Analysis

Content:
Some important scientific ideas that are being taught in this unit plan are both my science
lessons. I have integrated lab activities to allow my students some hands-on material. For my
capillary action lab students make their predictions about what will happen and watch
intently as they experience it firsthand. For my surface tension lab, the students yet again get
to experience this concept first hand, by watching and seeing how many drops the penny
can hold. The students are the scientists, making predictions, analyzing the data, and writing
down what they see. Students enjoy being the ones to predict what will happen. This really
gets students engaged and interested in the subject being taught.

Sequence:
As the teacher I will teach the students about capillary action and about surface tension
before doing the lab activity. That way students aren’t confused about what’s going on
during the lab. They already have that backbone of information, so they know what will
happen and what is happening during the lab. By being taught this information, students will
be well prepared for the lab activity and for a quiz later on in the lesson.

Processes:
With Kindergarten you teach all the subjects, not just one in particular. This unit plan
incorporates all the aspects of the 5E model- engage (working together to find an
outcome), explore (learn new things and enhance learning skills), explain (tell what is
happening), elaborate (reflect back on what you learned), and evaluate (make predictions
and evaluate the information).

Equity:
This unit plan can be easily changed for students who are English language learners, diverse
students, disability students, etc. For students who need extra help, I will work one-on-one
with them to help them better understand. For students that are advanced for the content, I
will have them work on their own and create their own ideas of what will happen. For
students who are English language learners, I will work with them on their language or I will
provide someone who can help them that way they are getting the learning they need.
