Infectious Diseases
Title of Project.
Individual Project – Developing a resource for young
people that informs them about infectious diseases.
I hereby acknowledge that I have received this assessment task and the information needed to
complete the task in this workbook
Task Description.
Despite improvements in medical science, there is still a real and dangerous risk associated
with infectious diseases in Australia and overseas. The Australian government is most
concerned about young adults who enjoy travelling to destinations that are riskier to their
health than what they typically face here in Australia. Travel to Europe, Asia, Africa and
South America are common destinations for young Australians, often travelling on a budget
and to areas with poor medical access.
The Australian government has asked you to produce informative material that can be easily
disseminated to young people prior to them leaving the country. They are asking you to put
together either a video, podcast or an interactive E-book that will be available on their
website. They have asked you to focus on two (2) pathogens of infectious disease. One
pathogen that they are likely to or are at risk of encountering whilst travelling (including in
Australia), and one pathogen that recently (since the year 2000) caused an epidemic in
Europe, Asia, Africa or South America.
Note – You can not use Zika or Ebola for your project as these were the case studies
covered in class.
You must choose two pathogens to research and present your findings on. The pathogens can
be either microorganisms, macroorganisms or non-cellular pathogens. Your presentation
must take one (1) of the below forms.
You will be given five (5) hours of class time to work on and complete this task. The rest of
the time needed is to be spent outside of class time. During this time, your teacher will be
available to help guide your investigation and research. It is recommended that you complete
your research and write your script before you record your video or podcast, or before you
begin to publish on iBook Author. Your teacher, or the computer lab assistants will assist
with any ICT problems that arise for you.
Vodcast
- Your Vodcast must be between 7 and 10 minutes in length.
- The introduction MUST include your name and student number and include a
reference list at the end of your video.
- You must present the information in a visually appealing and engaging way and
include relevant information related to your chosen pathogens.
- Your video must be submitted via email AND USB stick with your name clearly
written on it. It must be in an mP4 format and the email must contain either a
downloadable mP4 file or a link to view the video on a website such as YouTube.
- You may use PowerPoint, iMovie, Screencast or any other video production
software.
Podcast
- Your Podcast must be between 7 and 10 minutes in length.
- The introduction MUST include your name and student number.
- The information presented must be clear and audible and present the information
on your pathogens in an engaging way.
- Your podcast must be submitted in an mP3 format, in both an email AND USB stick
format, with your name clearly identifiable.
- You may use Garage Band, QuickTime or any other form of voice recording software.
- You must also hand in a 1-2 page A4 Factsheet with your podcast. Your fact sheet
should include a section for your references. The fact sheet is a summary of the
information that you are presenting in your podcast and must be submitted via
email, with your podcast and in hard copy form with your USB stick
Interactive E-book
- Your E-book must be between 7 and 10 pages long.
- Your E-Book must include at least one (1) interactive element. This might be in the
forms of graphical data, a slide show, an interactive map or anything that will add to
your E-Book. You may use as many interactive elements as you like.
- The E-Book must include your name of clearly on the front page.
- Your E-Book must include a title page, table of contents and reference section.
- You must submit a direct link to your E-Book AND a hard printed copy of your E-
Book. You do not have to make your hard copy interactive, but you MUST make your
electronic version interactive.
- You MUST use iBook Author publishing software to make your E-Book.
Outcomes Assessed.
Knowledge and Understanding.
Working Scientifically.
- selects and processes appropriate qualitative and quantitative data and information
using a range of appropriate media (BIO11/12-4)
- analyses and evaluates primary and secondary data and information (BIO11/12-5)
- communicates scientific understanding using suitable language and terminology for
a specific audience or purpose (BIO11/12-7)
This video shows you a basic level investigation into the Zika Virus and the Ebola Virus
epidemics. This is not representative of the quality of work you are expected to produce, but
rather act as a guide to how you can produce your video, or podcast.
Your teacher will provide you with additional exemplars from last year’s assessment. These
are to be used as a guide only and are NOT to form any part of your project. If Similarities
are picked up between your work and the exemplar, you will automatically fail this
assessment and be awarded a “Did Not Attempt” on your HSC assessment.

Podcast – Make sure you save in an mP4 file to email your submission.
Interactive E-Book – The only program you should use is iBook Author. It is on the
computers in the computer lab and you can download it to your own device. It will allow you
to publish your interactive E-Book. This will be the only program that your teacher can
access and read.
