1. INTRODUCTION

This report describes the Long Haul SDH system design from Ajdabya to Kufra. A survey has been carried
out using existing sites with towers and proposed new sites received from Al Madar prior to survey.

Main focus for this design has been to use existing towers where possible and also consider the site position
given in the Al Madar GSM network preliminary design.

This report is a system design report and describes possible solution for the link Ajdabya to Kufra. Detailed
site description is not attached in this report as most sites are new.
The existing sites that can be used are all located close to the main road to be used for GSM sites.

Al Madar have 50 citylink 1+1 frequency diversity available supplied by Nera in 2005. Prior to survey and
system design it was understood that the Nera should use these radios for the design. During survey there
was another request from Al Madar staff that we would use Interlink 3+1(expandable) Indoor and Interlink
Split mount 3+1 outdoor equipment.

Equipment summary is attached in chapter 2. There are different types of equipment that can be used and a
final performance predictions of the design will be attached later when equipment type and configuration is
decided.

This report describes a general system design that can be used for several design options. Final design will be
based on Al Madar’s decision of what type of radio to use.

Path profiles are attached in appendix.

We would like to thank El Madar personnel for a high level of support and flexibility. This resulted in that
field work could be performed effectively and without any problems.

The design is based on using the proposed GSM sites received from Al Madar prior to the survey. In some
cases the proposed sites have been relocated to get LOS and stretch the path distance.

The following sites have existing towers and Nera are required to use these sites in the design:
Ajdabya GPTC, Ajdabya8, Ajdabya6, Ajdabya4, Ajdabya2, Awjilah, Jalo, Jalu Kufra1, Jalu Kufra4, Sarir
OSM, Jalu Kufra11, Jalu Kufra15(or near), Al Kufrah2

Al madar has existing 40 and 50m towers in storage. Nera has been using these in the design as much as
possible. In some cases 60 and 80m has to be used. Available towers are three 70m towers and one 60m.

New shelters, solar, battery and radio racks are needed for all new sites.
There is a request from Al Madar engineer to use passive air-condition shelters if possible.
There is available space inside the shelters at Ajdabya GPTC and Sarir OSM.

Possible radio configurations:

Interlink 3+1 Indoor
Interlink 3+1 Split mount, Indoor or outdoor
Citylink 1+1, Indoor or outdoor

Based on the final site selection there could be a possible overshoot problem as the links are following the
main road. This will results in 3 links in a perfect line and should be avoided if possible. This depends on the
final design solution with only 4 channels available.
One possibility is to move a site a few km away from the main road to create and acceptable angle. Using
better antennas is also a possibility.
This can be decided when radio equipment and configuration to be used is confirmed, see below.

Path profiles are attached in Appendix1.

The link 85-Jalu Kufra has 2 options.
By using a 80 and 70m tower the tower can be located next to the road. As an option the site can be located
on the nearest hill 150m from the road. By using the hill the tower can be reduce to 60m. See attached path
profiles.

2.1 Equipment

2.1.1 Radio Equipment

Al madar has 50 hops of Citylink available in storage. There is a possibility that these radios will be used but
this will be 1+1 configuration.
Prior to survey the preliminary design was discussed and there was a request that also Interlink split mount
3+1 outdoor equipment is to be considered.

The path Ajdabya – Lajo is design with Interlink indoor equipment 3+1 STM-1 systems operating in the 8
GHz frequency band in case future expansion is required.

Due to propagation conditions and experience in Libya all paths are design with a maximum path length of
around 30km. Space diversity is used for most links.

Due to desert area and possible problems due to sand storms all equipment might be installed indoor. Feeder
will be required for Citylink and Interlink Split Mount equipment.
The design in equipment summary below is using indoor equipment and feeder. If the final design will be
using outdoor equipment some of the antennas in the following tables will be reduced.

2.1.2 Antennas
Existing antenna system on the route is of type HPX. These antennas have high efficiency and may therefore
provide high performance with small sizes. HSX antennas should be used where there might be an overshoot
problem.

All feeders in performance predictions are set to 10m more than the path profiles antenna heights.

3. PATH PROFILES

Digital Elevation models are used for generating initial path profiles, survey finding are used to modify data.

The profiles are presented as follows:

k= 1.33 , 100% of first Fresnel zone.

Minimum k according to ITU-R rec 530- 10. Please refer to figure 4.1., 60% Fresnel zone.
K=0.66 is used as minimum value.

Where ground reflections are expected, reflection analyses are performed in order to propose optimum
antenna heights.

All profiles are attached in Appendix1.

4. PERFORMANCE PREDICTIONS

4.1 Experience from existing system

The system is predicted based on experience from the existing systems in Libya.
ITU-T Rec. G.826 National long haul objectives

Based on experience in the area, the following factors are used:

PL% 30 (based on experience- 10% was previously considered as valid value in the area)

4.2 Prediction method

The performance calculations are valid for normal propagation conditions in the area. Anomalous
propagation conditions causing ducting or other similar problems are not considered in these performance
calculations. The error performance calculations are based on statistical models and will only be an
indication of the system quality.

System performance should be compared with end to end objectives as statistical variations between each
individual path are expected.

The applied calculation methods and formulas are given in the Nera document
"Prediction of Transmission Quality on Digital L.O.S. Radio Relays", Rev.B 99.05.01.

5. FREQUENCY PLAN

Four 29.65 MHz wide channels are assigned for Al Madar use. The final frequency plan will be design based
on the selection of radio equipment as described in system description. If Citylink 1+1 is to be used then we
have 4 channels available and will avoid overshoot problems. Using Interlink 3+1 split mount radio requires
4 channels and dual polarization.
