Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

 Express the type of person they would like to grow into
 Create oral and pictorial work based on the story

Teacher’s Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for students at educational risk:

 PowerPoint  Ensure that students get each aspect of their work
 Pictures of “little things” that have “grown” done by giving them a time limit to complete the
 Body templates drawing and get onto the video.

 Give some students the option of drawing

themselves onto a template.

LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson)

Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement:
All students created a drawing of themselves and uploaded a video about the person they wanted to grow into when
they grow up. Some students needed some prompting to think about what job they might like to do, what personality
traits they hope to develop, what good they want to do in the world. Overall, the objectives were met as students
could compare themselves to the tiny mustard seed and how it grows into a giant tree, with their own lives.

Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:

I feel very comfortable teaching Religion lessons, particularly when there is an important underlying message for the
children to take away. I tried to relate the story of the mustard seed and the pictures of the sequoia seed/tree to the
students by leading a discussion about how we start off as babies and can turn into people that can potentially
change the world. They were quite engaged in discussion and liked the comparison. I still need to work on getting the
calling out under control, but I think that I could control Ellie’s calling out today by being a bit firmer with her. Towards

1
the end we ran out of time to sit down and wrap up our discussion, so time management is something that I will
continue to work at aswell.

Resources/References
Time Motivation and Introduction:
1:50pm  Students will begin seated on the mat at the front of the classroom.

 The WALT is “recognise how from little things, big things grow”.
Explain that as part of our learning about creation, we are going to
look at some things that started off small but grew much bigger in
time.

 Before showing the students the story of the mustard seed, show
them a picture of the sequoia seed.
Ask students, “Do you know what this is a picture of?”
Next show them a picture of the sequoia tree. PowerPoint with
“Would you believe me if I told you that this giant tree emerged from pictures
this tiny seed?”
Tell students that this is just one example of how big things can come
about from a tiny little thing! Also explain that from this tiny seed, this
giant tree will provide shade, shelter and nourishment for many
people.

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

 Ask students if anyone has heard of the story about God’s kingdom
and the mustard seed. Show them the video:

Mustard seed video
 In this lesson we are going to look at how each and every one of us loaded
will grow as we get older and the choices we make will decide what
kind of person we become! Just as the little mustard seed may seem
little and insignificant, you might feel as though you cannot make a
difference in the world because you are just one person. But like the
tree it grows into you can do great things!

 Explain that today we are going to decide and envision what kind of Religion books
2pm person we would like to grow into. Ask students what kind of person
they would like to be. Take notes on the board.

- First, each student will draw a picture of themselves into their

Religion book. They can simply draw a picture of themselves now
or with different aspects that describe the person they want to be

- Then they will use ChatterPix to use their words to describe the iPads
person they would like to grow into.

- An example: “When I grow up I would like to be a kind person to

all other people, animals and creatures on Earth. I would like to

2
grow into someone who helps people feel better and is always
smiling.”

 Send first 5 students off to get iPads while handing out the Religion
books.

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

2:25pm  Call students back to the mat at 2:25pm and show two or three videos
on the TV (airplay).

 Tell students that the story that we focused on in today’s lesson is the
theme of the Gospel this weekend. If they would like to show
everyone what they know or learn more about this, they should go to
Church and hear more!

 Wrap up the lesson by putting this into perspective for students. Tell
them that they might think they cannot make a difference because
they are just one person, but if everyone in the class said that, that is
already 22 people trying to make a difference.

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

2:30pm
 Students need to put away their religion books and iPads. Girls can
put away their iPads while boys put their religion books away – and
vice versa.

Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?)
