CHARACTERISTICS
OF
PLANTS
1.
PLANTS
ARE
LIVING
THINGS
BECAUSE
ü THEY
ARE
BORN
ü THEY GROW
ü THEY REPRODUCE
ü THEY
DIE
2.
PLANTS
MAKE
THEIR

FOOD
• 3.
PLANTS
ARE
ATTACHED
TO
THE
GROUND
AND
CANNOT
MOVE
FROM
ONE
PLACE
TO
ANOTHER.
4.
PLANTS
HAVE
ROOTS,
A
STEM
AND
LEAVES.
ROOTS
• HELP
THE
PLANT
TO
KEEP
IT
IN
PLACE
• TAKE
IN
WATER
AND
MINERALS
TO
MAKE
ITS
FOOD
STEM
• HELP
THE
PLANT
TO
STAY
UPRIGHT
AND
SUPPORT
THE
LEAVES.
LEAVES
• IS
WHERE
THE
PLANT
MAKES
ITS
OWN
FOOD.
According
to
the
stem…
• We
can
classify
the
plants
as:
Woody

Herbaceous
plant
Woody
plants
•
They
have
a
hard
stem.
• There
are
2
types:
Trees
Shrubs
have
one
large
stem
called
trunk.

thin
stems

ground
Herbaceous
plants
• They
have
a
thin
and
flexible
stem.
According
to
its
flowers…
• We
can
classify
a
plant
as:
Flowering

Non-‐flowering

Flowering
plants
• They
have
flowers,
fruits
and
seeds

we
can´t
see

them,

in

plants
• They

NutriUon
How
do
plants
make
their
own
food?
Plants
make
their
own
food
using
water,
minerals,
air
and
sunlight.
The
process
is:
1.
Roots
absorb
water
and
minerals
from
the
ground.
This
mixture
is
called
raw
sap.
2.
Raw
sap
travels
to
the
leaves
though
vessels
3.
The
leaves
of
a
plant
breathe
in
carbon
dioxide
(gas).
Then,
the
carbon
dioxide
mixes
with
the
raw
sap
with
the
help
of
sunlight
and
transforms
into
a
type
of
sugar
called
elaborated
sap.
This
process
of
making
food
in
the
leaves
is
called
photosynthesis
Parts
of
a
flower
• The
corolla
is
the
collecUon
of
coloured
leaves
around
the
centre
of
the
flower.
Each
one
of
these
leaves
are
petals.
• The
calyx
is
the
collecUon
of
green
leaves
surrounding
the
corolla.
• Each
one
of
these
leaves
are
sepals.
• The
pisUl
is
the
female
organ
where
seeds
are
made.
It´s
made
up
of
the
sUgma,
style,
and
ovary.
• Inside
the
ovary
are
ovules.
• Stamens
are
the
male
organs.
Each
stamen
is
made
up
of
an
anther,
which
contains
pollen,
and
a
filament
.
• The
filaments
holds
up
the
anther.

in
flowers
• The
pollen
of
one
plant
has
to
reach
the
pisUl
of
another
plant.
1.
pollen
is
transferred
from
one
plant
to
another
by
the
wind
or
some
animals.
(pollinaUon)
When
pollen
reaches
the
pisUl,
it
moves
down
to
the
ovary.
Once
there,
a
grain
of
pollen
a_aches
to
an
ovule
and
creates
a
seed
(ferUlisaUon)
The
calyx
and
corolla
fall
off.
Meanwhile,
a
fruit
begins
to
grow
in
an
ovary
and
the
fruit
protect
the
seeds
as
they
develop.
When
the
fruit
is
ripe,
it
falls
to
the
ground.
The
seeds
go
into
the
soil
and
a
new
plant
begins
to
grow
