Jealous Charged Public Universities & Community Colleges Over

$85,000 In Speaking Fees Amid Tuition Hikes & University Budget

Crises
In honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Jealous charged $35,000 in speaking fees to public universities.
On January 16, 2017, Jealous spoke at Eastern Michigan University’s Annual MLK Day Celebration for a
whopping $20,000 – less than six months after the university raised its tuition by 4.1 percent. In the contract
between the university and Jealous’ speakers bureau, Keppler Speakers, Keppler abridged the university’s
proposal for Jealous to give 15 minutes of remarks, cutting his remarks to only 10 minutes. About a month later,
Jealous spoke at Bloomsburg University’s Annual MLK Commemorative Celebration. His itinerary included a 30-
minute VIP meet and greet and a one-hour presentation, and, notably, car rides provided by a limousine service
that drove him from his hotel to the university and back.

In February 2016, Northern Virginia Community College hosted a discussion with Jealous in honor of Black
History Month, which was also publicized in the Washington Post as an event for his new book. NOVA paid $3,600
for Jealous’ speaking engagement. In February 2017, Jealous held a book signing after giving a lecture at the
University of Massachusetts’ Black History Month event, from which he and his speakers bureau pocketed $10,000.
UMass also spent $73.50 on seven of Jealous’ new book for him to sign. Just a few months before Jealous’ lecture,
it was reported that UMass was undergoing a “budget crisis,” with a $26 million shortfall that prompted the
chancellor to call for major spending cuts and furlough for teachers and employees. Records obtained from
UMass indicate that Jealous’ speaking fees were paid with general operating funds from the Chancellor’s Project
Account. General operating funds have been known to include “tuition and mandatory student fees.”

Grand Rapids Community College paid $15,000 for Jealous to speak at its lecture series in February 2016. During
the same month that Jealous and Keppler Speakers received their $15,000 check, the college approved a 2.8
percent tuition increase. What’s worse – a few months after GRCC signed the contract for Jealous’ speaking
engagement, the college projected an 11.7 percent enrollment decline, which was “expected to cost the college $1.5
million in lost tuition revenue.” In 2014, Jealous profited from the Pennsylvania higher education system, which
was “already squeezed financially.” In one instance, Kutztown University paid $15,000 for Jealous’ speaking
engagements. Jealous was also provided with car rides by International Limousine, which drove him six hours
roundtrip. Just months before Kutztown signed the $15,000 agreement, fall enrollment among state-owned
universities was reportedly down for the third consecutive year in 2013, with Kutztown’s enrollment down by 11
percent since 2010. That same year, there had been a $50 million budget shortfall, and an 18 percent cut in the
state higher education system’s appropriation. Kutztown University said that university funds were not used to pay
for Jealous’ speaking event. They stated that an “independent non-profit affiliate of KU” called Kutztown
University Student Services was the “contract holder and funding source for this event.” According to Kutztown
University Student Services’ website, KUSSI’s services were funded by “student activity fees and surplus from
operations.”

In April 2014, Keppler Speakers invoiced Virginia State University $7,000 for Jealous to be the keynote speaker for
the school’s honors convocation. Car service provided by International Limousine was scheduled to drive Jealous
to the event from his private residence and then back, which was estimated as a six-hour roundtrip. During
California State University, Monterey Bay’s 2016 commencement ceremony, Jealous made a speech and received
an honorary doctorate. About two weeks before the ceremony, Angela Newman, the Executive Administrator for
Kapor Capital, a company that employs Jealous as a senior partner, asked the university to provide reimbursement
for Jealous and his kids’ flights to and from the ceremony. CSUMB agreed, reimbursing almost $2,300 in
roundtrip flights. Jealous and his daughter even had reserved seats on Southwest Airlines’ Business Select, which,
according to Southwest’s online flight booking function, could reach hundreds of dollars above the price for a
normal seat.
