The reaction is assumed as a uniform stress (s) and therefore the uniform load on the bar is
S.d.

Input Data

Applied force (F) -SLS: 30 kN Concrete strength: 40 N/mm2

Gap (G): 200 mm Dowel bar strength: 650 N/mm2
Embedded length (L): 300 mm
Dowel Bar diameter (d): 50 mm gM0: 1.00
Elastic modulus of dowel: 200 kN/mm2

Resolve forces horizontally (diagram 2):

S.d.x = F + S.d (L-x) x = (F + S.d.L) / (2 S.d) = F/(2 S.d) + L/2 (1)

Take moment about x/2 from surface:

F(G + x/2) = S.d (L-x) ( L/2) (2)

Substitute x from (1) in (2)

F(G + F/ (4S.d) + L/4) = S.d.L(L-F / (2S.d) - L/2) / 2

or
(S.d)2 L2 /4 -S.d (FG+FL/2) - F2/4 = 0

Solve for S, L. F L . F 2 F 2 . L2
( F . G+ )± ( F . G+ )−
2 2 4
S= 2
L .d

Therefore: S1 = 9.7 N/mm²
S2 = -0.4 N/mm² S= 9.7 N/mm²

REF CALCULATIONS OUTPUT

Allowable compressive stress in steel = 0.75 fy = 487.5 N/mm2 OK

Maximum moment occurs where shear is zero

F = S.d .y Therefore y = F/(S.d) = 61.6 mm

Moment: M = F (G + y) - S.d.y2/2 = 6.92 kN

Stresses in the Dowel bar are as follows:

Bending stress = M.d / (2 I) Idowel = p d4 / 64 = 306796 mm4

Therefore bending stress = 564.191 N/mm2

Limiting compressive stress in steel = fy / gM0 = 650 N/mm2 OK

BS EN 1993-1-1 Shear stress = VEd / A = 15.2789 N/mm2 A = p d² /4 VEd = F

CL. 6.2.6
Allowable shear stress: f y g M0 = 1.0
= 375.278 N/mm2
γM 0√3 OK

Deflection:

Assume the fixity to be at 2.d to estimate the deflection.

defl = F (G + 2.d)3 / (3.E.I) = 4.400 mm

Summary of results and checks against failure:

Item Allowable (N/mm2) Applied (N/mm²) Status

Concrete compression 24.00 9.7 OK
Steel compression 487.5 9.7 OK
Bending stress 650 564.2 OK
Shear stress 375.3 15.3 OK
Deflection - 4.400
