Degree to Which Goals Were Met

Goals 1 and 2: ___ Outstanding Effort ___ Met ___Not Met X In Progress

(C = Commendation R= Recommendation)

Comments:

With regard to Goal 1, (C1) you scheduled and followed through on administering regular, ongoing
informal classroom observations. C2) This process included using a feedback sheet which sparked
meaningful dialogue regarding teachers’ classroom practice. Regarding Goal 2, (C3) all grade levels set
goals pertaining to both academic and social/emotional learning; teams met regularly throughout the year
to implement plans related to these goals.

(C4) Teachers are committed to meeting in grade level teams to work on identified target areas. (C5)
Additionally, teachers in all grade level teams have signed up for collaborative curriculum mapping time.

As an instructional leader, you need to (R1) be more articulate regarding your vision and plan for next steps
in improving curriculum/assessment/instruction in all content areas. With curriculum mapping and interim
and performance-based assessments being key district goals, (R2) this will require devoting more time to
gaining more expertise in this area so you can be more vocal in sharing insight that moves your staff
forward. Your leadership is not based on your knowledge of elementary school standards, but rather on
principles and best practices of curriculum design, assessment and teaching learning theories and methods.

Demonstrating instructional leadership not only requires knowledge/expertise and sharing specific insight
and feedback, but (R3) articulating a roadmap (written and visual plan) of where we are heading and why,
as well as where we are along the way with regard to multiple site-based goals and endeavors.

(R4) Be pro-active in reporting/sharing documentation regarding your progress with these goals. Per your
self-assessment, this is a domain of educational leadership that warrants further attention and learning;
(R5) demonstrate initiative and urgency so you are, and are seen as, a leader in these areas.

Goal 3: ___ Outstanding Effort ___ Met ___ Not Met X In Progress

Comments:

This has been a challenging year in building a staff culture in which members feel confident in your
leadership of the school. As mentioned in one of our March meetings, equal attention and progress is needed
building the Oak Grove Way for staff as it has been with and for students.

(C1) You executed a successful school wide recess time safety drill that required a lot of coordination,
scheduling and planning. While you may have the confidence that plans are progressing and underway,
your staff may not; as with curricular goals and initiatives, (R1) find ways to communicate (memos,
timelines and other visuals) so staff see the goal, progress made, time frame and next steps.

Other areas that warrant further attention include: (R2) creating communicate channels to disseminate
information between small group and committee meetings to whole staff, (R3) arriving at closure of
meetings that consist of follow through re: next steps and procedures, and (R4) clearly articulating principal
and staff roles and ways you support one another with regard to school wide procedures, i.e: student
discipline. (C2) You have recently convened and worked with committees and “think tanks” in areas of
scheduling and end of year logistics and planning. (C3) You have a collaborative nature and approach;
continue administering from this orientation and perspective while (R5) adding initiative, urgency, and
conviction to your repertoire.

RATINGS ON INDIVIDUAL RUBRICS:

A. Strategy

B. First Things First

C. Curriculum and Data

D. Talent Development

E. Culture

F. Management

OVERALL RATING:

Highly Effective Effective Improvement Necessary Does Not Meet Standards

OVERALL COMMENTS BY SUPERVISOR:

Culture: You recurrently communicate the virtues of the Oak Grove Way and community and
acknowledge/celebrate the accomplishments and successes of others. Your regard for students and your
commitment to their well-being is unquestioned. You allocate resources, professional development and time to
training staff on common language and practices that encourage/celebrate diversity and students’ well being.
Well done! Creating a positive staff culture (the Oak Grove Way for staff) must be a priority for next year; a
sense of urgency and initiative is required. Remember that culture/morale is created through doing the work
itself—establishing clear vision, processes and follow through in areas of strategy, curriculum and management
below.

Strategy, Curriculum, and Talent Development: This year you followed through on ensuring they completed a
preliminary process of piloting interim assessments and having all grade level teams collaborate on first drafts of
curriculum mapping. On one hand, you lead by empowering teachers to self-organize to accomplish team goals,
which is appropriate for a veteran and talented staff that you have. On the other hand, your staff would benefit if
you focused as much on instructional leadership as you do on developing a positive student culture—hone your
instructional leadership skills so that, in addition to relying on outside experts and facilitators, staff is guided by
the story, vision, goals, strategy and plan that you develop and communicate regarding your school’s next steps
in curriculum, assessment and instruction. Become versed in and lead the way regarding models of backward
design, curriculum mapping, classroom instructional practices that yield the best data-based results, or other
aspects of this domain.

10

Management: Devote more attention to the Oak Grove Way for adults. You need to gain/restore the confidence
that you are not only a collaborative leader but one that produces clarity and confidence amongst your staff
regarding how decisions are made, delegation, follow through and completion of tasks.

Overall:
You have completed your sixth year as elementary school principal at Oak Grove Elementary.

You bring many skill sets and strengths, as well as a high regard for all students and commitment to their well-
being and growth.

Improvement is necessary in many areas; instructional leadership and restoration of staff confidence and morale
is an urgent and necessary goal.
