Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Understanding Cell Reproduction

Content Area: Biology
Grade Level(s): 9-12
Content Standard Addressed: SB1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to analyze the nature of
the relationships between structures and functions in living cells. b. Develop and use models to explain the
role of cellular reproduction (including binary fission, mitosis, and meiosis) in maintaining genetic continuity.

Technology Standard Addressed: ISTE-S 6 Creative Communicator- Students communicate clearly and
express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital
media appropriate to their goals.

Selected Technology Tool: PowerPoint

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

UDL principles can be incorporated by having the students provide a transcript of their PowerPoint and
incorporate visual aids. A step-by-step guide to creating a narrated PowerPoint should be made available for
use. This hand-out should be in Spanish as well as English if any ESOL students are in the class. A rubric that
provides a clear outline of what is expected should also be provided to each student.

Lesson idea implementation:

In this class the students are beginning to create their narrated PowerPoint presentations using content
studied in the previous classes. The project will be introduced at the beginning of class with the teacher
handing out the rubrics, overview of the assignment, and providing a tutorial on the creation of the final
product along with several examples of exemplary projects. The students will be placed in groups of 3 and
assigned a topic- Mitosis, Binary fission, or Meiosis. They will use their textbook and other online resources to
guide them as they develop the PowerPoint and decide which points need to be highlighted and explained in
deeper detail than others, being sure to analyze their topics’ role in maintaining genetic continuity. While the
students work in their groups to complete the project the teacher will circle the room answering individual
questions on the content or productivity tool and will address any serious issues with the class as a whole.
The students will be given this class period as well as part of the next to complete this presentation.
The narrated PowerPoint presentation is used to inform learning as the students are required to truly
understand and analyze the relevance of the material in order to create a presentation that is clear, concise,
and accurate on their assigned topic. Differentiation is accounted for in allowing the students to include
additional video, animations, etc. according to their creativity levels in the creation of their presentation.
Higher learning levels are achieved as the students create an original product that will be presented to their
peers when it is completed. The lesson for the day will be concluded with an exit ticket that will evaluate
student understanding of their assigned topic as well as the correlation between each of the processes of
cellular reproduction. Any misunderstandings presented from this exit ticket will be addressed in the

following class period. Teacher feedback will also occur during class as the teacher circles the room and
evaluates each groups progress.

Reflective Practice:
In order to create a concise, accurate, narrated PowerPoint that is their own original product, the students
are required to develop a deeper understanding of the material. It also increases student engagement as they
interact with their group and strive to create a product that is uniquely their own within the context of their
group presentation. To further extend the lesson, when the presentations are completed each student will
watch the two other presentations and fill out an evaluation sheet, perhaps using a table in Excel.
