• New 3.0 CRD delivers class-leading torque and towing
• New exterior and interior design captures classic Jeep look and feel
Siena, Italy — Since its introduction in 1992, the Jeep® Grand Cherokee has
revolutionized the sport-utility market. Now leading the path carved by its
predecessors, the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee for 2005 is designed, engineered
and built to master every imaginable day-to-day driving condition, whether on-road
or off-road, in all kinds of weather.
“Jeep Grand Cherokee sets the benchmark with its on-road refinement, off-road
mastery and overall performance in key areas of customer satisfaction,” said
Thomas Hausch, Executive Director — International Sales and Marketing, Chrysler
Group. “Now with the new 3.0 CRD engine and 5.7-liter HEMI® with MDS, it
becomes an even more compelling package for customers in Europe and other
international markets.”
Jeep Grand Cherokee brings customers an all-new state-of-the-art 3.0 CRD engine
(3.0-liter V-6 common-rail turbo diesel), and for the first time ever, the 5.7-liter
The all-new 3.0 CRD engine is a “next-generation” power unit from DaimlerChrysler
producing class-leading levels of torque and towing, with efficient fuel economy.
With Bosch high-pressure fuel injection (1600+ bar), a variable geometry
turbocharger and four valves per cylinder, the new engine meets Euro 4 emissions
standards. Maximum power is 160 kW (218 hp DIN) and peak torque is 510 N•m
(376 lb.-ft.) from just 1600 rpm.
For the diesel engine, a kick-down switch is now added to the accelerator pedal.
This detent, reached before the full travel of the pedal, is intended to reduce
transmission kick-downs during normal driving but still allow for full pedal travel
when a quicker acceleration is wanted by the driver.
Jeep Grand Cherokee is also the first SUV to offer the Multi-Displacement System
(MDS). On the 5.7-liter HEMI engine, MDS deactivates half the cylinders during
cruising and light acceleration to increase fuel economy by up to 20 percent,
depending on driving conditions. Ninety percent of peak torque is available from
2400 to 5100 rpm for excellent performance while trailer towing or traveling off-
road, as well as during regular city and highway driving. A sophisticated Electronic
Throttle Control system tailors throttle response to pedal movement based on
operating conditions, and when cruise control is activated, maintains a more
consistent vehicle speed on rolling grades than was possible with the previous
mechanical throttle.
This control does not come at the expense of performance. The 5.7-liter HEMI
engine provides class-leading power and torque, at 240 kW (326 hp DIN) and
500 N•m (369 lb.-ft.). It also stands among the best in class for acceleration,
traveling 0 to 100 kph in just over seven seconds.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee also delivers class-leading towing capacity of 3500 kg
(7716 lbs.). Combined with the 1909 L (67.4 cu. ft.) of rear cargo volume, this allows
customers greater flexibility in usage for both business and pleasure.
Both transmissions feature Electronic Range Select driver interactive shift control for
the first time on Jeep Grand Cherokee. The shifter provides fully automatic shifting
in the “Drive” position, or the driver can manually select each gear sequentially by
moving the shift lever left or right from the “Drive” position. This gives the driver
control to precisely match any on-road or off-road driving requirement.
A proportionally longer hood and greater distance from the center of the front axle to
the base of the windshield visually communicate a more powerful image. Helping to
achieve a more athletic appearance is a flatter windshield and sleeker A-pillar design.
Jeep Grand Cherokee’s new interior is updated and inviting with a two-tone
instrument panel, door trim and new finishes. Seat contours are precise and
ergonomic with increased seat track travel. Comfortable head room plus
increased shoulder room, leg room and front hip room add a feeling of even
more spaciousness to the interior.
The dramatic and elegant instrument panel design offers a high degree of precision
and control. In the cargo area, features such as a reversible load floor panel and
numerous luggage tie-down points enhance versatility and storage. New premium
amenities — including GPS navigation radio, Boston Acoustics audio, UConnect™
hands-free communication system (as a dealer-installed accessory) and ParkSense™
rear park assist — will be available on the new Jeep Grand Cherokee.
All-new Suspension and Steering System Provides Confident Ride and Handling
An all-new independent front suspension provides the driver with a greater sense
of precision and control, more precise steering, and reduces head toss. Front
suspension wheel travel is increased by more than 10 percent over the previous
generation vehicle, and a tight turning diameter of 11.2 m (36.7 ft.) provides for
even more nimble handling. The new five-link rear suspension geometry, including
a track bar, also improves lateral stiffness to match that of the front suspension for
optimum handling.
Also standard for the first time on the Jeep Grand Cherokee is an Electronic
Stability Program, which aids the driver in maintaining vehicle directional stability
Jeep Grand Cherokee also features a new electronic rollover mitigation system that
anticipates critical situations for the vehicle that may lead to a rollover condition.
This system observes and monitors the driver input, vehicle roll attitude and lateral
force, while estimating the potential for a rollover situation. The electronic rollover
mitigation system reduces engine torque and applies a short burst of full braking to
the appropriate wheel to stabilize the vehicle.
Jeep Grand Cherokee’s new rack-and-pinion steering system imparts a more precise
steering feel to the driver than the previous recirculating ball system. Even with the
increase in wheelbase and track, Grand Cherokee’s nimbleness and tight turning
diameter are maintained with the new steering system.
Two new full-time four-wheel-drive systems are available on Jeep Grand Cherokee
in markets outside of North America. Quadra-Trac II® incorporates the new NV245
transfer case that provides full-time active four-wheel drive, which anticipates and
prevents wheel slip for optimum traction during a wide range of conditions. The
NV245 also includes electronic shift with a true low-range gear.
With Quadra-Drive II, Jeep Grand Cherokee is the only vehicle in the market that
offers an electronic engagement of torque biasing for the front axle, as well as the
rear. Therefore, the torque transfer is faster, and almost 100 percent of the torque
can be distributed to any of the four wheels — that capability is unique to Grand
Cherokee.
The new Jeep Grand Cherokee will start to reach international dealer showrooms
from April (petrol models) and from June (diesel models) of 2005.

Optional Features
When it came time to design the all-new Jeep® Grand Cherokee, keeping what
customers love about the previous generation vehicle, while incorporating
numerous improvements and breaking exciting new ground, was a delicate
balance for the design team.
“There is no doubt the Jeep brand is an American icon, so it’s important we stay
true to the Grand Cherokee’s design heritage, as well as the elements customers
tell us they love about the vehicle,” said Rick Aneiros, Vice President — Jeep/Truck
Design. “We’ve taken some of the traditional design cues and moved them forward
to capture a look and feel that’s refreshing and timeless. The result is nothing short
of an authentic modern Jeep.”
The Jeep Grand Cherokee’s new design offers an athletic and contemporary
appearance — longer, wider and lower in overall height than the model it replaces
— rendering it poised and ready for action. The new exterior design has a higher belt
line with deeper doors and shallower glass for a reduced glass-to-body proportion.
The wider track pushes the wheels out to the body edges, giving Grand Cherokee a
secure appearance of being planted on the road.
Signature features of the vehicle remain, such as the famous seven-slot grille
that boldly dominates the front view and the traditional trapezoidal wheel arches.
“The challenge with a new Jeep design is to encapsulate that limitless capability
and attitude with an appearance that is fresh, fitting and timeless,” said John
Sgalia, Director — Jeep Interior and Exterior Design. “Additionally, we know there
are certain elements that can’t change on a Jeep because our customer base is
very knowledgeable and has very specific demands.”
The shape of the body sides have been thoughtfully designed to protect the flanks
of the vehicle from potential road debris thrown off the tires. The heavy side
cladding used on the previous model is replaced with a more efficient body-side
shape and moldings that are incorporated into the design. The doors are skinned
with bake-hardened steel for enhanced impact resistance, and the body-side
moldings have the Grand Cherokee name integrated for a high quality look and feel.
Seen in profile, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee has a proportionately longer hood,
and the front wheels are moved forward, further from the base of the windshield,
placing more emphasis on the engine bay. The more steeply sloping A-pillars, longer
hood and higher body-to-glass ratio combine to visually communicate an even more
powerful image.
At the rear, larger taillamps feature red and clear lenses for a look that presents a
premium feel without being overstated. Brand and model badges are now injection-
molded and chrome-plated to communicate a richness and sense of precision.
The new Jeep Grand Cherokee takes capability and refinement to new levels,
proving there is no reason why a hugely capable off-road vehicle cannot also be
immensely comfortable and polished. A new and inviting interior awaits occupants
with a rich two-tone, dark upper and lighter lower color scheme, new instrument
panel treatment, new door trims and up-market interior finishes.
The seats are beautifully crafted with contours that are precise, firm and
ergonomic, featuring a new robust structure. They are purpose-built and designed
for long-distance comfort with trim styles different for each model. The Laredo
features cloth and optional leather, while the Limited seating is in two-tone leather
with perforated leather seat inserts. Front seat travel is increased by 50 mm
(1.97 in.), and 54 mm (2.13 in.) of vertical adjustment is available. At the back,
the rear seat cushion is mounted 17 mm (0.67 in.) higher than the front seats
to provide greater visibility for rear passengers.
The dramatic and elegant instrument panel design offers a high degree of precision
in its fit, finish and operation. The instrument panel features a dark upper color and
lighter lower color. Multiple bins have been added for additional storage.
“Quality isn’t just the workings of the interior but the perception the customer feels
when he or she is in the vehicle,” said Clyde Ney, Design Manager and the new
Jeep Grand Cherokee’s interior designer. “The touch points, the sound the switches
make, the fit and finish, the textures and lighter colors are all vital to a quality
experience because that’s where the occupants literally live while traveling.”
A new precise four-gauge instrument cluster with LED illumination features black
gauges with white graphics and red pointers for reading ease in all conditions.
On the Limited model, the gauges are surrounded by chrome accent rings.
Beneath the athletic exterior of the all-new Jeep® Grand Cherokee lies a host of
engineering innovations and improvements to deliver significant customer benefits.
An all-new 3.0-liter common-rail turbo diesel (CRD) engine leads the powertrain
lineup, joining the 5.7-liter HEMI® and 4.7-liter petrol powerplants plus two five-
speed automatic transmissions. This wide range of customer choices has been
developed to provide smooth performance and a premium driving experience
whether on-road or off-road.
The compact and lightweight 3.0 CRD engine is a “next-generation” power unit
producing class-leading levels of torque and towing. Based on the latest Mercedes-
Benz technology, this all-new diesel engine offers outstanding performance along
with the refinement and efficiency international buyers are looking for.
The concept of diesel driving pleasure reaches a new level for Jeep with the new
CRD engine. As the successor to the five-cylinder in-line 2.7 CRD engine, it offers
a 33-percent increase in power and 28-percent increase in torque, ensuring faster
acceleration, brisk intermediate sprints and a higher top speed.
The choice of materials, design, fuel injection and engine management system
reflect the state of the art. Unlike many other diesel engines in this displacement
and output class, the 3.0 CRD features an aluminum crankcase with cast-in grey iron
cylinder liners, which make a major contribution to weight reduction. As a result, the
new V-6 weighs a total of only approximately 208 kg (459 lbs., according to DIN).
In addition, for the diesel engine, a kick-down switch is now added to the
accelerator pedal. This detent, reached before the full travel of the pedal, is
intended to reduce transmission kick-downs during normal driving but still allow
for full pedal travel when a quicker acceleration is wanted by the driver.
The new Jeep Grand Cherokee offers customers the option of two gasoline engines:
the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine, available for the first time on a Jeep vehicle, and the
proven 4.7-liter PowerTech™ V-8.
Jeep Grand Cherokee is the first SUV to offer the Multi-Displacement System
(MDS). On the 5.7-liter HEMI engine, MDS deactivates half the cylinders during
cruising and light acceleration to increase fuel economy by up to 20 percent,
depending on driving conditions. The transition from eight cylinders to four is
completed in 40 milliseconds (0.040 seconds) without any driver intervention
needed and is transparent to the driver and passengers.
Ninety percent of peak torque is available from 2400 to 5100 rpm for excellent
performance while trailer towing or traveling off-road, as well as during regular
This control does not come at the expense of performance. The 5.7-liter HEMI
engine provides class-leading power and torque, at 240 kW (326 hp DIN) and
500 N•m (369 lb.-ft.). It also stands among the best in class for acceleration
(0-100 kph in just over seven seconds).
The 4.7-liter V-8 engine features numerous improvements and refinements for its
latest application in the new Jeep Grand Cherokee. Maximum power is rated at
170 kW (231 hp DIN) at 4500 rpm, and maximum torque is 410 N•m (302 lb.-ft.)
at 3600 rpm.
Both transmissions feature Electronic Range Select driver interactive shift control
for the first time on Jeep Grand Cherokee. The shifter provides fully automatic
shifting in the “Drive” position, or the driver can manually select each gear
sequentially by moving the shift lever left or right from the “Drive” position.
This gives the driver the control to precisely match any on-road or off-road
driving requirement.
With two all-new 4x4 systems that combine the legendary Jeep® off-road capability
with refined on-road driving manners, the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee sets a new
benchmark in the SUV market. The two unique full-time 4x4 systems offer customers
the opportunity to choose the system which best suits their driving needs.
“The legendary reputation of the Jeep Grand Cherokee is based on its 4x4
systems,” said Craig Love, Vice President — Rear Wheel Drive Product Team and
Core Team Leader. “The Jeep engineering team made significant strides to ensure
that the new Jeep Grand Cherokee not only maintained its off-road reputation, but
also improved its on-road driving manners.”
Quadra-Trac II®
The new Quadra-Trac II® 4x4 system for the Jeep Grand Cherokee gives customers
the benefit of the NV245 active transfer case and the Brake Traction Control
System (BTCS).
The transfer case is set up to split torque 48-percent front and 52-percent rear
in dry, good traction conditions and varies automatically depending on road
conditions. It takes input from a variety of sensors to determine tire slip at the
earliest possible moment and take corrective action. The system also uses Throttle
Quadra-Trac II features an electronic shift mechanism for ease of use. The transfer
case includes a neutral position, and the 4-Low low-range gear ratio is 2.72 to
1. This transfer case is the same one used in the new Quadra-Drive II® system.
Quadra-Trac II is standard on Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo models with the
4.7-liter V-8 engine.
Quadra-Drive II®
The Quadra-Drive II 4x4 system offers customers the ultimate in off-road capability.
It combines the NV245 full-time transfer case with three Electronic Limited Slip
Differentials (ELSD) — front, center and rear — for best-in-class tractive performance.
The system instantly detects tire slip and smoothly distributes engine torque to the
tires with traction. In some cases, the vehicle will even anticipate low traction and
adjust to proactively limit or eliminate tire slip.
The heart of the system is the NV245 active transfer case. This transfer case
includes a center differential coupled with an electronically controlled clutch
pack, varying it from a completely open state to completely locked — and infinite
possibilities in between. The 4-Low low-range gear ratio is 2.72 to 1.
The all-new suspension for the Jeep Grand Cherokee is designed to improve the on-
road ride and handling without compromising off-road performance. The immensely
strong body shell — torsional stiffness is increased by 60 percent — provides a
high-rigidity stable base on which to mount the new suspension components, while
the increased wheelbase, up by 90 mm (3.5 in), and the wider track, up 64 mm
(2.5 in), give the Grand Cherokee an enhanced ride and greater stability.
The short- and long-arm, double-wishbone front suspension provides more lateral
response and stiffness than a solid-axle system. This delivers a greater feeling of
steering precision and control to the driver, enhancing the benefits of the new rack-
and-pinion steering system. The new suspension design reduces unsprung weight
by 45.5 kg (100 lbs.) and has a total wheel travel of 225 mm (up 29 mm) for much
improved ride quality.
The rear live axle and five-link suspension, with separate shock absorbers and
coil springs, features wide-based control arms for control of axle wind-up and
increased lateral stiffness for compatible handling characteristics with the new
front suspension.
Chrysler Group has enhanced the new Jeep® Grand Cherokee’s vehicle
communication and entertainment options through practical, premium
applications, which can be experienced at the touch of a button.
With the new GPS navigation radio option for the Jeep Grand Cherokee in Europe,
hard-to-fold paper maps may be tossed to the side. Designed with a large,
easy-to-read screen, voice guidance and a number of unique options, the DVD-
based navigation system has features that will appeal to both drivers and music
enthusiasts alike.
The navigation radio system is housed in the center of the vehicle’s dashboard,
conveniently located for operation by either front seat occupant. This system
features a large 14.7 cm (5.8-in.) full-color display, AM/FM stereo, six-disc CD
system that can play MP3 audio files, and a navigation system, all in one unit.
An eight-way joystick allows users to scroll through navigation menus and icons
quickly and effortlessly.
The navigation system receives its GPS signals from up to eight satellites to
display the position and direction of the vehicle. When a destination is entered,
the system uses DVD data to quickly calculate a route. The system then guides the
user through the drive route providing voice prompts, kilometer by kilometer, turn
The navigation system features a single DVD-ROM based NAVTECH database. This
solution eliminates the need to handle and store multiple discs required in CD-
based solutions. In addition, route calculations are made within 10 seconds with
Alpine Electronics’ proprietary software. This is crucial when a driver misses a turn
and needs a re-route.
Point of interest: select a destination from a list of locations and public places that
are grouped by category.
Address: locate address by street name, city name and country.
Personal address book: stores up to 100 personal locations and phone numbers,
recalls an address from the address book for use as a destination.
Recent destination: choose a destination from your 10 most recent trips.
Home designation: recall a saved address as your destination.
The system requires a Bluetooth equipped telephone and can recognize six
languages: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch.
The Boston Acoustics sound system has a 276-watt amplifier and six speakers
— two 8.9 cm (3.5 in.) mid-to-high frequency units in the instrument panel, two
15.2 x 22.9 cm (6 x 9 in.) woofers in the front doors and two similar size full-range
units in the side walls of the load area.
The amplifier features Digital Signal Processing for a clean sound with minimal
distortion. Boston Acoustics sound performance is characterized by a smooth
octave-to-octave tonal balance with natural frequency response and a distortion-
free, uncolored presentation that is faithful to the artist’s original recording.
Practical innovation has been applied to the all-new Jeep® Grand Cherokee through
integrated safety and security features which were designed into the vehicle from
the start.
Systems such as the Electronic Limited Slip Differentials of the Quadra-Drive II®
system and Electronic Stability Program contribute to the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s
exceptional vehicle dynamics. Systems like advanced multi-stage front and available
side curtain air bags, tire pressure monitoring and ParkSense™ rear park assist offer
the latest innovations in occupant protection, safety and security on the road.
Thanks to this diligent effort, the new Jeep Grand Cherokee in the U.S. received
the government’s highest ratings for frontal and side-impact crash protection (five
stars) in testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
To optimize overall driving performance, the Jeep Grand Cherokee offers many
accident avoidance systems. The anti-lock brake system (ABS) with emergency brake
assist reduces brake pressure at the wheels and prohibits wheel lock during a braking
event. The system monitors the rotation and wheel slip of each wheel. Brake pressure
is applied and modulated to achieve optimal performance for braking and steerability
under all surface conditions including dry, wet, snow and ice covered pavement.
During acceleration, the traction control system (TCS) is activated to avoid excessive
wheel slip. This system observes and monitors each wheel and can estimate
the brake pressure needed to control the wheel or wheels. All-speed TCS uses
Electronic Throttle Control to increase the operating speed range by estimating
the engine torque reduction needed to control the wheel or wheels in addition to
the brake engagement.
The vehicle also features the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) as standard. ESP
observes and monitors the overall vehicle behavior, in addition to each wheel, under
all driving situations and conditions. The system compares the intended course
given by the driver input (steering angle) with the measured behavior of the vehicle.
In case of deviations or instability of the vehicle, ESP engages through a reduction
of the engine torque and active brake pressure engagement on one or more wheels.
Jeep Grand Cherokee also features a new electronic rollover mitigation system that
anticipates critical situations for the vehicle that may lead to a rollover condition.
A tire pressure monitoring system is standard on all Jeep Grand Cherokee models.
The system includes pressure sensor modules that are integrated with the valve
stems of all four road wheels, as well as the spare tire. Each module sends
continuous radio frequency signals to a receiver and informs occupants when
the pressure is too low. The system displays tire pressure through the Electronic
Vehicle Information Center.
The 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee was the first SUV to be equipped with a driver’s
side front air bag. The new Jeep Grand Cherokee continues to be equipped with the
latest passive safety technology, such as advanced multi-stage front air bags and
available side-curtain air bags.
Front seat belts are equipped with belt pretensioners and constant force
retractors. Pretensioners tighten the seat belt to help keep the occupant in place,
while constant force retractors balance the load on the upper body, reducing
injuries from excessive seat belt forces. The driver’s side is also equipped with
BeltAlert® — an enhanced seat belt reminder system that periodically activates a
chime and illuminates a light in the instrument panel to remind the driver to buckle
up. Head restraints are standard in every seating position.
The Jeep® Grand Cherokee uses state-of-the-art technology to produce the highest
vehicle quality in one of the brand’s most durable forms. It blends past and future by
evolving its Jeep heritage into a sophisticated and contemporary execution of an icon.
“Quality is the lifeblood of any vehicle and company, but when that vehicle is a Jeep,
all bars are raised,” said Stephen Walukas, Vice President — Corporate Quality.
“Jeep owners know that quality has to be a priority if they are going to use their
vehicle like no other sport-utility vehicle in the world.”
The new Jeep Grand Cherokee was designed and engineered under the Chrysler
Development System (CDS), the comprehensive, coordinated and disciplined
product creation process that improves quality and speed-to-market while reducing
costs and encouraging practical innovation in new products. The CDS system also
allows the Chrysler Group to develop vehicles that successfully meet the needs of
international markets.
The vehicle also benefited from the full-size Aero-Acoustic Wind Tunnel at the
company’s Technology Center, which was completed in the summer of 2002,
along with environmental simulators on site. Engineers had the opportunity to test
early, full-size clay models more than 700 times to analyze various configurations
of the design to make aerodynamic changes, as well as to validate cooling and
wind noise goals.
For example, dynamic sealing (similar to weather strips) was strategically placed
throughout the vehicle as a result of lessons learned during testing. Exact
placement of the sealing included additional cut line coverage to decrease wind
noise, lower coverage to decrease road noise, and upper auxiliary seals to improve
water and wind management. In addition, an increased use of cavity foam and
environmentally friendly water-borne sound dampening were applied in the body
and paint sealing process during manufacturing.
In fact, hundreds of hours were spent in test labs to minimize noise, vibration and
harshness (NVH). In the area of wind noise, testing revealed many opportunities
to assist in the design, NVH and engineering process. This included the ultimate
shaping of exterior mirrors, A-pillar geometry, the thickness of the side glass and
seals around the door glass and liftgate.
In addition to wind noise reductions, the team used extensive testing and data
to refine the new Jeep Grand Cherokee’s powertrain, providing both hardware
refinements and acoustic treatments. In particular, control of critical axle
assemblies – such as ring and pinion mesh profiles that were selected for minimum
gear noise – were key factors in NVH reductions. Also, individual component and
system balancing, as well as tightened tolerances on the rear drive shafts, were
elements that were implemented early in the vehicle’s development.
During development, Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles underwent extreme body shell
torsion and suspension articulation tests derived from those tests (such as “AK3”)
Four separate “Lap of America” trips were initiated during development phases
to validate all aspects of vehicle performance. Trips from Detroit to all areas of
the United States were undertaken to ensure the function of all systems under all
ranges of customer use, including trailer towing and altitude testing.
Validation trips worldwide were also conducted over the broadest range of roads
and temperature variations, from -41 degrees Fahrenheit to 122 degrees Fahrenheit
in such locations and conditions as:
All of these elements are proof that not only is there “one” Jeep, but one type of
Jeep testing when it comes to quality: Extreme.
