The Value of Industry Guidelines
and Best Practice Sharing

 Time and cost savings

 Increased safety
 Eased communication and data sharing
 Achieving operational excellence
 Streamlined systems and processes
 Increased operational efficiencies
 Better-educated, more professional employees
 Allows companies to focus on what matters most
Bridge to Formal Standards

 GMSG is not a formal standards organization

 GMSG has official liaison status with ISO TC82
 Assist formation: TC 82 sub-committee on Autonomous Mining
 Sponsorship Australian Chair to TC 251: 55000x Standards
 Engage other standards organizations
Current Project Highlights
 Interoperability Working Group
 3 workshops Q1 2017 (Perth, Denver, Santiago)
 Partnership: CORFO
 Draft consensus definition, scope, priorities development
 Outcome: Working Group detailed plan
 Data Exchange for Mine Software
 OMF 0.9 and Use Cases
 First Vendor committed to implementation
 Underground Mining Working Group

Operational KPIs and Definitions
Objectives
 Develop a common operating KPIs, definitions
and terminology across the mining industry
 Create a standard Time Usage Model which
enables consistent classification and reporting of
operational event and activities
 Identify data required to generate KPIs

Current Status
 Draft Model completed;
 Incorporating feedback from review completed by major project participants
 Piloting Time Usage Model at Gibraltar Mine
 Reviewing definitions for guideline document
Next Steps
 Working Group Review of Model;
 Generate draft guideline document;
 Submit for editing and formatting;
 Determine scope for next stage of project; data collection, additional KPIs, mine data model
Reliability Working Group
Our Purpose:

Establish a set of guidelines for world class reliability practices in the mining industry and a
community of interest for the sharing of knowledge related to reliability in mining

Objectives

 Develop Reliability Best Practices Guidelines, specific to mining.

 Identify relevant metrics for maintenance and reliability

 Enable benchmarking of maintenance and reliability performance

Current Projects

 Develop Reliability Best Practices model and metrics

 Organizing regional forums to solicit feedback on successful reliability and maintenance practices and
issues

 Supporting Mining Sector input to ISO 55000 standards

Status

 Draft Reliability Best Practices model completed; ready for circulation and review

 Organizing workshop in Fort McMurray; May 25, 2017 to validate model and initiate discussions on
best practices

 Organizing workshop in US in Q3

 Kicking off sub-group on Maintenance Work Management Best practices

Autonomous Mining
Purpose: Identify opportunities for collaboration and support innovation
towards autonomous mining across the industry
Projects:
 Industry survey: needs and opportunities
 Definitions
 Consensus Vision of Autonomous Mining
 Autonomous Mining Guideline
 Assist relationship with regulators
 Best practices sharing
 Mapping the change management and requirements to move to autonomy
 Checklists, existing standards, critical impact areas
 Safety
Current Status:
1. Survey launch mid-May, results late June = feed WG strategy
2. Workshop Wednesday PM: Definitions development (based on
existing work ie ISO, WA, other industries); Purpose of guideline
activity: what uses are wanted = scope of guideline
3. Consensus Vision: original draft from 2016 to be updated now with
input from multiple workshops/stakeholders
GMSG Future Mining Forum
Edmonton, October 18-19, 2017

 In partnership with University of Alberta, on campus

 Invitation to SMART to partner
 Invitation to regulators: content focused on industry-regulators
 Key topics to cover: autonomous mining, interopearbility,
integrated operations, reliability, KPIs/definitions/benchmarking

 Ask: organizing committee volunteers (Tim Skinner, Zoli Lukacs,

Tim Joseph)
 Ask: case studies
 Ask: what do you want from the event?
GMSG at CIM
