The Referee
I. MATCH
Background
Final days of groupstage in match schedule come out. It is very obvious that each of
related teams in encounter has possibility to qualify to QF. That makes the match critical
for referee team to overcome without major problems. In addition to qualification
opportunity, match’s itself has imposed some critical foul and card situations which were
hard to handle and decide. Referee of the match should have both considered control
requirements and fluid game characteristics. He set an acceptable level of foul detection.
The environmental aspects were challenging for teams and referee team as well. Heavy
raining affected control of the ball negatively. Hence, sliding tackles mostly required some
cautions. Ref team tried to endure such a kind of balance.
II. CONTROL
Comment
There were too many small interactions between players. In first half, referee was very
careful with positions and cautions. However, in second half, required cards didn’t come
out correctly. He talked to players which had a positive effect. However, mostly stand far,
and ignored cards. That has brought tension to players. Referee should have been more
precise, and confident. He tried to be invisible which didn’t help to game flow positively.
III. DECISIONS
Application of the Laws of the Game – Comment (advice: always refer to aspects
like card management, infringement detection, the application of the advantage
rule, holding in the penalty area after set pieces, simulation and lay extra ordinary
high emphasis on match influencing or even decisive decisions)
See Calls by Minutes: Good, and bad is contained. Some visible faults are emphasized..

Baros(#15) and Perquis (#15) unnecessarily discuss foul, they have these
small interactions all match long. Referee could have urged players
Min 5 Foul given to POL, correct.
Min 8 No penalty for handball in box, correct, just a hit.
An advantage is given to offside position. I am not content with this approach.
Min 11
Offside is correct, but should be kicked-off
First YC to Limberski(#8), foul obvious, for setting game standards in a line,
Min 12
that’s a totally correct card
Min 16 A weird foul is given in midfield duel, seems wrong
Min 19 Correct foul whistle, however an indirect free-kick could be given.
Another foul to Baros, YC is given to Murawski. Although, card seems
Min 23 justified, Baros lets himself so easily down. I understand the card, but could
be avoided. Referee stands a little bit far to position
Min29 A not an easy corner kick decision, seems correct
Min 30 Correct whistle, no YC is a proper decision. There intentional tackle
A very harsh foul whistle, seems wrong, referee stands in midfield, misses
Min 34
characteristic of duel on line, easily whistled
Min 36,40 Good go-on decisions, in critical goal attempts
Referee Thomson spots goal-kick, AR urges to change decision. A clearer
Min 42
communication is needed there
Second half, teams start with an eager, correct YC to Polanski (#7), good go-
Min 48
on decision before this goal attempt.
An obvious YC is missed, right in front of referee. Wasilewski (#13) uses his
Min 52 both leg without ball aim as tackle. Obvious YC missed. Player gets his YC at
Min 60…
Min 57 A remarkable warning to #18, good clearance
Min 58, In minutes, 2 YCs could be given to Dudkla for his elbow. Min 59 is more
59 required as YC.
Min 60 A correct whistle and YC for Wasilewski (#13)
Another harsh foul whistle, AR has urged, however call is understandable to
Min 61
calm down players, more tactical
Min 66,67 Correct foul whistles
Referee stands far way from positions, another harsh tackle that may require
Min 72
a card. Trying to be lenient in these parts, but nothing to contribute to match
Correct foul whistle, good no card policy. But, referee doesn’t obvious show
Min 76
decisions. A more presence is needed.
A correct foul is whistled for Poland. Kick is made, Baros extends his arm to
enlarge his body and ball hits his arm, and there is enough distance to
prevent that hit. Obviously an intentional arm-based-prevention. But, ball is
Min 86
accelerating with very high speed. Most probably, Thomson didn’t notice. My
other side says that it is not that much. Could be ignored. I want to trust to
referee in this situation. And, don’t want to see the position
Riots between players, 2 YCs have been issued. UEFA policy is obvious;
Min 88
issue the card to ones who initiated. Correct cautions
Min 90 A YC to (#15), correct and needed.
Min Fouls, fouls and fouls….. A very tiring and unnecessary game from now on,
92,93,93 all whistles are correct
I didn’t admire the position where he finished the match. Could have waited
Min 90+4
for final cross.

Minute Situation and Assessment
Min 7 Good no offside decision before goal attempt of POL
Min 69 Wrong throw-in decision.
Critical offside flag, however lack of replay gives no information for exact
Min 75 results. Whenever, screen is obtained, it is a tight onside for Baros seemingly.
AR has missed
Another critical flag as onside. Again no replay is issued. Screenshots prove
Min 78
that flag is correct as move-on.
