3.1. Introduction

This lab focuses on running a simulation and viewing the results in the DEFORM™-3D
Post- rocessor!

3.. O!"nin# $ Pr"%iou'( S$%"d Pro)'"*

"f DEFORM is not alread# oen$ oen it as #ou did in the revious lab! %hen the M&"'
window oens$ clic( on the )*O+, folder in the Director# list and then highlight the
)*O+,!D) file in the file list!

3.3. St$rtin# t+" Si*u'$tion

ou are now read# to start the simulation b# clic(ing in the

list!

The rogress of the simulation can be

monitored as it is running b# loo(ing at the
Message file! +lic( the Message tab to view the
Message file! &s long as the

otion is chec(ed$ which is the default setting$

the Message file will refresh ever# coule of
seconds!

The Message file rovides information about

which simulation ste the simulation is
currentl# on and also gives information dealing
with how well the simulation is running!
DEFORM™-3D *abs

%hen the simulation has finished$ the following message will be added to the end of the
Message file/

! The DEFORM-3D Post-rocessor will aear!

3.4.1. Step Selection

To select the ste to be viewed$ there is a ste list ull-down menu at the to of the window!
0se the ull-down list to select a ste!

The icon can be used to bring u the 1TEP *"1T window$ which allows the user to
define more detailed ste settings! The following buttons are also available for selecting a

3.4.2. State Variables

1ome of the most commonl# used state variables can be viewed using the 1tate 2ariable ull-
down menu at the to of the window!
1elect Strain--Effective from the list to loo( at the amount of deformation the wor(iece has
undergone! +lic( the icon to bring u the 1T&TE 2&R"&)*E window$ and select

as the Scaling otion! This otion will use the global Min and Ma effective

strain as the etremes on the color bar! Pla# through the stes of the simulation to observe the
accumulation of strain!

The 1tate 2ariable ull-down list onl# shows a coule of the variables that can be lotted!
The icon can be used to access all of the state variable otions!

3.4.3. Point Tracking

%e want to define several oints on the undeformed geometr# and see where the# go as the art
deforms! To view the undeformed geometr#$ clic( the button to view the first ste of the

simulation! 'ow clic( three locations on the wor(iece 6close to those shown below7 and clic(
the button!

"f Effective 1train was still being lotted in the D"1P*& window$ then a Point Trac(ing lot
will aear showing Effective 1train vs! Time for the three oints that were selected$ and the
following will get added to the Ob4ect Tree/

"f no state variable was being lotted when the oints were trac(ed$ then the following will
be shown in the Ob4ect Tree/

%hen a state variable is selected from the 1tate 2ariable ull-down menu$ the oint trac(ing
grah for the three oints will aear in the D"1 P*& window!

+lic( the icon to la# the through the stes! ou will notice that the corresonding ste on

3.4.4. Slicing Objects

"n DEFORM-3D it is ossible to slice an ob4ect and then view different state var iables within
the ob4ect! *et8s first hide the Point Trac(ing grah b# right-clic(ing the Point Trac(ing in the
Ob4ect Tree and selecting the Hie PointTracking otion!

+lic( the icon to oen the 1*"+"'5 window! The ob4ects can be sliced in several different

wa#s! The ob4ects in the D"1P*& window have a #ellow rectangular bo surrounding them!
)# clic(ing on a vertical edge of the bo$ a hori9ontal slicing lane will be created! )# clic(ing
on a hori9ontal edge of the bo$ a vertical slicing lane will be created! +lic( the #ellow bo in
several locations to eeriment with this slicing otion!
The slicing lanes are defined b# a oint on a lane and a normal direction to that lane! These
are designated in the 1*"+"'5 window b# P 6Point7 and ' 6'ormal7!

The ob4ects can also be sliced b# selecting the :$ $ or ; coordinate of the Point and then using
the slider bar to drag that coordinate u or down! &s the slider moves$ the ob4ects will be
d#namicall# sliced! +lic( the : coordinate of the Point$ as circled below$ and then drag the slider
 bac( and
forth to slice the
ob4ects!
1everal otions are available for determining how the sliced surfaces are disla#ed!
