3D Models Created
The 3D models will need to be created in CAD software that exports as one of file formats
mentioned above.
You will need to request information in order for the models to be created such as drawings
containing plans, sections, elevations etc.
Most 3D modellers will use a layering system when creating models to view their models
Basically the aim is to make life as easy as possible to use the 3D filters once in
Synchro; the requirements are listed below
This will depend on which CAD software that you are using as some will create naming/tree
structure automatically and some will be manually created.
The example below shows the tree created from a DWF export from AutoCAD but most CAD
software will follow these conventions-
The naming structure will assist
Recognising objects or object grouping in layers/levels
Object IDs
AutoCAD
The list shown is the same model created in AutoCAD with an
example of the type of tree structure that this type of software
creates.
If you are using AutoCAD, SketchUp etc. you will need to create
layers that correspond to level of detail of tree structure you require.
Therefore:
Office Building.dwf is name of the file exported
Columns L0 Area 3 is the name of the layer
Solid (3D) [4F8E] is the name of the object and the figure in
brackets [4F8E] is the Object ID which will be used so Synchro
recognises this object.
Most CAD technicians/designers will create a naming convention that
is relevant for their own purposes
td
Splitting model
Consider the Level of Detail required for the 4D Project.
If possible you can tell the modeller the level of detail that you want the models to be created.
Splitting Individual Objects
You may have a slab that is modelled as one object
Obviously the modellers can't read the schedulers mind, but he can prepare the models for best
use in Synchro
Grouping/ Individual Objects
If the schedule has objects assigned to different levels for example, you have the option if
the models are split this way.
td
Exporting as separate files
When exporting/saving models from CAD consider the best preparation for when you
import into Synchro.
You can help yourself when you come to filter objects; please see the examples below
using the training project models-
This could be exported as separate files as shown below (This is similar to what you will
see in this training)
td
4.8 Importing DWF Model Files
Note
Obviously there will be times when you need to modify these settings to get the required
result in import.
td
4.8.2 Import 3D
1. Select File>Import> 3D
2. Select Add files
Locate the training DWF files. Holding down the Ctrl key you can select the following files:
Existing Site.dwf
New Landscaping.dwf
Office Building.dwf
Site Infrastructure.dwf
3. Select Open
4. Note: By selecting Next you can modify the Import 3D settings explained previously in
4.8.1 3D Import Set Up
5. Select Import
The Resource Wizard is shown-
Important Note
When 3D Objects are imported into Synchro, they are just 3D representations that can be
viewed and manipulated in the 3D View
In order for 3D geometry to be linked to the project schedule they must be assigned to
Resources
These should be considered ‘3D Resources’ which can be in essence a copy of the object
name or several objects grouped together as one ‘3D Resource(s)’
A Resource is anything utilised by a project schedule.
td
6. Activate Assign to a new Resource option, which will automatically create new resources
within the Synchro Project to represent the 3D elements
7. Select Next
Enter Resource details as shown-
The Resource creation can be used to help filter or group the imported 3D objects.
td
4.9 3D Resources Creation
The easiest way to describe this is if we consider the crane example below-
The crane is split into 5 CAD files called 1 to 5, each containing several items.
To create a single resource to which multiple objects are combined when importing one or multiple 3D
files.
You will import files 1 to 5 and will have one resource (which you have named as Tower
Crane) for the whole crane-
To create a single resource to which multiple objects are combined within each 3D file name when
importing multiple 3D files.
td
4.9.3 Assign to this Resource, build tree
To create multiple resources with the same tree structure as exists in the corresponding 3D objects list
when importing one 3D file.
You will import files 1 to 5 and will have a resource for each of the individual items of the
crane as a list under the heading ‘Tower Crane’
To create multiple resources with the same tree structure as exists in the corresponding 3D objects list
when importing multiple 3D files.
You will import files 1 to 5 and will have a resource for each of the individual items of the
crane with the same tree structure as the CAD data under the Resource heading ‘Tower
Crane’
td
For this tutorial we will give each individual item a resource
1. Select Add Resources underneath, build tree
2. Select Next
At this point Synchro will read-in the 3D files, analysing their content and creating associated
material resources
During this process you may be confronted with the following warning:
(This will happen if you’re using the sample files!)
td
5. 3D View
5.1 3D Window Navigation
Zoom
Within the 3D window click the right mouse button and select Zoom> Zoom All
An alternative to the Axis Indicator in the 3D View is the View Cube. The View Cube also allows the
user to manipulate the 3D view.
(Ensure that axis indicator is enabled by right click in 3D View>Visual Indicators> Axis
Indicator)
To enable the View Cube, select 3D from the Ribbon, then check the box next to View Cube
Manipulator
Left click on points or faces on the cube and the view will rotate to that viewpoint, or hold down
the left mouse button on the circle to rotate
In 3D Ribbon>Fast Settings, you can also change the colour of the background for the selected
and other 3D views.
td
6. 3D Sets
With the 3D Sets data set, 3D filters allows you to show or hide elements of the 3D model to make it
easier to visualise and work with…
1. Select Navigator> 3D Sets
2. Tick the box next to 3D Object Filter and highlight the text as shown below-
3. Open the General Tab and ensure that the box is activated
next to 3D
4. Open the 3D tab and click on Mark All to unhide all the
items
5. Right click within the 3D list and select Collapse>All
You will see that the tree structure is the same as the imported 3D CAD model, so it is important
for the modeller to think about this when creating the models.
td
If you click on the sign next to each DWF file you will see that you then have the layer the
items are on.
Click the sign next to a layer and you will see the individual items which you can hide or unhide
as you so wish.
Enabling the box next to the following will show in the 3D View (Disabling will hide in the 3D
View)-
File name
Layer
Object name
For example-
Selecting Existing Site.dwf will show all the layers and objects in contained in that file
Selecting the Existing Site layer will show all the objects in that layer
Selecting invidual or muliple objects will show all that have been enabled

You will see the roof is now transparent and you can see inside.
The Roof will now become transparent over the duration of the
MEP elements being installed (as shown below) then it returns to
original colour
td
Review MEP
10. Select task MEP Equipment [ST00600] then select the Ribbon Task> Focus Time on
Centre of Task
11. Drag the Focus Time just before task MEP Equipment [ST00600] then move it forward
so you can see the MEP installation and Roof changing to Transparent.
12. Manually move the Focus Time over the task bar
You now should have all the items within Office Building.dwf unhidden but you will not see
any item because you have assigned all of them to tasks as Install so they haven’t been installed
yet.
This is a good check to ensure you have assigned all the items to their required tasks. If you
have items visible you will need to link them.
td
9.16 Cutting Planes
1. Ensure that the Focus Time is at the end of the project so all Office Building objects are
visible

Open the Rotate tab to see the options below
td
9.17.5 Translating 3D Objects (Snapping to element)
It has been decided that the initial office that was installed is also going to move to a new
location.
We will move this using point to point snapping.
Important Note
When a 3D Resource has been assigned to a task it will use its designated point of assignment.
You can move this point using Edit As Assigned explained later
In this scenario it is advised to unassign the 3D Resource from its assigned task, relocate, then
assign with its new designated point of assignment
1. Select the Site Office shown below then right click and select Unassign from ‘Assigned to’

4. Select Play
td
10. Synchronising 3D files
10.1 Synchronising to Updated 3D Files
If a design revision is made it is possible to modify the 3D models and retain the assigned links
(Synchronise)
Consider the example-
The roof is to be made wider and 8 columns are to be introduced to support it as shown below-
The model has been prepared to accommodate these revisions following 4 rules-
All the items that you imported originally will need to be exported from the CAD system.
Obviously any that are deleted will be deleted when you synchronise the model.
All new items need to import into Synchro when you synchronise but they will need to be
assigned to task activities.
All modified 3D data needs to have the same name and ID number so Synchro recognises it
as the same item and will retain its assignment. (In this training the Level 2 Roof is wider
but has the same naming structure, so retains the assignment to the task)
You can export this file now as the same file name or a different name. (It doesn’t matter)
In this case the model is then exported from the CAD system as Office Building 2
1. Select Navigator> 3D Sets
2. Select Clear, then show Office Building.dwf (As this is the file to be synchronised)
3. Select the Navigator> External Data button
4. Right click on Office Building.dwf and select Synchronise From… then Browse
5. Select Office Building Updated.dwf then Open
6. You can select Next to change some of the import settings if required.
7. Select Synchronise
8. You will be presented with the following window- select Yes
td
The Synchronisation… window below will appear
You will see that no resources have been lost so the Roof Slab is still assigned to related task.
There are more new objects than old as we have also added the new roof columns.
3 objects have been subdivided and retained.
9. Click Create Resources for new 3D Objects (as subtree) Select OK
10. Drag the Focus Time back to the beginning of the project and you will see that the Roof
Columns are floating in mid-air.
These objects have not been assigned to a task yet.
td
10.2 Assigning to Existing Resource
One advantage of assigning to an existing resource is that if the original resource has been
assigned to a task, then the new objects will automatically be assigned there too.
In the scenario below we will assign to the Steel Level 2 resource which has been assigned to
task using a growth Use Profile
Select the columns that have not been assigned (either in the 3D View, or the name Roof
Columns from the 3D Objects List). Then right click in the 3D window and select
Resources Wizard…
td
11. Synchronising Programmes/Schedule & Baselining
11.1 Baselining in Synchro
A baseline (or snapshot) can be created to compare planned against actual in Synchro
1. Select Navigator> 3D Sets
2. Select Clear, then Mark All
4. Right click within the task window and select Select All
5. You will be presented a Select all Tasks window- select OK
6. Right click again in the task window and select Baseline Selected Tasks
7. This message appears-
8. Select Yes
The Baseline Critical Path tasks are shown in solid blue whereas the other tasks are outlined
blue as shown below-
9. Select Navigator Baselines and change the name of Baseline dd/mm/yy to Original
Schedule dd/mm/yy. Ensure that the name is highlighted - this displays the baseline in the
Gantt Chart.
td
11.2 Synchronising Schedules/Programmes
When synchronising these original import/export schedules, all updated progress of original tasks as
well as changes in dates/durations along with any new/deleted tasks will be added or deleted
according to the schedule that the synchronisation is coming from.
When Synchronise to is used the changes will come from Synchro, and when Synchronise from is
used, the changes will come from the other scheduling system.
td
11.3 Basic rules for Scheduling Software
P6
GUID is primary information to compare, if the Activity is not found in GUID (Global Unique ID’s)
map and the option to use Activity IDs is set the IDs are compared. If not found the Activity is
considered as new one. If found; the Activity and GUID map are updated.
Therefore-
-If the original schedule and P6 database are used to update, Synchro will look for GUID’s when
synchronising.
- If the original schedule has been copied then updated or a different P6 DB has been used, if the
GUID’s are not found then Activity ID’s will be compared provided they have not been changed.
It is possible to change the ID’s in both P6 and Synchro.
The schedules can be synchronised using a different computer and can have a different file name
P3
Uses Activity ID’s therefore it is possible copy a schedule then update provided the Activity ID’s
are retained.
In P3 activity IDs are unchangeable
The schedules can be synchronised using a different computer and can have a different file name
Asta
When making copies of the original schedules that are created in other systems; the global unique
ID of each task will be changed in the process of copying.
Therefore when a copy is made and introduced into the synchronisation workflow the change will
be made to the original task’s own internal UID (unique identifier).
This will result in Synchro not recognising the task as the same, therefore all prior resource
assignments will be lost. It is essential that the original import/export schedule is used throughout
the workflow. If copies are introduced, it is important that they are only for side reference or
saved as an archive as required, but at all times updates and changes are synchronised between
Synchro and the original or original updated schedule.
In essence, the original and updated schedules throughout the workflow process should be from
the same source schedule and NOT copied versions.
The programme can be synchronised using a different computer and can have a different file
name
td
Skip
This means that this type of object will not be processed.
The schedule in Synchro will ignore the new updated schedule when synchronising.
Synchronise
This means that objects will be synchronised according to the following rules:
- All added attributes in the new schedule will be added to the existing schedule in Synchro
- All modified attributes will be modified accordingly
- All deleted attributes in the new schedule will be deleted from the existing schedule in Synchro
Note
The option to Synchronise is not available for P5 and P6 global objects (such as Calendars, Resources,
Risks and Activity Codes) since these cannot be deleted, but it is the default choice for P3.
Synchronisation of Risks from Primavera is not supported in the current Synchro release.
The schedule in Synchro will be replaced with the new updated schedule when
synchronising.
Consolidate
This is similar to synchronisation, except that objects in the target system will not be deleted. Therefore,
the following rules apply-
- All added attributes in the new schedule will be added to the existing schedule in Synchro
- All modified attributes will be modified accordingly
- All the new attributes created in Synchro will be left untouched.
The schedule in Synchro will be merged with the new updated schedule when synchronising.
Integrate
This is the default choice for Resources and Resource Assignments and is used when several
schedules have been imported into Synchro
This will only affect the ‘source’ schedule, if several schedules have been imported to Synchro
- All added attributes in the new schedule will be added to the existing schedule in Synchro
- All modified attributes will be modified accordingly
- All deleted Resources from the new updated ‘source’ schedule will be deleted from the existing schedule
in Synchro
- Attributes created in Synchro will remain.
Summary
Therefore please consider which of the attributes you need to change the option.
Any attribute that you have added, modified in Synchro since importing will need to be considered.
For example if you have not created any tasks, calendars etc. in Synchro, but just created Resources and
Resource Assignments- those are the only two options that you will be required to Consolidate to ensure
that Synchronisation works perfectly and all assignments are retained.
td
5. As you have added new tasks, links, and resources from 3D items and assigned resources
change the following to Consolidate, then select the Synchronise button
Resources

11.4 Compare Baseline (using 3D views)
You can compare the current baseline with the proposed new schedule, by following these steps:
1. From the Windows Ribbon select 3D: to create another 3D View (which is typically
positioned above the first 3D View)
2. Select (in the new 3D View yellow title bar shown) and drag the new 3D View over the first 3D
View, and release the left mouse button over the right side smart window placement icon.
A preview of where the view will be placed will be shown before you drop the view in place.
3. Modify the new 3D View to present a viewpoint similar to the first 3D View
4. Right-click in the first 3D View and select Dates To Use> Baseline from the context
menu
td
Move the Focused Time through the project to review how the new schedule falls behind the baseline
The Focused Time for the Baseline is behind that of the new schedule as the excavation has yet to be
completed compared with the updated schedule which is part way through construction
