SARIMANOK TENT CITY – SITE 1

On the transfer of IDPs from Iligan evacuation centers, through the efforts of the
City Government of Marawi and the Department of Social Welfare and Development,
almost 200 displaced families sheltered in four evacuation centers in Iligan City have now
been relocated to the two sites of Sarimanok Tent City in Bubuan, Marawi City. Site 1 are
mostly IDPs from Sta. Elena Gym and Maria Christina Gym.
During a casual conversation with the IDPs from Site 1, ‘Soraya’, one of the
occupants of the tents, opened up that “We cannot pray in this month of Ramadhan because
we do not have enough Mukna (Prayer dress). We have to take turns borrowing only two
from Ma’am Baor. Isha’a (the night prayer) will catch up to us before we can even finish
Maghrib (the sunset prayer).”
To look further into this problem, I visited the first row of tents in Sarimanok Tent
City – Site 1, checked their DAFAC (Disaster Assistance Family Card) to identify the
female members of their household. Almost all of them attested for Soraya’s words to be
true. I took pictures of their DAFAC and made a list of the all the women from first row,
Site 1.
Laylatul Qadr is the crowning glory of the holy month of Ramadhaan, and it occurs
in one of the last ten nights of Ramadan, i.e. 2lst, 23rd, 25th 27th or 29th night. After a
month-long of fasting and extensive training session, a celebration called Eid Al-adha will
take place, the Festival/Holiday of Breaking Fast. It is a celebration which lasts 3 days and
celebrates the successful completion of Ramadan and the newly renewed spiritual
cleansing and connection. I hope the women from Sarimanok Tent City Site 1 can perform
Laylatul Qadr or celebrate Eid al-adha comfortably in their new prayer garments despite
their unfortunate circumstances.
