CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English

grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

Learning Objectives and Assessments:

Learning Objectives Assessment

Students will be able to recognize the beginning Students will work as a class to name words
consonant sounds t, g, n, and p. beginning with t, g, n, and p in the poem, “Go
Away Tiger!” The teacher will assess for
accurate and appropriate responses.

Materials/Resources:
 A copy of “Go Away, Tiger” from Words their Way’s Big Book of Rhymes.
 One set of picture cards corresponding to the letters t, g, n, and p for each student.

Plan for set-up/distribution/cleanup of materials:

 The “paper passers” will distribute the poems to the students in the beginning of the
lesson. They will also hand out the picture cards when it is time.

Lesson Procedure:
1. Lesson beginning:
 The lesson will begin with the students seated at their desks. Each student will be
given a copy of “Go Away, Tiger”. The class will read the poem as a class once.
The teacher will ask four students to raise their hands and name one word in the
poem that begins with either b, m, r, or s, as a review.
2. The teacher will then tell the class that we will now look for a new set of sounds: t, g, n,
and p. The teacher will instruct the students to get a highlighter from their desks and
highlight any words that might begin with this sound. The teacher will read the poem once
more, slowly, as this is done.
3. The teacher will read the poem again after the students have finished highlighting. This
time, she will read each line separately and pause to ask the class if they noticed any words
with those sounds in them. These words may include: tiger, today, getting, goat, go, needs,
and pig.
4. Lesson ending:
 The students will be given the picture cards for t, g, n, and p. They will be asked to
cut them out and place them in their plastic bags. Students who complete the cutting
faster than others will be asked to sort them by their beginning sounds.

Key Questions:
 What words begin with the letters t, g, n, and p?
 What words begin with the letters b, m, r, and s?
 What do you notice that is similar about the words that begin with these letters? What is
different?
 How else can we sort these cards?

Logistics:
Timing:
The lesson will last approximately twenty minutes. Twelve minutes will be dedicated to
reading the poem, and the remaining time will be allowed for cutting the words.
Transitions:
The students will remain at their desks for this lesson. To transition from the poem to the
cutting of the words, the students will be given the picture cards.

Classroom Management:

The teacher will be sure to make expectations explicit and clear from the beginning of the
lesson. The teacher will remind students to continue showing respect to their peers, to the materials,
and to me for the entirety of the lesson. To call the students attention, the teacher will yell, “Barclay
Brook”, and the students will respond by saying, “stop and look”. If a student misbehaves, they
will be asked to “clip down” on the behavior chart. As well, positive behavior will be rewarded by
having students “clip up” or by offering a point to a whole table.

Differentiation
Students who are in need of extra assistance, such as G, AW, M, S, and V, will have
assistance from the adults in the room when cutting out their words. High-level students such as
AL will be asked to sort their words once they have finished cutting their words.
