Happenings

autumn2018 volume 51 issue 1

What does it mean to multiply?
It means to increase or cause to increase in number, and quantity.
That is something CBM is passionate about- multiplying what God has called us to do.

Whatever we give to God, He multiplies. When we give God our talent, energy, time, and resource,
He is faithful to multiply and return it back.

Ecclesiastes 11:1 says, “Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days” (RSV).

We see this truth when Jesus fed the 5000. He took the meager portion
of five little loaves of bread and two dried fish that the child so willingly
offered to Him. “Lord, you can have this,” said the little boy.
It wasn’t much, but he gave it willingly; he gave what he had.
Jesus took what He offered and his small portion fed 5000 with
12 baskets left over! That is multiplication!
CBM believes in multiplication.
For maximum impact, CBM will continue to put forth huge effort
into training and equipping of workers so more will commit to the
Lord and grow in their faith. We will continue the development of our
discipleship curriculum: “Life Changers” and “Knowing God”, both
with translation into 27 and 5 languages respectively. Each of these
curriculums are reaching large numbers of Christian children
throughout the world. 1 Corinthians 15:58 NIV “Always give yourselves
fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour in the
Lord is not in vain”. CBM will continue casting “our bread” and believing for its’ multiplication!
We trust that you will enjoy reading about what’s been happening over the past months and what’s
coming up at CBM both here in NZ and overseas.

God always gives us more than we need, more than we anticipate, and more than
we can imagine. He took what the boy gave him. He broke it, He blessed it, and
He used it. He will use whatever you give Him. Trust Him.

Where we’ve been….and where we’re going

In November 2017 we conducted two successful one week training
courses in the Eastern and North Eastern State of India.
As a result of the latter one, we were asked by a local church
denomination to provide training and curriculum to teachers in their
1100 plus churches. There is certainly a need for heart-transforming
teaching, because the figures of 100% Christian among the 30
different hill tribes has not stopped the constant tribal bickering and
harassment.
In June 2018, we will speak for three days to leaders of that particular denomination, to set before them a Biblical vision and
their responsibilities in supporting the work amongst children. This will enhance our partnership with them. Following this
meeting will be five days of training teachers in one town in the state. In preparation, local people are translating the Life
Changers curriculum into their local dialect, especially for use in village Sunday Schools.
The Sunday School in the town has 1000 children!

In August 2018 Hugh and Ian will travel to Africa for two significant events. Firstly, we have
agreed to partner with a Kenyan denomination of 2,400 churches. Initial training will be given at
their headquarters in Kisumu, and we will be joined for the week by Paul Wachira (CBM graduate
2016). As part of this partnership, we will be seeking sponsorship for course fees for one or two
of their senior children’s workers to attend our international training in NZ in 2019. ($1955 each)

Then we will go to Mozambique for the first time and have training in Manica, where the Life
Changers Curriculum has been translated into Portuguese. Over the years, we have had several
requests for Portuguese teaching materials, mainly for use in Mozambique.

Unfortunately, the people and churches of Mozambique are quite poor by African standards so
we will need to supply the curriculum at a subsidised cost. The amount required for each church
to have a years curriculum is only $45. Can you imagine if we could help put curriculum in the
hands of each attending pastor? What an incredibly small seed to plant into such fertile ground.
Although the cost of travel to Mozambique is high, we trust this will be the start of a growing
relationship with this needy, but spiritually hungry, nation of 30 million people. Please pray about
the possibility of partnering with us.

In November 2018 we will return to India for a further one week training in the capital city.
We will also conduct training in another large city in East India, as well as holding our annual staff
retreat with members from our various India branches.

Because of increasing scrutiny and persecution of Christians in

India, we cannot publish details of the locations of our training.

Students 2017-18
Pictured from the left: Flora (Korea), Michelle, Andrea (both Philippines),
Enos (Indonesia) and Darpan (India) We had the great pleasure of having these
students for four months for the 2018 intake. We are trusting God to do a great
work through them in the time to come, just as He has done for those who
previously attended. We have already received videos and reports of camps being run
and trainings being held and they only returned at the begining of May!
Multiplication is happening!

Updates on the 2017 students include:

Mackinly (Malawi) got a real vision for ministry to children with disabilities in NZ, and has
had several opportunities to raise awareness of this issue in churches, as these children are
often hidden away in Malawi.
At a special Disabilty Awareness gathering (pictured to the right), 75 attended and he
discovered that 80% of the women caring for children with disabilities were single
parents.

Ancy (India) left, has helped run various camps for CBM in the Mumbai area, as well
as teaching Christian Values in a school and giving training to teachers.

Grace (Myanmar) right, has not only run clubs and camps for children, but has also
continued to accept requests to train teachers.
However, she works in a very constrained financial
situation. If you have a burden for the children of
Myanmar, please consider partnering with us to
sow seed into the ground in which Grace is plowing.

Torika, Litia and Nina (Fiji) have had the opportunity to speak to large groups of women
(200 and 500). On both occasions they spoke on the importance of ministering to the
spiritual needs of children, and also on Christian parenting issues. At an Easter service in her large Suva church, Torika had many of
her 600 Sunday School children leading the service, after which she spoke on the need to evangelise children. This not only had a
good effect on the congregation, but was live-streamed through Facebook to 25,300 viewers from the English service and 9,300
from the Fijian services.

CBM curriculum is translated into 27 different

languages and is in at least 40 different countries!
Recently, Life Changers has been translated into
Portuguese. As was stated in Mike’s message, CBM is
on a MISSION of Multiplication!
We want to see Life Changers and Knowing God translated into as many languages
as possible. We are excited as many other translations are in the works, including
Korean.
“I never get tired of the JOY of leading people to
Jesus!” 3 hours after they had heard the gospel
message in the meeting, a new leader came to Mike
saying he had 5 boys who wanted to receive the Lord.
So right there in the hall, not a meeting, devotions or
anywhere special, Mike lead those boys to the Lord!
They had gone away, thought about it, talked with their
leader and were ready to take that step. Thank you Lord!
Look Out For The “GOD MOMENTS”... this is something that was so
apparent to Donna, one of the CBM staff. “As I ran outside to watch
another fantastic sunset, one of the older girl campers came along and we quietly watched the
sunset. I felt prompted by the Lord to ask a question which led to a wonderful conversation
that ended with the Lord touching her heart and tears. The next day the girl’s leader found
me and said, “I’m not sure what you said to her, but she is a different girl today!” Watch for
the moments that seem mundane; God could be working something for His good!

“Hi, I just wanted to thank you all for providing such a wonderful experience for my girls.
I have just collected them and they have spent the last two hours
raving about what a fantastic time they had.”

Kids Connect 2018 was a very special camp. We had 13 children
with disabilities and most of them had been to Kids Connect before. I hear you ask,
“You run a camp for only 13 kids?” The answer is a resounding, “YES!”

For those 13 children, the total number of people in camp is between 45 and 50.
Each child needs a buddy (an able-bodied child of similar age), some children need
a carer and of course, an adult group leader. Then there are all the support roles:
nurse, special needs advisor, activities coordinator, teachers, etc. It is no small
undertaking to put on this weekend camp!

People often comment on the amount of work that goes into making Kids Connect happen for so few children. It helps if we
can see the big picture of what God does at camp. It’s not only ministering to children with disabilities, but also giving vision to
our international students, giving compassion and insight to the buddies, and building long lasting relationships.
For many of the children coming to camp, it is a big highlight of their year. The KC
camps are themed every year and one girl, who has attended several camps, had
spent two months preparing her costume which she proudly wore all weekend!
They were also able to tie dye their own shirts and do loads of other hands-on
activities.
An autistic boy, who has been to camp several times, connected so well with his
leader that he was the most verbal we have ever heard him! It was very special
hearing him asking questions and interacting to a high level all weekend.

The teaching on how God sees each child and values them, regardless of any disability, was well received by all the children.
We were very thankful for a beautiful, sunny weekend and made the most of being outdoors with the bouncy castle, quad
bikes, team games, a scavenger hunt and just sitting outside interacting with each other.

A big thank you to those who gave

towards the new quad bikes.
We have 4 brand new bikes!
The kids were over the moon!
In February, we kicked off our Saturday trainings for this year
with our “First Things First” training day. There was a good
number attending and very positive feedback including these
comments: “I’d highly recommend your
training”, and “Best children’s ministry workshop I’ve ever
attended!”
In March, we held “Special to God: Meeting the Needs of Special Kids”. It was well
attended and received such positive feedback from the participants.
“I can’t stress how amazing this seminar was
for me. I have learnt more in this 5 hours than the last 7 years.
Amazing workshop!”
“I have a daughter with Autism. I have learnt so much today!
I feel better equipped to help my daughter and others like her.”
The interest and need has been so overwhelming that we have added a second seminar on August 11th,
9-3pm. Topics include: What is ADHD, SPD, Autism? Tips & Stategies, Q-A Session and MORE!

The “How To” training day was in early May. One of the topics covered was ways to manage children’s behaviour. It’s always
a welcome topic!
Some feedback from this session:
“As a new teacher this topic was beneficial and gives me
more confidence. The principles and etiquette, showing two
sides of God’s nature = balance. Thumbs up!”
“Great insights, definitely learnt a lot.”

“Whoop, whoop, amazing!”
“How-To” training
“Ministry to Young Children” was held in May. Inspiring, encouraging and
equipping the teachers of young children is so rewarding! Each year we hear
comments from these teachers that they have gone home feeling reaffirmed in their
ministry, often when they have felt like giving up!
Some feedback from participants this year:
“Thank you team! Wonderful job, transforming ordinary
people with a passion for kids to feel confident to teach the
MTYC training Word of God clearly and in a way children would understand.”

“I really enjoyed Lyn’s encouraging and motivating teaching,

being new to the role of Sunday School teacher for the
under 3's. I found the teaching very inspiring for me.”

“Great to re-inspire my work as a single leader when parents

may not see this importance.”
FBC training

Every year the NZ Training team goes to Faith Bible College for 3 days of training with its students. We were so
encouraged after our recent teaching time. It was so fantastic to walk into the classroom with less-than-enthusiastic students,
who had little interest in Children’s ministry, and then see those same students, at the end of the 3 days, fired up with new
vision, vigor and passion and seeing the NEED for children’s ministry! The entire class said these were their favourite lectures to
date. One student stated she would never look at children’s ministry the same. Another student from Korea was blessed by
the professionalism of our team and quality of our training.
