Local wedding
Brook Meadow Hotel, Childer Thornton,
was the venue for the recent wedding of
Jane Caroline Metcalfe and David Stephen
Johnson, who live in Ledsham Park, Little
Sutton. The bride is originally from Liverpool
and the groom is a doctor from Great Sutton.
Entertainment was provided by the wedding
singer Matt Johnson (former “One true
voice” group member) and the happy couple
honeymooned in Lake Maggoire Italy.

Festival Park has recently
benefited from upgraded
facilities under the national
Playbuilder scheme - aimed
at providing high quality, safe
play areas for young people.
Council staff worked with local
children aged between eight
and thirteen, who lived close to
the play area, to help choose
the play equipment that suited
their needs.

Holiday club success
A free wide range of activities have
been taking place for toddlers to 16
year olds at Brookside Holiday Club in
Ellesmere Port – partly paid for by Sutton
and Manor Councillors.
Throughout the summer holidays on a
Monday and Wednesday between 10am
and 2pm the club was open, run by
parents whose children attend Brookside
Primary School in Rostherne Avenue,
Great Sutton.
The venture had the backing of the school
which secured around roughly half of the
funding and events took place both inside
the building and in the school grounds.
Cheshire West and Chester Councillors
Kimberley Anderson, Bob Crompton and
Paul Donavon donated together in total
£1,000 from their own Members’ Budget
Fund.
Said School Governor Councillor
Donovan: “We thought this was a really
worthwhile venture and I am very pleased
that it has been a great success enjoyed

“The request initially came from the
luncheon club which is held at the
school.”
Added Councillor Anderson: “There has
been a wide range of things for all ages.
For the young people there was street

The club was organised by Sarah Astbury
and Helen Patrick, parents of children at
the school. Helen said: “It went absolutely
brilliantly and I would like to thank the
Councillors for their support.
“Everything was free except for the
donation to buy party food for our final
day. Everyone had a fantastic time.”

achievement on the Wikid
Summer scheme.
The 53 strong group
took part in a four week
structured referral
programme giving young
people the opportunity
to take part in sports and
arts related activity at local
leisure venues, parks and
open spaces.

for the awards which were
presented by Sutton and
Manor Councillor Bob

Whitby Park has been
awarded national Green
Flag status. This is the
second year that the park
has received this award.
The Green Flag Award
is organised by the Keep
Britain Tidy consortium and
is the benchmark national
standard for parks and
green spaces in England
and Wales.
The scheme, which has
been running for 14 years,
is designed to encourage
high environmental
standards and excellence
for recreational green
spaces. In 2009/2010, a
record number of awards
were made, with over 1000

Nordic walking is a
real calorie burner
Local residents are invited to take part
in a new activity gathering popularity and
pace – Nordic Walking.
Nordic Walking differs from ordinary
walking in that participants carry poles
similar to those used in snow. The activity
burns up to 46 per cent more calories per
session because of the additional upper
body muscle usage.
It can also help to relieve and improve
neck, back and joint pain by improving
posture and reducing pressure on joints.

“Nordic Walking is a new and interesting
low-impact and healthy activity which
I went to a fight the other night, and an ice hockey game broke out - Rodney Dangerfield
allows people of all ages to take part.

Park and Rivacre Valley during October.
Monthly Nordic Walks take place at
Rivacre Valley and the Wirral Way

Gardening in October

O
ctober is a good month to move existing plants or plant out new plants
as the soil will still be warm from summer and moist which will enable
plants to settle in before winter.
Flowering perennials such as Phlox, perennial
Geraniums, Yellow Loosestrife Lysimachia punctata
or its relative the Chinese Loosestrife Lysimachia
clethroides, with wonderful white wavy cone shaped
flowers, all spread and can be dug up, split and
replanted. Phlox in particular, can become congested
and tend not to flower well after a few years. Splitting
them and replanting in enriched soil will rejuvenate
them.

Shrubs can be moved now so if you have a shrub that

is in the wrong place, give it a can of water an hour or
so before moving, dig it up, being careful to dig up all
its root ball. When replanting, dig a hole larger than the
root ball, ensure that the soil is loosened all around the
planting hole so that the roots will be able to grow out
into the surrounding soil. Mix some well rotted manure
or planting compost in the soil and if the soil is dry, add
a watering can of water to the base of the hole. Backfill
with soil, firming in with your fingers (not your boot!),
and add another can of water.

Roses that are tall can be cut back before winter

although the main pruning is usually in March. This will
prevent the plant from being rocked in high winds. If
the leaves are diseased from blackspot and falling from
the rose, remove them as the spores can remain in the
ground to re-infect next season.

Plant bulbs in October, such as the tiny Iris reticulata,

daffodil and tulip bulbs, for flowering next year. Also try
hyacinths in pots outside as they will survive outdoors.
In my garden a previous owner planted them out in
the borders where they come up each year. I pick the
blooms to bring into the house for their scent. All the
above do well in pots with winter flowering pansies to
give colour in winter and spring.

Cut out the fruited canes of raspberries and harvest the

last apples from trees. Laying turf in October is ideal
as the soil below should remain moist to encourage
rooting and you will be less likely to walk on the lawn
and damage the turf in autumn.
