Midwood High School at Brooklyn College is known to be one of the most respected high

schools in Brooklyn due to its assortment of extracurricular activities, challenging courses and great
teachers.

Many students compete to get into Midwood because of the Humanities and Medical Science
programs. The Humanities program offers classes that deal with languages such as Latin, as well as
Social Studies and English electives. In the humanities program, many Russian students take anatomy as
a science class because it makes students dissect animals and learn about the human body. Along with
that, students take two years of Latin which is crucial for students who want to become dentists.

The Medical Science curriculum makes you take three years worth of science classes that require
regents and are offered wide ranges of science electives. Many of the Russian students apply for the
Medical Science program where they take biology, chemistry and physics throughout the four years of
school. I’m in the Med-Sci program along with many of my friends who have taken these classes with
me. One of the school’s Russian teachers, Semyon Khotyanov, taught physics. Along with the regents
classes, Russian students, such as Edwin Gelman, Denis Cherklain and Elizabeth Zayovsky, also have
taken advanced placement (AP) courses in chemistry and physics. Other classes that Russian students
take great interest in are AP US History, AP English, Science and Social Intel, AP Psychology and AP
Statistics. These classes help students gain more knowledge in the subject and experience college level
work.

“ Midwood’s Science Intel and AP US History classes have exposed me to the amount of work
I’m going to do in college” said Nick Korol ’11.

In addition to classes, Midwood is one of the few schools that offer the widest varieties of sports
teams. These teams consist of football, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, wrestling, swimming, tennis,
cheerleading etc. The most popular amongst Midwood’s Russian community is tennis, wrestling and
swimming. Svetlana Kutyrcheva is the girl’s swimming coach; she trained the girls so well that they beat
schools such as James Madison and Leon M. Goldstein. In addition to swimming, the girl’s and boy’s
tennis team have many Russian students such as Julia Malinovskaya, Olivia Berman, and Loren Bluvstien.
The wrestling team is also known to have ambitious Russian fighters such as Emil Pesin.

Midwood High School attracts Russian students because it offers classes which give students a
glimpse of what lies ahead. From regular Regents classes to electives and to AP classes, each class gives
higher knowledge than most public schools which is why it continues to be one of the top schools in
Brooklyn.
