Name of lesson: Book editor

Grade level: 5th

Technology Content Standard: Creativity and Innovation: Students demonstrate creative


thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology.
1 B. 5. 1 Create an original, digital work as a form of personal or group expression with minimal
teacher support.

Other Content Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.3 Write narratives to develop real or


imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event
sequences.

Objective: Students will begin to understand how to manipulate different objects and tools to
create a front cover in order to attract a potential reader. Students will attempt to grab hold of a
reader’s attention with a captivating summary of a book.

Materials needed:

 Book The Seventh Most Important Thing by Shelley Pearsall.


 White paper
 rulers
 Colored pencils
 Microsoft Word

Suggested group size: solo project

Procedures:

1. Have students use white paper and colored pencils to begin their design of how
they want their book cover to look like along with a written out summary of the
book in their own words. Students are to make sure that their artwork fits within
the measurements of 9.76 x 8.25 in.

2. Once both cover art and summary are finished students continue their work on the
computer by opening Microsoft Word and using the tools to create their book
cover. Students are to have first/last name along with date on the front cover
along with author’s name.

i. Shapes
ii. Clipart
iii. Text box
iv. Word art
3. Have students insert a new page and have them write out their summary with a
legible print and students are to paste a picture of the author on this page within
the same measurements of the front cover 9.76 x 8.26 in.
4. Have students print out their work front and back sided.
a. Ctrl+P
b. Manually print on both sides.

Assessment: A formative and summative assessment will be used to see how students are
progressing with their projects and with their final product they will be graded with how well
they were able to implement the different tools within the program and how they were able to
captivate a reader with the short summary of the book.
