Concept/Topic to Teach: Teaching first graders the different continents and cultures with a
General Goal(s): Students are to learn about where each culture is located within a hand made
globe.
Specific Objectives: Students are to make a globe out of a balloon, paper mache and decorate it.
They are to gain the knowledge of where every continent is along with what culture is there.
Required Materials: Balloons, Paper Mache(already mixed and ready to use), Markers, Paint(if
necessary), Continent Outline Copies, Plastic Cup to hold balloon in place, Old T-Shirt from
Anticipatory Set(Lead-In): A discussion will be given before the lesson to make sure they know
where each culture should be around the world. Students will write down every possible culture
they can come up with so they can use for their globe later on along with a list of the continents.
4) Repeat third step until the balloon is covered completely, only leaving the button where it is
tied up clear.
5) Let it dry.
7) After dry, place Continent cutout on balloon covered paper mache and trace the outline on it.
8) Color balloon covered paper mache with markers or if students would like to use paint
instead.
9) Label Continents.
10) With a Pencil, pop the balloon from where it is tied and carefully remove balloon from inside
11) Lastly, Cover the button of Globe carefully with strips of paper mache.
Plan For Independent Practice: Students are to take a world map pretest with their globe to get
them familiar with where each culture lies on the globe and continent. They will then take the

normal test without their globes(which will be put away in cubbies) to test their memory and
knowledge.
Closure(Reflect Anticipatory Set): In the end, students will have a better knowledge of each

pots and underglaze them. They are to learn the various brush strokes to create shapes and
animals.
