Lesson Idea Name: Who Am I?

Content Area: Animal Classification
Grade Level(s): 5th grade

Content Standard Addressed: S5L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to group organisms
using scientific classification procedures. a. Develop a model that illustrates how animals are sorted into
groups (vertebrate and invertebrate) and how vertebrates are sorted into groups (fish, amphibian, reptile,
bird, and mammal) using data from multiple sources.

Technology Standard Addressed: 6- Creative Communicator

Selected Technology Tool: PowerPoint

URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): N/A

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

PowerPoint is accessible to all students on their home and school computers. This lesson supports the
learning experience for visual and auditory learners. This lesson can also support the learning experience for
ESOL learners by including the name of each animal classification in the EL’s native language.

Lesson idea implementation:

I would introduce this lesson to my students by giving students picture examples of many different animals.
Students will be placed into groups and I will ask them to characterize the animals by characteristics any way
they please. Each group will present their animal classes when they are finished. After students present their
own classifications, I will explain to them that animals can be grouped into “vertebrates” and “invertebrates.”
I will show students the PowerPoint lesson and explain to them that vertebrates can also be classified into
even smaller groups such as mammals, birds, etc. Because this is all new vocabulary, we will add these new
words to our science word wall to have as reference during the lesson.
After the lesson, students will work in groups to create their own e-books over PowerPoint. Each group will
be assigned one specific class to create their e-book on. Students will create their e-books with words and
visuals. Students will present their e-books to the class and can also refer to their e-books as a study tool for
their unit test.

Reflective Practice:
I think this lesson is super engaging and fun for students. It gives them the ability to be creative and apply
what they have learned. This activity is hands-on and uses a visual and auditory learning approach. Students
are assigned to work together in groups which leads to engagement and classroom discussion. To further
extend this lesson, student e-books will be uploaded onto a classroom blog, so parents and other faculty
members can see them.
