This document discusses meteorological instruments and their uses, as well as the PROBE-Odisha Programme from 2009-2012. It describes several instruments - cup counter anemometers for measuring wind speed, wind vanes for wind direction, rain gauges for measuring rainfall, Stevenson screens for housing various thermometers, sunshine recorders, and open pan evaporimeters. It then discusses the PROBE-Odisha programme where weather data was collected at 15 schools and sent to resource centers and government agencies to create a weather database and promote science education.

CUP COUNTER ANEMOMETER: Cup Counter Anemometer is
manufactured for measuring wind velocity. This instrument measures total run of wind passing at the point of observation through mechanical Counter of the range 0 to 9999.9 k.m. It is used to record speed of wind flow.
WIND VANE: a Wind Vane is an instrument for showing the direction
of the wind which indicates the direction of wind at the point of observation.
RAIN GAGE: Non Recording Rain Gauge is manufactured from non
corrosive of collector assembled with Gun-metal Ring. Tunnel locking Rings and Base. The Rain Gauge is supplied with 4 liter/2 liter plastic bottle and measuring cylinder. Rain Gauges are available two different capacities 100 sq. cms collected area and 200sq cms collected area.
STEVENSON SCREEN: These Screens are manufactured for housing
thermograph, hydrograph dry and wet bulb. Thermometer and Maximum- Minimum Thermometer. Basicallay these are manufactured from best quality Indian wood and accurately assembled with side louvers and supplied Available in two sizes:- Small Size 8f Large Size, i.e sterasay Stream &f Metautyiae.
With in the Stevenson Screen, four different types of thermometers i.e,
Maximum Thermometer, Minimum Thermometer, Dry Bulb Thermometer and Wet Bulb Thermometer, are being placed to record current weather temperature. Maximum Thermometer is used to record the Maximum Temperature of the day. Where as, Minimum Thermometer is used to record Minimum Temperature of the day. Likely, Dry Bulb and Wet Bulb Thermometer is used to measure the Dew Point and Relative Humidity of the atmosphere. SUN SHINE RECORDER: The Sun-Shine Recorder is manufactiured for the basic main components are bowis which are manufactured from Bronze and precisely machined and assembled. Base is of White Marble. The sphere bowl is made uniformed and well annealed and air bubble free glass having good surface finish. The instrument is always supplied with one year recording graph, and standard stenciled curve for comparision.
OPEN PAN EVAPORIMETER: The Pan is manufactured from pure copper,
duly tinned and epoxy pointed and tested for water leakproofness. The stilling well and thermometer clamps are manufactured from Brass. This is supported on wooden platform and covered with reinforced chickenmesh. Measuring Jar is manufactured from transparent Acrylic also available is bran. The weather is an important part of our lives and one that we
cannot controls. Instead the weather often controls how and where we live, what we do, what we wear and what we eat but as a thematic subject are yet to accomplish proper implications of weather as a system amongst school students. Women & Child Welfare Society is appointed as a Technical Resource Centre (TRC) by Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, Ministry of Science & Technology, New Delhi to implement “Participation of Youth in Real Time/ field Observation for Benefit to Education” (PROBE) Programme in Jajpur and Kendrapada district of Odisha. It involves installation of Weather Laboratories within the premises of identified schools in which the students are encouraged to take and record daily weather data/ observations. In this multi-institutional project a two-way relationship is envisaged between school Students, Teachers and Professors in centres of Higher Learning. Both aspects such as observation and learning about weather and climate are emphasized in this project. Observation protocols are devised and the data collected by schools are sent to Technical Resource Centre (Women & Child Welfare Society) subsequently to DST as well as to Indian Metrological Department (IMD) for quality consistency. As per the grant, Women & Child Welfare Society has extended this programme to 15 selected schools like:- 1) M. V. Vidyayana: Badachana, 2) Jaraka High School: Jaraka,3) Khetrapal High School: Kolathala, 4) N.C. High School: Jajpur Road, 5)Chitalo High School: Chitalo,6) Baruneswar High School,Binjharpur,7) Jagabandhu Roula High School:Govindpur in Jajpur district and 8) Korua High School:Korua,9)BaladevHighSchool:Kendrapada,10)Derabish Govt.High School:Derabish,11)Marsaghai High School: Marsaghai, 12)Rajnagar High School: Rajnagar,13)Rajkanika Girls High School: Rajkanika,14)S.K.Dev High School: ,Panchayat High School: Pattamundai in Kendrapada district.
The weather data base created by school children
will be utilized DST & IMD as well as PROBE data will also be helpful for research in universities on the topics aiming on water management, climate change, disaster mitigation, boi-diversity as well as mesco-scale modeling studies to supplement our efforts in achieving better local forecast. Through participation in PROBE young minds of school students are exposed to scientific intricacies of weather. They are motivated to pursue science as a career and develop better understanding to take safety measures from weather related hazards and also develop acumen to forecast weather for local use.
