Brief Procedure Falling Dart Impact Tester

1. Environmental Examination
1.1 Lab Condition, Temperature 23 2 
C , Humidity 50 10%RH.The worktable must be steady, unshakable.
There shouldn’
t be wind and articles which are combustible or explosive.
1.2 The power must be single-phase AC 220V+/-10%, 50Hz+/-5%, and the instant fluctuation of voltage should
be within 3V and connected to earth reliably. “N” (Naught) and “E” (Earth) cannot be misused and
connected. Avoid using high-power equipment in the same line. This instrument should not be operated in
the circumstance of vibration or interference by intense electromagnetic wave.
2. Connection of gas and electric circuits
2.1 Connect mainframe and air compressor or gas tank with PU pipe (φ6, φ8). The output pressure of gas
source is between 0.6MPa-0.8MPa.
2.2 Connect the mainframe and power supply with power cord.
3. Instrument Installation
3.1 Unpack the instrument and check if the accessories are accordant with packing list.
3.2 Place the instrument in a suitable position. Loosen off the two screws fixing control box with attached Allen
wrench (Fig.1). Remove the black top cover located on the top of bracket. (Fig. 2), lift up the control box
along the rail and locate it in the right rail of instrument (Fig. 3) with a proper height and fix it with the two
screws again. Avoid damaging the wire during operation.

3.3 Insert the two control wires into the ports located on the bottom of control box.
3.4 Connect the two attached footswitches to the ports located on the base of instrument. Connect the one for
“Clamp/Open”the specimen to the left side of instrument, and the other one for “Test”to the right side of
instrument.
4. Sample
Select smooth samples which should contain no contamination, creases and pinholes. The specimen
should be big enough to be clamped between the cylinders. Cut at least 30 pieces of samples.
5. Test procedure
5.1 Level the instrument firstly with attached horizontal adjustment elements. (one end of the elements is cone,

the other end is a columned iron stick. They are connected with a thread.) Then insert the level pole with
cone into the hole on the downside of bracket, press “EM”to catch up the level pole, later put the level block
on the inner hole of the upper half of clamp. Adjust horizontal adjustment elements to make the cusp of the
cone point to the intersection of the level block. After leveling, press “Impact”key and remove the horizontal
adjustment elements. Take it away from the test area together with level block.
5.2 In test interface, press up or down key to move the cursor. Select test method from Method A or Method B
and then press “Enter”key.
5.3 Step on “Clamp/Open”footswitch and the clamp is separated. Place the specimen between the clamps
carefully and then press “Clamp/Open”footswitch again to clamp the specimen. In the meantime, the light
at the base is on. Check the condition of clamping specimen and place a rubber pad at the base.
5.4 Press “EM”key and attach the dart to electromagnet. Press “Test”footswitch and the dart will drop and
impact the specimen. Catch it rapidly with hand after the dart bounces. Repeat above operations for
several times until the proper missile mass and missile weight increment are found. (Missile weight
increment ΔM means the mass of weight which is added to the missile mass to cause the specimen fail or
is subtracted from the missile mass to cause the specimen non-fail. Less missile weight increment should
be better.)
5.5 After confirming missile mass and ΔM, in test interface, press “Mass”and then “Revise”, input missile mass
with number keys. Press “Save”key to save the value. Then press “ΔM”and “Revise”, input the value of ΔM
with number keys. Press “Save”key to save the value.
5.7 Start a real test. Set missile mass and ΔM. Enter test interface and place the specimen between the clamps.
Press “Clamp/open”footswitch or “Clamp”key to clamp the specimen. Press “EM”key to catch the dart.
The actual mass of weights should be accord with input value. Press “Test”footswitch or “Impact”key. The
dart drops, check if the specimen has or has not failed. If the specimen has failed, press “Fail”and then
–ΔM”. If the specimen has not failed, press “Non-fail”, “Enter”and “+ΔM”. The system will
“Enter”, “
calculate the current missile mass automatically. Increase or decrease weights on the dart accordingly.
Replace the specimen and perform another test according to above operation until test report is printed out.
At least 20 tests are needed to print out the test report. (Set “Print”to “Y”and indicator of printer is on.)
5.8 Shut off the power supply and gas source after test.
6. Precautions
6.1 There are two heights of dart for Method A, the short dart is positioned at the support staff marked with red
50mm, the long dart is positioned at the support staff marked with red 380mm. As for Method B, another
attached support staff should be added.

6.2 Be careful when you place the specimen. Avoid misoperation or pressing footswitch and cause hands
injured.
6.3 The missile mass displayed on LCD must be equal to the actual mass of weights.
6.4 During test, in case the specimen has failed, the sequence of pressing keys should be “Fail”, “Enter”, “–ΔM”;
in case the specimen has not failed, the sequence of pressing keys should be “Non-fail”, “Enter”, “+ΔM”. If a
key is pressed wrongly, the test result will be wrong or no test report will be printed out.
