Using Your Meter
So far you have figured out how to tell which meter you have and set your units up. Now its time
to learn how to use your serviceman.

Pressure measurement
When taking a single pressure measurement with your new meter you will need the following
items:

(1) One Serviceman Meter

(2) One Pressure Transducer

Four Pin Sockets

1. Your meter has two four pin sockets on its face near the bottom. The one on the left is input
1 and the one on the right is input 2.

2. Your transducer has a cable attached to it that has a four-pin connector on it.

Be careful in this next step as it only connects when the boss on the connector is lined up
with the notch in the socket.

3. Plug the four-pin connector on the transducer cable into input one on the meter by screwing
the sleeve on the connector clockwise. Be sure your only turning the sleeve on the
connector.

Figure 1 Plugging in Your Transducer

4. Now connect the transducer to your hydraulic system via the coupling on the transducer (i.e.
PD, PDP, EMA)
Coupling

5. Turn the meter on by depressing the ÒON/OFFÓ key.

Take a moment to notice the following items on your Servicemans display

Input Automatic Unit

IMPORTANT!
6. Since you are connected to input one make sure the input indicator reads ÒINP1Ó indicating it
is displaying input one.
7. If the display reads ÒINP2Ó depress the ÒINP1/2Ó key to toggle to input one.

*Note: When taking readings with two transducers of any type (i.e.
pressure transducer, temperature sensor, flow meter and RPM sensor) use
the ÒINP1/2Ó key to change the input your viewing on the display.

Congratulations you have successfully learned how to take a pressure

measurement.
Minimum & Maximum Pressure Recording (spikes and drops)
Your New Serviceman meter is capable of capturing any pressure spike or pressure drop as long
as it is 2 milliseconds (.002 seconds) long. This means you can capture virtually any spike in
your hydraulic system. To capture pressure spikes and drops in your systems pressure follow the
steps below.

1. Turn on your meter using the on/off key.

2. Depress the ÒRESETÓ button on your meter. This resets the internal minimum and maximum
values of your meter.

3. Run your hydraulic system until you believe the pressure spike or drop has occurred.

4. Depress the ÒMAXÓ button to view the maximum pressure the transducer has seen since you
depressed the reset button.
5. Depress the ÒMINÓ button to view the minimum pressure the meter has seen since you
depressed the reset button.

Congratulations you have successfully learned how to capture pressure

spikes and pressure dives.

Differential Pressure Measurement (Pressure Drop)

Your new meter can be used to measure pressure drop across any hydraulic component. What
doe that mean? Follow along.

To take a differential measurement you will need the following items:

(1) Serviceman meter

(2) Two transducers whose pressure ranges are the same (i.e. two 1,450 psi transducers)

*Note: If you try to perform a differential pressure measurement with two transducers that
do not have the same pressure range you will not succeed.

1. Connect the transducers into input one and input two on the meter via the four pin
connectors. If you are unfamiliar on how they connect see the section of this guide called
ÒPressure MeasurementÓ.
2. Connect your transducers across a component of your hydraulic system via the couplings on
the transducers. In the picture below the transducers a connected across a hydraulic motor.

3. Turn the meter on using the ÒON/OFFÓ button.

4. Depress the Ò∆PÓ button on the meter. The input indicator in the LCD display now shows
ÒINP1-INP2Ó indicating the display is showing you a differential measurement.

Input Indicator

5. Your display is showing you the difference between input 1 & Input 2 (Input 1-Input 2).

*Important Note Differential measurements may be taken with any two

devices that are the same range (i.e. Two Flow Sensors, Two Temperature
Sensors, Two RPM Sensors). Once you have performed the Sections of
this manual on Flow, Temperature and RPM Sensors. You may find a use
for this in your system.

Congratulations you have successfully learned how to take a differential

pressure measurement.
Measuring with Flow Meters, Temperature Sensors, and RPM Sensors
Since all measuring (i.e. pressure, flow, temperature, and RPM) with your Serviceman meter is
similair the following abreviated sections are provided.

Flow Measurements

You need the following for taking a flow measurement with your meter

(1) One Serviceman meter

(2) One flowmeter with electronics
(3) One four to five pin cable (SCK-102-02-08)

1. Connect your flow meter (black block with openings on each end) to your hydraulic system
via the ports on both ends. Be sure the side which is stamped ÒINÓ is the inlet.

2. Connect the five pin end of the cable to the electronics (silver tube with wire coming out of it).
Notice the five pin connector only needs to be pushed into the electronics. It does not screw
in like the four pin connectors.

3. Connect the four pin end of the cable to the serviceman meterÕs input 1 socket by screwing
the sleeve on the connector clockwise. Be sure you are only turning the sleeve on the
connector.

4. Connect the electronics to the flow meter by screwing the connector to the socket in the
center of the flow meter. Just as before the boss on the connector must line up with the
notch in the socket for the connector to be properly aligned.

Screw Together

5. Turn on your meter on if you have not already done so.

6. Be sure that the input indicator on the LCD display reads ÒINP1Ó signifying the meterÕs display
is displaying input1. If it reads ÒINP2Ó press the ÒINP1/2Ó key to toggle the display.

7. Turn on your hydraulic system and monitor the display as needed.

8. Min and Max Flow values can be captured exactly the same way as described in the section
of this manual called Minimum & Maximum Pressure Recording (spikes and drops). Just use
the words flow meter wherever it says pressure transducer.

Congratulations you have successfully learned how to take a flow

measurement

Temperature Measurements

You need the following for taking a temperature measurement with your meter

(1) One Serviceman meter

(2) One Temperature Probe (SCT-150-74-08)

Your temperature sensor may be connected to your hydraulic system by one of the following two
methods:

A. Threaded into the temperature port on a flow meter that is connected to your system (This is
the port with a plug in it when you received the flow meter).

Temperature
Port

B. Threaded into a port in your hydraulic system utilizing a T in the line or other similar methods.

1. Connect the four-pin temperature probe cable to the serviceman meterÕs input 1 socket by
screwing the sleeve on the connector. Be sure you are only turning the sleeve on the
connector.

2. Connect the temperature probe to your system by one of the methods described above.

3. Turn on your meter if you have not already done so.

4. Be sure that the input indicator on the LCD display reads ÒINP1Ó signifying the meters display
is displaying input1. If it reads ÒINP2Ó press the ÒINP1/2Ó key to toggle the display.

5. Turn on your hydraulic system and monitor the display as needed.

6. Min and max temperature values can be captured exactly the same way as described in the
section of this manual called Minimum & Maximum Pressure Recording (spikes and drops).
Just use the words temperature sensor wherever it says pressure transducer.

Congratulations you have successfully learned how to take a temperature

measurement.
RPM or U/Min Measurements

You need the following for taking a RPM measurement with your meter

(1) One Serviceman meter

(2) One RPM measurement device (SCRPM-210)

You can utilize the RPM gauge to measure many repetitive motions. Some examples are given:

Shaft RPM, Pendulum frequency (swings/min), gear rpm, machine operating speed (parts/min),
etc

The are two ways you may take measurements with this device.

A. Place reflective tape on a moving object and place the RPM sensor so the light emitted by
the sensor reflects off the tape. This type of a reading will tell you how many times the tape
reflects the light back to the sensor per minute. The sensor and tape are pictured below.

B. This method utilizes an additional contact attachment (SCRPMA-001) which allows you to
touch the end of the rpm sensor to a rotating object. The RPM sensor with attachment is
shown below.

By calculating the circumference (2πr) of the rubber wheel and the circumference (2πr) of the
rotating object you can obtain a ratio which will allow you to calculate the RPM of the object
spinning. This is useful when a rotating device can not be stopped to apply a reflective decal.
The following formulas can be used when doing this calculation:

Circumference of Sensor Wheel

(Reading on meter) x = RPM of Spinning Circular Object
Circumference Where Measuremen t Taken

1. Connect the four pin end of the RPM Sensor cable to the serviceman meterÕs input 1 socket
by screwing the sleeve on the connector clockwise. Be sure you are only turning the sleeve
on the connector.

2. Setup the RPM Sensor with your system by one of the methods described above (one
method is shown below).

3. Turn on your meter if you have not already done so using the ÒON/OFFÓ key.

4. Be sure that the input indicator on the LCD display reads ÒINP1Ó signifying the meters display
is displaying input1. If it reads ÒINP2Ó press theÓINP1/2Ó key to toggle the display.

5. Turn on your hydraulic system and monitor the display as needed.

6. Min and Max Flow values can be captured exactly the same way as described in the section
of this manual called Minimum & Maximum Pressure Recording (spikes and drops) Just use
the words RPM sensor wherever it says pressure transducer.

Congratulations you have successfully learned how a RPM measurement.

want the meter to send a min and max value to the PC (the min and max value it sends is the min
and max value the meter has seen since the last time it sent a min and max to the PC).

Confusing sentence? Yes. What it means though is that you will never miss a pressure spike or
drop in you system during a test as long as its at least 2 milliseconds long. This is the electronic
communication rate between the meter and transducers!
7. Use the ÒMINÓ and ÒMAXÓ keys to set the print interval in seconds.

8. Once the desired value in seconds appears on the LCD press the ÒHOLDÓ key to save and

At this point you should see your data in excel. It should look something like the picture below.

Preparing Data for Graphing

You will notice the software does not plot the time next to your pressures, flows, temperatures, or
RPMs. You must do the following to plot your reading vs. time. First you must know your print
interval as this is key in plotting time with your values.

Next you are going to enter some formulas in Excel to speed up the process. DonÕt be scared if
you have not done this before. We will walk through it. For this example the print interval is 3
seconds.
First ENTER the following FORMULA in the cell to the left of the first value you wish to plot: =3.
Click on the cell to enter it.

Enter =3
as
Shown

Second ENTER an EQUALS SIGN in the cell right below the cell you just put Ò=3Ó in.
Before you touch anything CLICK in the cell which has Ò=3Ó in it. This will put the value of the first
cell into the second cell. Before you touch anything TYPE IN +3 after the cell number which has
just appeared after you clicked on the first cell. Now HIT ENTER. You should see the number 6
in the second cell if you have done this correctly. See below for graphical representation.

First
Cell

Press
Enter
Enter Ò=Ó then click on
first cell and put +3 on
the end as shown

What you have just done is tell Excel the first cell is equal to 3. The second cell is equal to the
first cell plus three (Cell A5 +3 in this example). To continue this wonderful sequence and finish
this madness we must repeat this process for the entire data set.
To do this simply CLICK in the SECOND CELL (=A5+3) and notice the small square in the lower
right hand corner of the highlight now around the cell.

Small
Square

Move your mouse pointer over the small square and notice it changes to a cross hair (+). When
this happens CLICK you mouse button and HOLD it while DRAGGING DOWN the COLUMN to
the END of the DATA as shown

End of Data
If this has been done correctly you should have a column which starts with three at the top and
counts in multiples of three until the end of the data. If so PAT YOURSELF ON THE BACK.

Column
Counting by
Three

Graphing your Data

Now we are going to graph the time column you just created vs. the values in the column to the
right. CLICK AND HOLD YOUR MOUSE KEY ON THE FIRST TIME CELL (the cell which has a
three in it for this example). MOVE THE MOUSE DOWNWARD, ONE COLUMN TO THE RIGHT
AND TO THE END OF THE DATA AT THE BOTTOM THE SPREADSHEET. RELEASE THE
MOUSE POINTER KEY. You should see the cells you have highlighted in black if you have done
this correctly.

Now the data is selected and we must graph it. DEPRESS THE GRAPHING ICON as shown
below:

Graphing Icon
The following dialog box pops up and you may select the XY (Scatter) graph (this type of graph

works well).

As you notice 5 different types of XY scatter plots are available and you may choose any of them.
It just depends weather or not you want a smooth curve or not and weather you want the dots
connected. CLICK ON THE TYPE OF GRAPH YOU WANT.

From this point on Excel will walk you through the completion of your graph.

You have just learned how to create a graph in Excel
