The function of a human brain

The brain controls many parts of the human body, including body
temperature, movement and emotions. The brain has about 100 million
nerve cells, called neurons. They transmit electrochemical signals to each
other through an axon. Nerve endings called dendrites allow the cells to
communicate to each other and transmit messages. They are located on
the ends of the cell. It is these signals that make up what we react to all the
time.

The brain is made up of three parts, the forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain.
The forebrain consist of the limbic system, including the cortex, the
midbrain has parts of the brainstem and the hindbrain is made up of the
cerebellum, pons and medulla. The midbrain, pons and medulla are
collectively known as the brainstem. The cortex is the largest part of the
brain and is divided into four lobes, the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital
lobe and temporal lobe, responsible for reasoning, movement, visual
processing and auditory perception respectively. The cortex is very
wrinkled to increase the amount of neurons in it. There is a furrow which
divides the cortex into two sides, the left and right hemispheres, the right
side is associated with creativity and the left side logic. The cerebellum is
also divided into two hemispheres and is wrinkled and is associated with
movement, posture and balance. The limbic system, is made up of four
parts, the thalamus, hypothalamus, amygdala and hippocampus. The
limbic system controls emotions and is very old in terms of evolution. The
brain stem is located under the limbic system and is responsible for basic
functions of life such as breathing, heartbeat and blood pressure. It is made
up of the midbrain, pons and medulla.
