can save
a soul that has read from the Book of the Damned, and such powers are
loath to break their eternal pledges.
Fiendish Machinations: Few fiends or the godly beings who rule over
their kind would balk at laying waste to whole mortal realms in order to
possess secrets with the potential to grant them power over their enemies
and brethren. If taken from its repository, the Book of the Damned is a
beacon to powerful fiends of all types.
Sacred Apocrypha: When the angelic hosts reviewed the works, they
expected to be confronted by all the profanities of fiends and their
unholy lords. What they didn't expect was their brother's unflinching
thoroughness when it came to the most regretful deeds of the celestial
races and deities of light. The angelic scholar's works chronicled
innumerable strained compromises between celestials and fiends, instances
of unholy deception, successions and sacrifices made for greater goods,
occurrences of angelic corruption, massacres on divine battlefields,
alliances between opposed deities, and catalogs of slain empyreal lords—in
short, a collection depraved enough to undermine nearly any mortal faith.
These records, not the bold confessions of fiends, were what led the
folios known as the Book of the Damned to be scattered, as only when these
foul pages are united is the so-called apocrypha to the book's sister
volume, the Chronicle of the Righteous, revealed. {Pathfinder]
6
The Chronicle of the Righteous is written in Celestial. It details the
geography of the good-aligned planes, the gods, empyreal lords, and
celestial creatures who live there, and the unadulterated truths of these
beings and their acts—truths that are sometimes heartening and at other
times unsettling. Any evil-aligned creature who touches the Chronicle of
the Righteous gains 1 negative level. This level cannot be restored until
the character has remained more than 10 feet away from the book for 24
hours. Non-good creatures attempting to read the book must succeed at a DC
15 Will save or have their alignment permanently take one step toward
good.

The Codex Anathema: This infamous book was written by the wizard Iphegor of
the Ebon Mirror. It has been copied on rare occasions since. It records
terrible knowledge of distant times, alien worlds, and various
aberrations. If anyone reads the book (a minimum of 48 hours over at least
six days), he gains an inherent bonus of +2 to his Intelligence score, but
loses 2 points from his Wisdom score. In addition, he gains 5 ranks of
Knowledge (dungeoneering), 2 ranks of Knowledge (arcana), and 2 ranks of
Knowledge (the planes). Once the book is read, the magic disappears from
its pages and it becomes a normal book—still filled with disturbing and
frightful images, but no longer capable of granting its readers any
bonuses or penalties. It is a Tome (book) not a true codex.

"The dark form hung in the sky above our beloved city like a huge
shapeless maw, sucking the life from our world. For five helpless days.
The beautiful blue sky was faded now. But not the brooding darkness of
storm clouds. Death comes in the chill twilight of a clear evening and a
starry sky more beautiful then [sic] any before. Curse this war. Our
enemies are vanquished, but there is no celebration. We are undone. We are
to blame. There will be no one to remember."
– A long forgotten chronicler of the death of Kule.
We of the Cult all know about the legends of the Codex of Infinite Planes,
and how crucial that we have it in our hands to free the Dark One and give
it to him to be used as a vessel for Nothingness.
The following are excerpts from Maldin's Book of Artifacts, describing the
Codex and enumerating some of its powers:
"The Codex is a large tome 3 feet by 2 feet in size and 8 inches thick. It
weighs an incredible 395 lbs and is very difficult to move around. The
covers of the Codex are wrapped with a black reptilian-like hide (an
outer-planar beast of great power that has been extinct for uncounted
millennia, thus unidentifiable) with banding, corner protectors and 4
latches made of an unusual, extremely hard, brownish metal (tantulhor).
The latches do not lock, but are merely to keep the cover closed when the
book is being moved around. If the codex is left open for an extended
period of time, the book will close and latch itself. Annoyingly, this
only happens when no one is watching. It is a true Codex -- a "Z" fold
book. One side (spine) each hooks to one cover. So it is opened and
flipped through. Then flipped and the opposite side is unlatched and
opened to see the reverse pages.
The material of the cover itself, visible on the inside of the cover when
the book is open, appears to be a black, obsidian-like material which
cannot be affected by any physical or magical force, and closely resembles
the shell material which composes the Crystal Spheres (Hard Galvorn).
The pages of the Codex are composed of a very thin, flexible, dull grey
metal somewhat reminiscent of oxidized lead sheeting but cannot be
scratched, dented, torn, or affected by any normal physical or magical
force.
The Codex is incredibly old, predating any of the known gods, even
predating the Blood War, and may possibly have been created by the beings
that created the planes – or it may be one of them! Unbeknownst to any
being that may temporarily possess it, the Codex is sentient, but has an
intelligence so alien that not even the Powers understand its nature
though they all greatly fear it. Only Boccob the Greater God of Magic may
know that it is more than just another powerful artifact, and he isn't
9
about to talk about it. The latches and leather wrapping may be uncounted
millenia old (and indestructible), but are still a relatively recent
addition to the book, and not technically part of it."
"In the distant past the High Wizard Priest of the Isles of Woe (now
sunken beneath the waters of the Nyr Dyv) discovered this work and used
its arcane powers to dominate the neighboring states, but legend also has
it that these same powers eventually brought doom to the mage-priest and
his tyrannical domain. It must be that somehow the Codex survived the
inundation, for the archmage Tzunk scribed the following fragment prior to
his strange disappearance:
'. . . , and the two strong slaves lifted it [the Codex] from the back of
the Beast [Efreet]. Thereupon I commanded the Brazen Portals to be brought
low, and they were wrenched from their hinges and rang upon the stone. The
Efreet howled in fear and fled when I caused the page to be read, and the
Beast passed into the City of Brass. Now was I, Tzunk, Master of the Plane
of Molten Skies. With sure hand I closed Yagrax's Tome [the Codex],
dreading to –'"
Suffice to say, the Codex of Infinite Planes has the power to affect the
Multiverse. Inside its metal pages are rituals allowing anyone – even
lucky mortals – to change and transform the very fabric of existence. With
the Codex one can create new life, new worlds. With the Codex, one can end
ALL LIFE, destroy all worlds. It is the source of Ultimate Knowledge. It
is the source of Ultimate Destruction.
Only the truly skilled, powerful – or utterly foolish but lucky – can read
the Codex and understand what it says, without being destroyed at the
first turn of the page. It is not uncommon that a terrifying extra-planar
fiend is summoned instantaneously but unknowingly at the turn of the
Codex's page, only to devour the reader whole. And anyone who reads the
Codex and thinks that he controls the Ultimate Power is always thinking
WRONG – it is the Codex who controls him. The reader will always become
the Slave to the Codex.
So let this serve as a warning to those foolish enough to seek the Codex,
without knowing the consequence of its act.
10
From the foregoing it is evident that the item is very large and of
exceptional power. Any person reading its 99 damned pages is 99% certain
to meet a terrible fate (1% cumulative chance per page). The Codex's other
pages have the keys to instant physical transference to any one of the
other planes and alternates of any world or universe. The total number of
pages is unknown. The work will destroy instantly any character under 11th
level of experience who touches it, but those of 11th level or higher who
make a saving throw versus magic can command the powers and effects of the

The Diary of the Black Queen: Written in Common; Madness: none; Areas of
Knowledge: nobility and royalty — personalities — Queen S'lindra +2;
Secrets: contains the secret confession of Queen S'lindra (a queen who
11
ruled several generations ago in the kingdom of your choice) that her son
was not fathered by her husband, calling into question the validity of the
lineage of the current ruling family; Spells: none; Copies: though others
may have been made, only the original copy is in the handwriting of the
queen and thus only that copy is valuable; Market Price: valueless to most
persons, though perhaps worth 1,000 gp to sages interested in noble
lineages; priceless to the ousted sons who could use this diary to
discredit the current king and establish their rightful rule. This small,
decorative woman's diary has no title. It contains mostly inane
observations of the daily doings at court, with the exception of the short
entry detailing the queen's dalliance with a passing minstrel and her
subsequent private confession that the minstrel fathered her son -- the
eventual king. Most readers will not understand the significance of this
volume unless they study it carefully and make a Knowledge (nobility and
royalty) check (DC 20). [D&D Supplement]
De Umbrarum Regni Novem Portis (AKA The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of
Shadows): by Aristide Torchia, Venice, 1666. The book contains nine
woodcut engravings rumoured to be copied from the apocryphal
Delomelanicon, a book purportedly written by the devil himself. The Nine
Gates is said to contain within its pages knowledge to raise the devil.
The author was burned, along with all his works in 1667. [Web]
The Disks of Mishakal: or Peripas Mishakas in the Istaran tongue, are a set
of 160 platinum disks, each one-sixteenth of an inch thick and eighteen
inches in diameter and magically weigh fifteen pounds (instead of over
1,900, which means the book floats in water!). Its strength is also
enhanced on both the pages and ring such that it cannot be defaced, melted
by Dragon fire, or bent under weight. Words of an unknown language are
engraved into both sides of each disk, and a golden ring (It is actually
an oblong shape like a paper clip with outside measurements of 13" long,
4" wide, and made of 1/2" in diameter gold.) binds the disks together in
such a way that each disk can be read then swung up and over the top of
the ring top to read the back and expose the next page. The ring punches
through the disks about 1" in. The rune spirals start at where the ring
punches through. The pages are 1/16" thick with engraving about .0125"
deep on each side, such as to appear deep but not break through where they
overlap front to back.
12
pages easily visible or determined. There are no illustrations. It is
unknown whether the disks are flipped right to left or left to right or if
the engraved runes are read spiral in or spiral out or if it can also be
read across. It must be translated to even determine the beginning. The
translated words of a single disk can easily fill dozens of pages. A
complete reading can grant the ability of a first level cleric of any of
the gods of light (good). A rereading or a reading by an existing good
cleric grants a single level increase. This rereading also grants a
permanent increase of +1 to Wisdom. Paladins reading the complete work
gain the Wisdom bonus and an extra clerical spell in each level they are
able to cast.

flame. The book must normally be kept on a stone pedestal. The two lesser
copies are written on azer skin and bound in salamander hide. They burn
only slightly and cause 1d6 fire damage per round. [D&D Supplement]

Third Imaskarcana: The true names of the seven tremendously powerful magic
tomes of the Imaskari were lost long ago, so they are collectively
referred to as the Seven Imaskarcana. Records mentioning them have shown
up with just enough regularity to convince sages that these books must
have once existed. Today, one of the Seven Imaskarcana remains preserved
in Deep Imaskar. The fate of the others is unknown, and even the wisest of
the Deep Imaskar are not certain that the others, if they still exist, are
similar in form, function, and power to the Third. In fact, it is likely
that each of the Seven Imaskarcana has a different appearance and
property.
The Third Imaskarcana is a massive elephant folio sized tome (25" tall).
It is bound in blue slate covers wrapped and lined in blue dragon hide.
Its pages vary in composition and appearance – some are raggedly cut
vellum, others are the skin of humans, elves, or even tanar'ri (devil
hide), and still others are made of crystal that magically possesses the
flexibility of paper without its weaknesses. Most pages are deckled edged
and a few are gilt. Almost all are one sided, as vellum normally is.
Anyone who carries the Third Imaskarcana gains spell resistance of +50%.
Any other power, of the tome must be commanded to function. The Third
Imaskarcana can't be read like a standard tome. Instead, questions or
commands must be posed to it in Roushoum (the tongue of Imaskar), since it
recognizes only that language. If a question or command is directed at the
tome in any other language, the questioner is immediately sucked into the
tome, where he or she becomes a fine new vellum page. (A Creature so
destroyed can be returned to life only by means of an alter reality spell,
a wish, miracle, or the actions of a deity. A limited wish has a 50% to
work.).
Anyone who successfully communicates with the tome can use the following
powers as spell-like abilities (caster level 18th), each l once per day:
dominate monster, imprisonment, meteor swarm, and time stop. Additionally,
the Third Imaskarcana can answer questions once per day, as though via a
commune spell. [Web]

In the beginning the Supreme Being created the universe then rested. As he
slept the Greater entities Cur, Lepp, and Na came from his dreams and spun
and did mischief trying to create and populate the universe after their
own fashion. None had enough power. Cur and Lepp joined and became one
entity. Curlet (the pronunciation changed over centuries) is still
worshipped by Barbarian tribesman. Na was left out and could only scream
his discontent. He screamed and screamed until all that was left was the
echo of his voice. Some say The Lord of Entropy is Na, but the Lord is
Na's only creation. Na still waits at the edges of creation only his
scream of rage remains for those who can find it. Call upon it to unmake

Special Books (Unique, may or may not be single use.)
Arazni's Canopic Jars: The first four canopic jars are made of greenware-
like clay made from clay dust pounded with blood. They perpetually seep
blood and leave stains. They smell of dried blood. The stand about one
cubic tall and weigh 15 pounds each. Even Batibat weighs 12 pounds. The
25
fifth canopic vessel, of Batibat, is a sealed and carved skull, but it
leaves the smell of decay wherever it is left.
Muhatchi: The human horned demon god representing the north, contains the
lungs of Arazni and is protected by the goddess Nitocris the Mistress of
Magic.
Derogoth: The one eyed horned demon god representing the east, contains
the stomach of Arazni and is protected by the goddess Talona, the
Poisoner.
Ramses: The four eyed demon god representing the south, contains the liver
and is protected by the goddess Lilith, Goddess of Lust.
Imhotep: The no eyed demon god representing the west, contains the
intestines and is protected by the goddess Serqet, the Scorpion Queen.
Batibat: It the lion-faced demon god representing the center, contains the
crystal of the Crown Chakra of Arazni and is protected by Takhisis, the
Dragon Queen.
[Pathfinder but rewritten by Fred Haskell 2018]
Arc of Vlactos: A large obelisk, 3.5" foot tall by 30" wide by 6" thick
carved slab of green Mnar stone. It's runes are all in the ancient pre-
26
human language of "R'lyehan." There is ancient knowledge and spells carved
into its front and back. Technically it is an Ark. [Cthulhu]
Black Stone of Ixaxar: Large black stone about the size of an orange. It is
a black stone called the Sixtystone, as it displays sixty characters
written on its several random non-parallel sides. It is a cut polyhedral.
Its unspeakable secret name is Ixaxar. The characters are in "Naacal," the
Primal Tongue of Mu. It contains spells. [Cthulhu]

The Merry Enchantments of Lutas Vaul, Vol. IV. -- ?
The Merry Enchantments of Lutas Vaul, Vol. VI. This, the sixth volume in the
collection, contains complete instructions for the following: Cloning;
Magikal Enslavement (binding others completely to your will): Making of
Magik Rings: Constructing a Magikal "color trap" that will negate or
"trap" any color chosen that may be worn or inherent to the user of this
magik; The complete "Exploding Man" ritual (or The Green Man Bomb); A
treatise on "The Intrinsic Pleasures of BDSM when Combined with Magikal
Stimuli in a Baroque Setting."
Any Magik User may learn from and use this book. However, if said mage is
not Lutas Vaul himself (there can be only one ?), he must, each time he
wishes to use the book, "give of himself" to the Guardian that is the
book's cover/stand. Thus he must insert a random body part between the
"covers" of the book to be consumed by it. Note that the body part must be
of at least 1" in overall size (length, diameter, girth or whatever) and
weigh at least .1 ounce. Nor may it be hair, unless the mage is willing to
give up the supporting tissue as well (can you say scalp/skin??).
Therefore the "offering" can be skin, complete finger/toe nails (nope, no
parings), joints, teeth, digits or whatever else the mage wishes to part
with...permanently (such offerings never re-grow/regenerate…ever). All
such "offerings" are consumed with slurpy, gobbly, gulping noises followed
by a loud belch, whereupon the book will open completely. The tome is 4'3"
X 2'1.5" and weighs 300 pounds.
The mage may then safely use the book and learn from it. Also note that
the book cannot be damaged by anything of less than OP20 in power or STR
30, nor can the Guardian be dispelled or "sent away" by any means.
Further, if "left open" for more than one hour without being used, it
closes, necessitating the above "ritual" once again. [Paul Mosher, Arduin]

The Merry Enchantments of Lutas Vaul, Vol. VIII. -- ?
The Merry Enchantments of Lutas Vaul, Vol. XII. Collection of eighth and
ninth level spells used by and (some) created by Lutas Vaul.
The Merry Enchantments of Lutas Vaul Vol. XIII. This, the 13th volume in the
collection, contains all Magik user spells of the 10th Order of Power. It
also contains complete instructions on creating a Bronze Golem capable of
receiving a twelve-word command, in addition to the method for permanently
"hasting" it to a CF of 15!!
Any Magik User may learn from and use this book. However, if said mage is
not Lutas Vaul himself (there can be only one ?), he must, each time he
wishes to use the book, insert his head into the mouth(?) orifice of the
Spectral-Demonic guardian pictured. Then, over a 1 melee round period he
is subjected to a psychik attack of his very worst nightmares and fears
(NO psychik save allowed). For each second thus enraptured, the mage must
roll his EGO –4 (6 rolls, no cheating!). If he fails any of these "saves"
he is then sucked into the guardian and ceases thereafter to exist (except
in the Hell he now inhabits eternally). In the odd event the mage's EGO is
24 or higher he must still roll at least 16 on 1D20 in order to "save" (no
loopholes either!). The tome is 4'3" x 2'1.5", and weighs 300 pounds.
Success, on the other hand, means the mage may safely use the book and
29
learn from it. Also note that the book cannot be damaged by anything of
less than OP20 in power or STR 30, nor can the Guardian be dispelled or
"sent away" by any means. Further, if "left open" for more than one hour
without being used, it closes, necessitating the above "ritual" once
again. High price? Yes. But Powerful Magik!! [Paul Mosher, Arduin]
The Merry Enchantments of Lutas Vaul, Vol. XIV. Only Fragments seemingly
copied from it have ever been found. It covers his delving into other
dimensions and alternative lichdom.
Kantharga Stone: An eight inch long lozenge shaped ellipsoid stone, blue and
green in color. The colors swirl and are multichromatic, changing from
blue to green. It resembles a butterfly wing, only translucent. Lengthy
writing in an unknown script floats inside the stone. [Cthulhu]
N'gral Khul (Talons of the Dark): Two bookend sized standing tablets (about
12" tall, 1" thick, the base being 1.5" thick) that fit together to form a
whole. They actually can be bookends. They are carved with ancient runes
of the Tcho-Tcho people called the Aklo language. There are carvings on
both sides of each. Two spells are contained on them. They are made of
30
only electro green serpentine. Each side contains one spell. One summons a
demon; one dispels a demon. [Cthulhu]
R'lyeh Disk: The disk is made almost entirely of otherworldly gold with a
handful of small diamonds (1-2 carats, about 100 stones). The diamonds
will glow and although their placement appears random (but for the bird's
eye) they reveal a star map of the heavens for locating various sites. The
disk is 2" thick and 22" in diameter. It weighs 8,439 ounces (7,692 Troy
ounces) or 527 pounds (641 Troy pounds). The information on the disk and
its back reveal ancient knowledge and spells. The writing is in "R'lyehan"
glyphs on its edge and front, with some writing on the back. The bottom or
reverse side of the disk portrays an octopoid figure, with swirls and
curves carved with runes and set with gems that glow even in daylight.
[Value in gold alone is just over $160,000 in 1920's COC.] [Cthulhu]
31
The Seventh Column: The seventh column is a 6 part obelisk that is marked in
"Ptetholite," a pre-human language. There is a missing "seventh piece"
capstone which actually can be fitted anywhere in sequence. The pieces can
be stacked and being cubic (more or less) rotated in several alternate
ways to reveal new information and spells, as the language and designs
form new words and meanings when moved about. Thus a simple set of blocks
about 8 inch cubes each (~8"X~8"X~8"), can be "built" to form various
forms of a 48" tall obelisk. It is heavy, being made of the Green Stone of
Mnar. Each piece weighs about 15 pounds. [Fred Haskell 7-25-2017]
