This school year, my goal as a building leader was to facilitate building-wide knowledge about
digital safety, etiquette, and responsible technology use. I organized my intentions by designing
opportunities for teacher understandings, parent understandings, and most importantly, student
understanding. Not only did this initiative focus on proper use of technology, but also how to avoid the
improper use of technology.
To start,I coordinated a school-wide digital citizenship event at Davis Elementary. The event was
celebrated from October 16-19 during Digital Citizenship Week. During that week, I spoke on the morning
announcement about the theme for each day, which included digital citizenship, online respect, online
safety, and validity of websites.
Additionally I created a Google Classroom for each grade level. Teachers had their students join
their Google Classrooms prior to the start of Digital Citizenship week. An example Google Classroom can
be viewed by joining class 3kqzcj, the third grade Digital Citizenship class. Each day, students got on their
Google Classrooms and completed a lesson and activity. The lessons were tailored for each grade level
and ranged from online and EdPuzzle videos, to interactive games. The activities included
student-created Google Slides, Padlet collaboration boards, online games, and student-created Flipgrid
videos (Grid Password: Burkes18).
In order to reach more people, student work was displayed around the building alongside posters
advocating for digital citizenship. QR codes were displayed in hallways for students, parents, and staff so
that they could view digital Flipgrid videos and Google Slides created by the students. Some of these
resources are still available for viewing around the school.
We evaluated the discipline referrals for grades 3-5, and it was calculated that 3% of office
referrals were related to severe computer misuse. This evidence supports that the digital citizenship
training in October would be beneficial for students, and the knowledge gained during this time would
contributed to them using their computers in a respectful and responsible manner.
The artifacts below include flyers, my grade level lesson plans, links to activities, and photos of
work displayed around our school. The links to the Digital Padlets, Flipgrid videos, and Google
Classrooms are still available for review.

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility:
Being a Superhero in the Digital World
How? Students will learn about internet safety, being respectful online,
and website credibility during this fun packed week!
Why? “If we're going to empower students to create and share online,
we've also got to teach them how to responsibly wield the power of
connectivity.”
Next steps? Discuss with your child what they learned about being a
superhero in the digital world, and keep open communication about
technology with your child. The link provided below has more information
about digital citizenship.
