5. a) Let f : Rn ! R and a; b 2 Rn . The mean-value theorem for several variables states that if f is
di¤erentiable at each point of the line segment ab, then there exists on ab a point c between a and b such
that
f (b) f (a) = rf (c) (b a) .
Prove this theorem by applying the mean-value theorem for one variable and a special case of the chain rule
to the function g (t) = f (p (t)) where t 2 [0; 1] and

p (t) = a + t(b a):

b) An open set U Rn is said to be connected if any two points of U can be joined by a polygonal path
that lies entirely in U . A polygonal path is a …nite union of straight line segments such that two adjacent
segments share one and only one endpoint. Give examples of an open set that is connected and an open set
that is not connected.
c) Use part a to show that if U is an open, connected set and rf (x) = 0 for all x 2 U then f is constant
on U: Hint: Consider two arbitrary points a; b 2 U and the polygonal path in U connecting them. Observe
that this polygonal path connects some points ci 2 U via straight line segments.
d) Use part c to show that if U is an open, connected set and rf (x) = rg (x) for all x 2 U then f and
g di¤er by a constant on U .
e) A set of points is said to be convex provided that every pair of points in the set can be joined by a
straight line segment that lies entirely within the set. Give examples of a set that is convex and a set that
is not convex.
f) Use part a to show that if krf (x)k M for all x in some convex set then

jf (x) f (y)j M kx yk for all x; y 2 .
