1. Introduction
The Allison Diagnostic Optimized Connection™ (DOC) tool, Allison DOC®
Premium (H 40/50 EP™), is a diagnostic program designed for use with Allison’s
H 40/50 EP System. This PC-based diagnostic program is capable of reading from
H 40/50 EP controllers using J1939 communication protocols.
Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) performs the following:
 Monitors data from the hybrid PCM, Engine, DPIM, and Energy Storage
System
 Displays multiple transmission parameters
 Displays a graphical instrument panel with analog and digital gauges
 Displays a graphical strip chart
 Records and plays back diagnostic sessions
 Prints diagnostic reports
 Reprograms selected PCM settings
 Exports recorded battery voltages to a comma separated file
 Exports user-selected data items to a comma separated file

Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) provides the following features:


 A Microsoft Windows®/PC look and feel
 A demo mode using prerecorded data
 Training videos
 Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) is compliant with applicable
Technology and Maintenance Council (TMC) Recommended Practices,
SAE Standards, and CE Standards
 Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) is RP1210C compliant

2. Warnings and Notes

WARNING: To avoid personal injury, the vehicle operator must not


use or read the diagnostic tool while the vehicle is moving. Doing so
may result in loss of vehicle control, which may cause personal injury
and vehicle damage.

WARNING: Personnel other than the vehicle operator must use the
diagnostic tool.

WARNING: The vehicle operator must maintain control of the


vehicle while an assistant performs the diagnostic evaluations.

NOTE: Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) users are assumed to


have a basic working knowledge of the Microsoft Windows 7®/10®
Operating System(s).

3-1. Text Conventions


The following text conventions are used in this Guide to more clearly describe
using Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™):
 Screen button and keyboard key names are in bold capitals – OK,
RETURN.
 Menu names are presented as displayed – File, Edit, etc.
 Menu items are presented as displayed – Exit.
 File names that may change with use are in lowercase italics –
snapshot.aed.
 File names, usually system files, that do not change are in initial capitals –
Acrobat.pdf.
 Titles of windows are as they appear in the window.

4. System Requirements
The Allison Diagnostic Optimized Connection™ Premium (H 40/50 EP™) tool
operates in a Windows® environment on either a desktop or laptop PC. Allison
DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) requires approximately 40MB of disk space.
The following defines the minimum system requirements for Allison DOC®
Premium (H 40/50 EP™):
 Microsoft® Windows 7® or Windows 10®
 4GB of RAM system memory
 Pentium® IV class processor 2 GHz
 One available USB, PCMCIA or PCI port
 Monitor capable of supporting a resolution of 1280x768 or higher
 Network card

Other Required Software


In addition to the Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) software the following
software is required:
 Allison DOC® Vendor installation disks for RP1210 devices and drivers
may be included on the Allison DOC® installation medium.

5. Allison Diagnostic Optimized
Connection™ Software Installation
This section explains how to install Allison DOC® on your PC from the
installation media (i.e. USB memory drive, or downloaded file). Before attempting
to install this software, make sure that:
 Your computer satisfies the PC Platform requirements listed on the
“System Requirements” section.
 You have full PC Administrator privileges.
For more information, see your network administrator.

NOTE: The newest version of Allison DOC® will automatically


supersede any previous version of this application. There is no need to
uninstall earlier versions of this application. An E-Learn ID or a
training certificate must be provided to the Allison Support Center to
enable reprogramming.

To install the Allison DOC® software on your PC:


1. Locate the installation media:
 USB: insert the Allison DOC® USB memory drive into a USB port.
If the installation process does not begin momentarily, select Start 
Run from the task bar. Click Browse, locate the Setup.exe file on the
USB stick, and click OK.
 Downloaded File: locate the Allison DOC® installation file that was
downloaded and saved to your computer. Double-click this file to
begin the installation process.

NOTE: This process may take several minutes; please be patient.


Interrupting the installation process could cause issues such as error
messages, unable to connect, blank screens, problems during future
updates, etc.

2. Follow the On-Screen instructions

3. Finally, the Installation Complete window displays to indicate that the
installation has completed successfully. Click the FINISH button to exit
the setup process.

NOTE: The Allison DOC® install medium includes the RP1210


drivers for the following adapters: (1) Noregon Wireless/USB
Translator 2.0, (2) Noregon Softing RP1210, and (3) Dearborn
DPA4/4 Plus USB Translator Device. When prompted, check the box
to have the corresponding drivers automatically installed during setup.
The Noregon Wireless/USB Translator, Nexiq USB-Link/USB-Link2
and Dearborn DPA4PMA/DGDPA5MA adapter drivers are also
included on the installation media, but must be installed separately.
Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) requires a heavy volume of
diagnostic messages to correctly diagnose H 40/50 EP systems. Only
the adapters listed have been qualified as meeting the required data
volume. Additional adapters may be used via the Advanced
Communications Adapter Setup dialog.

6. Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50
EP™) Overview
Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) has been designed to aid the technician in
troubleshooting and maintaining the H 40/50 EP. Allison DOC® Premium (H
40/50 EP™) can be used with a desktop PC or with a laptop PC in the cab of a
vehicle.

WARNING: To avoid personal injury, the vehicle operator must


not use or read the diagnostic tool while the vehicle is moving. Doing
so may result in loss of vehicle control, which may cause personal
injury and property damage.
Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) aids you by providing:
 Displays of real-time and saved transmission operating data that include:
o Trouble codes o Configuration data
o Oil temperature o Motor A speed
o Energy Storage DC Voltage o Motor B speed
o Direction selected/attained o Output speed
 The ability to clear trouble codes
 Access to PCM configuration data
 A graphic data display
 Strip chart data graphing
 A variety of reports such as:
o System/Calibration Information
o Diagnostic Data
o I/O Wires
o Customer Modifiable Constants
o Diagnostic Trouble Codes
o Failure Records
 The ability to extract recorded battery voltage data and user-selected data
to a comma separated file.
 Data Bus Viewer to monitor vehicle data bus traffic and play back saved
data bus traffic files.

6-1. Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™)


Navigation, Controls, and Status Information
Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) displays the following navigation,
control, and status information items regardless of what is displayed in the main
Allison DOC® window.

Status Bar
The status bar provides information about the connection between Allison DOC®
Premium (H 40/50 EP™) and the PCM, DPIM, and ESS. It is located in the upper
portion of the main Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) window. The fields in
the status bar are not labeled, but their content adequately indicates their purpose.
Note that the third field is not used for H 40/50 EP connections.

(System)
Describes the system from which the displayed data is coming.
(Connection)
Describes the connection between Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) and a
vehicle. Descriptions are:
 Connected — Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) is actively
connected to a vehicle and receiving live data.
 Off-Line — The connection between Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50
EP™) and vehicle is not live and no data is being received.
 Playback — The displayed data is part of a snapshot and is not current.
 Recording — Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) is actively
connected to a vehicle and is storing the data in a snapshot file.
(Active Code)
Indicates the presence of an active Trouble Code. Indicators are:
 Active Codes
 No Active Codes

Menus
The menu bar at the top of the Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) window,
below the Status bar, displays the following drop-down menus:
File
 TCM Reflash (PCCS)—opens the Allison calibration tool
 Data Bus Viewer—allows the user to see the J1939 messages in decimal or
hexadecimal format
 Reset CAN Statistics—will reset the total CAN error frame count that is
displayed in the secondary status bar. This is only available when CAN statistics
are supported.
 Exit — exits the Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) program
Reprogram
 Allows the user to modify Customer Modifiable Constants
Action Requests
 Request Energy Storage Data—allows the user to collect detailed information
from the Energy Storage System
 Output Tests — allows the outputs from the PCM to be manually turned on and
off.
 Reset Adaptives — resets the values that are adapted in the H 40/50 EP.
 Clutch Tests – allows the user to manually apply and remove C1 and C2.
 Motor A and Motor B Spin Test — tests Motor A and Motor B for correct spin
and spin direction.
 DTC Floating Window – displays the DTC Floating Window on any of the DOC
screens
 Reset Service Indicator (Model Year 2012 or later) – resets the service indicator
lamp
Snapshot
 Record
 Record Options — displays the recording options window
 Stop Recording — halts recording
 Add Bookmark — displays the bookmark window
 Playback
 Open Playback File — displays the Open window and the content of the
Log folder.
 Play — plays a recorded data file.
 Rewind — starts the playback at the beginning.

 Stop — stops a playback.
 Fast Forward — plays a recorded data file at four times the normal speed.
 Continuous — plays a recorded data file continuously, a looped playback.
 Email — displays the Compose Email window.
 Export — exports user-selected data items from a playback file into an Excel
Spreadsheet (comma separated file) for further analysis.
 Export Voltage Data – exports ESS subpack voltages from a playback file
into an Excel Spreadsheet (comma separated file) for further analysis.
Reports
 Allows the user to print, save, view, or delete a report
Software Configuration
 General tab – allows the user to change the units of measurement
 Update Application – allows the user to check for free application updates
Help
 What’s New — Displays the What’s New document which details the changes
in Allison DOC® since the previous release.
 Allison DOC® User Guide — Launches the application’s help file.
 Allison DOC® Training Videos — Launches Allison DOC® Advanced Help
application, which displays multimedia training videos that provide an
excellent reference of how to navigate and use Allison DOC® and general
diagnostic assistance.
 Demo — displays the Demo snapshot.
 DTC Lookup – displays the Trouble Code Lookup window.
 Troubleshooting Manuals — allows the user to access the troubleshooting
manual.
 Pre 4th Gen H 40/50 EP
 4th/5th Gen H 40/50 EP
 Access to Allison Transmission Website —connects to the Allison
Transmission website, www.allisontransmission.com. Requires Internet
connection, login ID and password to access the Allison extranet.
 Hydraulic Schematics — H 40/50 EP— displays H 40/50 EP hydraulic
schematics
 First and Reverse Range
 Second Range
 Neutral Range
 Configure Internet Connection — Displays the Internet Connection
Configuration settings. Proxy server settings can also be configured.

 Subscription Licenses — Displays all licenses currently activated on the
system and updates information.
 Reset License Information — Resets all license information on the system.
 Reactivate Immediately — Attempts to reactivate the Allison DOC®
application immediately using the license key(s) currently in use on the
system.
 About Allison DOC®
Print Screen
 Opens the Print window

Button and Keyboard Shortcuts


The following buttons are always available in the primary Allison DOC® window.
Clicking the button or pressing the associated function key displays the listed
menu.
F1 - Help
Accesses the Help system
F3 – DTC Lookup
Displays the Trouble Code Lookup window
F4 – Connect
Establish or break the connection between Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50
EP™) and the system.
F5 – Trigger Recording
If no recording has been started yet, this button will start recording a snapshot. If a
snapshot has already been started, this button inserts a “bookmark” in the data
stream during the recording session.
F6 – Stop Recording
Stops a snapshot recording

Accelerator keys — On-screen buttons have shortcuts known as accelerator keys.


An underlined character in the button text identifies the button’s accelerator
keyboard key. Pressing the accelerator key activates the function associated with
the button. For example, on the button below, the P keyboard key is the accelerator
key. Dropdown menu items accelerator keys require pressing ALT before pressing
the accelerator key. After pressing the ALT/ACCELERATOR KEY combination
that menu displays.

When this button is visible, and you press the P key, you activate a print function.

Diagnostic Taskbar

The diagnostic taskbar is located immediately below the Allison Hybrid logo. It
allows the user to navigate among the diagnostic screens, regardless of the current
active screen. The following diagnostic screens are available from the diagnostic
taskbar:

 Data Monitor
 Graphical View
 ESS Data Monitor
 Calibration Information
 Strip Chart
 Custom Data Monitor

Secondary Status Bar

The secondary status bar at the bottom of the Allison DOC® window displays the
following connection information:
#Days
 The number of days left in reactivation period.
Total Connection Time
 Displayed in the first panel. If the user is connected to the vehicle, the
information displayed is how long Allison DOC® has been connected to the
vehicle. If the user is watching a snapshot, “Playback” is displayed.
CAN Error Frames/Second*
 Displayed in the third panel. The information displayed is how many error
frames per second have been detected on the CAN databus. The value
displayed is dynamic and is updated every 5 seconds.
Total CAN error Frames*
 Displayed in the fourth panel. The information displayed is the total number
of error frames read off of the CAN databus since Allison DOC® has been
connected to the vehicle or how many error frames total have been read off of
CAN since the snapshot file was started. The value displayed is dynamic and
changes are displayed when they occur. This value can be reset from the File
menu.
* CAN error data is only available when statistics are supported by connected
translator device.

6-2. Exiting Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™)


There are two ways to exit Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™):
1. Click the EXIT button in the top right corner of the Allison DOC®
window
2. Select the File drop-down menu and select Exit—the Allison DOC®
program closes.

7. Connecting the PC to the Vehicle

An RP1210A or later compliant PC-to-vehicle translator is required. Diagnostic


connections to H 40/50 EP Systems can be made with the following translation
devices:
 Softing CANusb® (USB port)
 Softing CANCard2® (PCMCIA) (USB to PCMCIA adapters are not
supported)
 Softing CAN-AC2_PCI® (PCI bus)
 Nexiq usbLink (version 9.2.0.0 drivers or later)
 Nexiq usbLink 2
 Noregon Wireless/USB Translator 2.0 – All Allison Products
 Noregon Wireless/USB Translator – All Allison Products
 Dearborn DPA5 Multi-Application (USB port)
Additional translation devices can be used via the Advanced Communications
Adapter Setup dialog.
Use the Noregon harness part number 12130 (or 12100) to connect the Softing (or
Nexiq usbLink, Nexiq usbLink 2, Noregon Wireless/USB, Noregon Wireless/USB
2.0, Dearborn DPA Multi-Application) translator device to the vehicle connector.
The diagram below illustrates the hardware connections between the PC hosting
Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™), the Softing translator device or Nexiq
usbLink or Nexiq usbLink 2 or Noregon Wireless/USB Translator 2.0 – All Allison
Products or Noregon Wireless/USB Translator – All Allison Products, and the
12130 or 12100 harness. Due to the large volumes of data that must be read,
wireless or Bluetooth connections are not recommended.

8-1. Starting the Program


There are three ways to start Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™):

When you start Allison DOC®, the Warning window displays. The Warning
window lists basic H 40/50 EP troubleshooting tasks and outlines basic safety
considerations (see Warnings and Notes). The F4 - CONNECT button initiates the
software connection to a vehicle and the DEMO button can start the Allison
DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) Demo. The F3-DTC LOOKUP button displays
the Trouble Code Lookup window.

9-1. Software Configuration


The Software Configuration menu allows you to tailor Allison DOC® Premium (H
40/50 EP™) to your specific preferences and to update the Allison DOC®
application.
Access the Software Configuration function from the menu item at the top of the
screen.
From Software Configuration you can:
 Change languages
 Change units of measure
 Display Hybrid Reprogramming Status
 Update the Allison DOC® application

Reprogramming

An E-Learn ID or a training certificate must be provided to the Allison Support


Center to enable reprogramming.
To enable the Reprogramming feature, please contact Customer Support at 877-
659-6913 (US/Canada) or 1-336-970-5534 (International). You will need to
provide the Product Serial Number listed on this screen, along with proof of
reprogramming certification. Alternatively, you may provide an authorized E-
Learn ID/password on the Reactivation dialog and reactivate.
1. After Customer Support verifies your training qualifications and updates
the server, the user will select ‘Reactivate Immediately’ from the Help
Menu.

Allison DOC® updates are stored on Allison’s Allison DOC® Update Server.
NOTE: To receive updates from the Update Server, your PC or
laptop must be connected to the Internet. If your PC uses a proxy
server, see your IT department for instructions.

 Download the new version and update Allison DOC®
 Download the new version to your hard drive and update Allison DOC®

Checking For An Allison DOC® Update


Allison DOC® checks the Allison Update Server for the latest version of the
software. You must have an Internet connection to access the Allison Update
Server.
1. Click on the Software Configuration menu.
2. Click on the Update Application tab — the Application Update window
displays.

3. Click on CHECK FOR UPDATE — Allison DOC® accesses the Allison


Update Server by way of the Internet. If a newer version of Allison
DOC® than the one you are using is found on the update server, the newer
version can be applied to your current Allison DOC® or downloaded to
your hard drive. If a newer version is not found on the server, Allison
DOC® checks your hard drive for a newer version.

NOTE: If the Allison Application Update server cannot be reached,
click the internet link displayed and follow the on-screen directions
to download and run the update function.
4. If an update is available, either from the server or your hard drive, the
CHECK FOR UPDATE button changes to APPLY UPDATE.
5. If your Allison DOC® is up-to-date, a message displays indicating you do
not need to update.
6. If the update server is not available and an update is not stored on your PC
hard drive, a message displays providing the reason for an update not
being available.

1. Click the APPLY UPDATE button — the Update Processing window
displays.
2. The latest version of Allison DOC® is loaded, either from the update
server or from your PC hard drive.
3. As part of the update process, Allison DOC® may display a message

10. Connecting/Disconnecting

10-1. Connecting
NOTE: Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) supports RP1210A
or later compliant devices.
The Connect/Disconnect window establishes the software connection between
Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) and the PCM, DPIM, and ESS. The PCM
consists of two control modules, the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) and the
Transmission Control Module (TCM). The two control modules gather and assess
information, communicate with other controllers via the CAN bus, and issue
commands based upon data provided by the H 40/50 EP sub-systems. The TCM
logs diagnostic trouble codes.
To establish a connection between Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) and
the System:
1. From the Warnings window of Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50

EP™), click the button or click the F4 – Connect


button, or press the F4 key. The Transmission Connect window
appears.

Ensure that Hybrid – H 40/50 EP is selected in the Transmission
Type group box.
Check the SmartConnect option to have Allison DOC® Premium (H
40/50 EP™) attempt to automatically determine how to connect to the
vehicle.
Uncheck the SmartConnect option and click the Connect button to
specify the connection parameters manually.

NOTE: Only the USB devices for the NEXIQ USB-Link, NEXIQ USB-
Link2, Noregon Wireless/USB Translator and Noregon Wireless/USB

Translator 2.0 adapters are tried in the SmartConnect option. To use the
wireless feature for the NEXIQ and Noregon adapters, uncheck
SmartConnect and select appropriate options in the dropdown boxes.
a. Select the Translator Device and Protocol from the drop-down
lists and Click the button.
b. If the Translator Device does not appear on the list, make sure
that the driver software has been installed on your PC and click
the button—the Advanced Communications
Adapter Setup window displays. This dialog box displays all
adapters as described in the installed RP1210 files.

NOTE: Due to the large volumes of data that must be read, the Limit
data connection option, shown above, may be used to limit the data
to proprietary TCM and VCM data only.

Diagnostic data is displayed on several different screens. The seven screens appear
in the Diagnostic Taskbar. Access a screen by clicking on the associated button.

11-1. Diagnostic Trouble Codes & General


Information
A Trouble Code is a pair of two-digit codes, primary and secondary, that indicates
a problem in the transmission. A code is also referred to as a Diagnostic Trouble
Code (DTC), or a fault code. The primary code indicates the type of problem and
the secondary code more closely defines the fault. A Diagnostic Trouble code is
often referred to as a “Trouble Code”, “a DTC”, or “a Code”.

Displaying DTCs and General Information

DTC
The Diagnostic Trouble Code associated with the information being displayed.
Active
Yes or No indicates if the DTC is active. When a code is logged by the System and
the condition causing the code still exists, that code is said to be active; otherwise
the DTC is inactive.
Stop System
Yes or No indicates if the System has issued a Stop System command in response
to the DTC. A Stop System command shuts down the H 40/50 EP and illuminates
the Stop System dash lamp.
Check System
Yes or No indicates if the System has issued a Check System command in response
to the DTC. A Check System command may require degraded performance of the
H 40/50 EP. A Check System command illuminates the Check System dash lamp.

MIL
Yes or No indicates if the Malfunction Indicator Lamp is associated with the DTC.
This column is only visible when connected with a MY14 or later H 40/50 EP.
System Over-Temp
Yes or No indicates if the System has detected an over-temperature condition in
any of the H 40/50 EP components. An over-temperature condition illuminates the
System OverTemp dash lamp and may cause degraded performance of the H 40/50
EP.
Failure Record
A collection of key data points and what their values were at the time the DTC
occurred. A Yes (Y) indicates that a Failure Record is available for the associated
DTC.
Counts
The number of times, up to 7, that the DTC has been logged since the last time
codes were cleared.
Description
Describes the associated DTC.
System ID
Identifies the set of calibrations used by the H 40/50 EP controllers.
TCM Ignition (Wires #)
Indicates the low voltage system ignition voltage.
Oil Level
Indicates the depth of oil in the EV Drive™ sump.
Sump Oil Temp
Indicates the temperature of the oil in the EV Drive™ sump.
Energy Storage Pack Temperature
Indicates the internal temperature of the Energy Storage System.
SPN and FMI
Indicates the set of numbers that identifies an Energy Storage System fault.
Energy Storage System Fault Description
Describes the Energy Storage System fault identified by the SPN and FMI.

Clearing Critical Codes
A critical code is a DTC that, if cleared without the related fault being repaired or
corrected, could damage the H 40/50 EP. A Warning message displays when
requesting to clear a Critical Code.
EXAMPLE: WARNING — clearing code 77 01 without following the proper
service procedure to identify and repair the failed relay could result in damage
occurring to the Energy Storage System and/or the DPIM. Do you wish to
continue?

Performance Complaints
Use the Performance Complaints function when no DTCs are present to
troubleshoot a transmission performance symptom.

CMC Descriptions
The Customer Modifiable Constants are displayed on the TCM/Calibration
Information screen, and can be reprogrammed (see section 14 of this manual). The
values include the following:
Fast Idle Speed 1
Speed of the engine when Fast Idle is selected
Output Speed Indicator - Turn On Speed
Speed at which the output speed indicator on the dash will light (if the dash is so
equipped) to indicate that the vehicle is moving and that functions dependent on
0mph vehicle speed (such as the wheelchair ramp) will no longer operate.
Output Speed Indication - Turn Off Speed

Speed at which the output speed indicator on the dash will turn off (if the dash is so
equipped) to indicate that the vehicle has come to a stop and that functions
dependent on 0mph (such as the wheelchair ramp) will now operate.
F to R and R to F Shifts
Enables the user to either Allow or Inhibit shifting from Forward to Reverse
without shifting through Neutral. With either selection, the shift must occur at
0mph.
N/V
The ratio based on the following calculation:
[(axle ratio) X (tire revolutions per mile)]/60 = N/V
This ratio is used to determine the maximum vehicle limits for the following:
 Maximum Forward Vehicle Speed
 Maximum Reverse Vehicle Speed
 Acceleration Control
If the N/V CMC is not successfully received from both the TCM and VCM, or if
the values received from the TCM and VCM are not within 0.1 of each other, the
N/V value will be displayed as “Error.”
If “Error” is displayed, the user should attempt to reprogram the CMC. If
reprogramming the CMC does not fix the error, further service is required.
Maximum Forward Vehicle Speed
Maximum speed that the vehicle can be driven in forward range
Maximum Reverse Vehicle Speed
Maximum speed that the vehicle can be driven in reverse range
Acceleration Control
In vehicles with pre-2006 software, acceleration control is displayed as a numerical
value that represents the rate of acceleration (a smaller acceleration control number
means that the acceleration is slower at take-off). In vehicles with 2006 software
and later, acceleration control is displayed as one of five values:
 HyEconomy
 Economy
 HyStandard
 Performance
 HyPerformance
HyEconomy will give the user the slowest acceleration at take-off, and
HyPerformance will give the user the fastest acceleration at take-off. The rate of
acceleration at take-off affects the fuel consumption of the vehicle.

HUSH Mode Enable Select
This is a drop-down menu that is only displayed on Allison DOC® Premium (H
40/50 EP™) if the computer is connected to (or the snapshot was taken on) a
vehicle with HUSH mode installed. This CMC allows the user to select by what
method HUSH Mode will be triggered on the vehicle. The drop-down options are
as follows:
 Disabled
 Manual Mode
 Auto HW Input
 Auto CAN Input
Inverter Standby
This is a drop-down option that lets the user either Enable or Disable Inverter
Standby. If the user decides to Enable Inverter Standby, one or both of the
inverters may disable when the engine is at idle and the vehicle speed is 0mph to
reduce fuel consumption.
Battery Prognostics Indicator Enable
This is a drop-down option that lets the user either Enable or Disable Battery
Prognostics Indicator. This CMC is only available on model year 2012 and later
systems.
Engine Stop-Start (ES-S) Enable
This is a drop-down option that lets the user either Enable or Disable Automatic
ES-S. This CMC is only available on model year 2016 and later systems.
Operator Override for Engine Stop-Start (ES-S) Enable
This is a drop-down option that lets the user either Enable or Disable Operator
Manual Override for Automatic ES-S. This CMC is only available on model year
2016 and later systems.

NOTE: If the CMCs and/or SID were not successfully retrieved


during the connection process, the CMC values are N/A and the SID
value is Unknown. Latest support model year is assumed.
If this occurs and the connection is Bluetooth or Wireless, attach the
USB cable and reconnect with a wired connection.

11-6. The Strip Chart
Displaying the Strip Chart
The Strip Chart is a graph that tracks, over time, changes in selected data as the
changes occur.
The data-against-time data stream is continuous regardless of the Strip Chart mode
selected.
To display the Strip Chart click the Strip Chart button from the Diagnostics
Taskbar

1. Select up to fifteen Diagnostic Data types from the left-hand column or


select a preconfigured data group from the “Saved Strip Charts” pull-
down menu and click the Load button.
2. Choose a color for the trace of the data selected or use the default color.

NOTE: Contrasting colors are easier to see on the strip chart.

3. Click OK.

Data Trace Identification


The selected data is assigned a color on the graph. The name of the data and its
corresponding color is displayed in the upper-right corner of the Strip Chart
display.

X-axis Scaling
The passage of time in seconds is indicated on the X-axis, horizontal bottom of the
graph. As time passes, data lines on the graph move to the right. The Strip Chart
displays 10 seconds of data at a time. If playing back recorded data, the VCR
Control window displays the Total File Time and the Current File Time, in
minutes. Total File Time is the total length of the recording. Current File Time is
the time elapsed since you started the playback.

Y-axis Scaling
The Y-axis, vertical left side of the Strip Chart, displays a range of values based
upon the data selected for display. If you select data having different types of
measurements such as input rpm and engine cooling temperature, a divisor,
preceded by a slash (/), displays next to the data that requires calculation to
determine the correct value. For example: input speed and engine cooling
temperature. RPM is displayed on the Y-axis, from 0 to 4000. To determine the
engine cooling temperature, divide the value of the engine cooling temperature
trace by 15.7. An easier method is to use the Strip Chart Cursor mode, which
calculates the adjustment and displays the correct value.

Strip Chart Modes


Several data display modes are selectable from the tool bar in the upper left portion
of the Strip Chart window. These modes, or commands, allow you to control the
data display on the Strip Chart. To change to a particular mode, simply click the
desired mode icon. When a mode other than Plot is selected, the data display at that
time is frozen; but the data-against-time stream continues in the background. When
Plot is re-selected, the data-against-time stream is re-entered at the time Plot was
re-selected.
The control modes are:
Plot
Plot is the default Strip Chart mode, where data lines move from left to right across
the Strip Chart graph.
Pause
Pauses the plot. Data continues to be collected, but not displayed in the graph.
Click the PLOT button to resume normal plotting.

Zoom Out All Axes


Each click on the Zoom Out All Axes button increases the values displayed to the
left of the graph, which increases the area displayed and provides a less detailed
display than the standard plot mode. Click the PLOT button to resume normal
plotting.

Zoom In All Axes


Each click on the Zoom In All Axes button decreases the values displayed to the
left of the graph, which decreases the area displayed and provides a more detailed

display than the standard plot mode. Click the PLOT button to resume normal
plotting.

Cursor
Cursor mode allows you to place a vertical line at any point in the graph. A
window containing the Y, vertical, value of the selected trace displays next to the
cursor. Use drag and drop to position the cursor line. The Y value is for the data
selected from the list relating a line color to data. The cursor line color is the same
as the selected data line.

Print
Sends the Strip Chart data display to your printer.

Change Background button


For higher contrast, the Change Background button cycles among white, yellow,
and black. If printing the strip chart, it is suggested that white is chosen as the
background color to conserve printer ink.

Annotate button (playback only)

Allows the technician to add notes to a strip chart that will be printed and analyzed.
After a note is added, the technician can move it to any location on the stopped
strip chart. The technician may also save these annotations for future reference.
Once saved, the technician can use the Analog dialog to go to saved annotations.
Annotations are saved in a separate file using the original name of the playback file
and a file extension of “Annotations.xml”. When emailing playback files, you
should also email the corresponding Annotations.xml file. If you use the

SnapshotE-mail functionality to attach playback files, the corresponding
Annotations.xml file will automatically be attached if applicable.

11-7. The Custom Data Monitor


Displaying the Custom Data Monitor
The information to be displayed in the Custom Data Monitor window may be
selected by adding or removing data items or parameters to the display.
The Custom Data Monitor window is the same as the Data Monitor window, except
that only the selected data is displayed. Selected data must be re-selected each time
a new diagnostic session is connected unless a Custom Data List is saved. The ESS
data is also available on the custom data monitor.
To select Custom Data Monitor data types click the Custom Data Monitor button
from the Diagnostics Taskbar

1. Select the desired Diagnostic Data items or the desired group of data
items.
2. Click the button or double click the selection—the selected data
items appear in the right-hand column.

Engineering Units
Engineering Units section includes SAE J1939 Message and Parameter supported
by the Allison Transmission controller. This information consists of all Messages
and Parameters the transmission control module broadcasts and receives via J1939.
Refer to the Allison Transmission DATALINK COMMUNICATIONS technical
document, available on the Allison Transmission Extranet, for specific information
for each of the displayed J1939 Messages/Parameters.
 Parameter—displays SAE J1939 Messages the TCM can receive/send.
Each SAE J1939 Message can be expanded to display the corresponding
SAE J1939 parameter.
TOOL TIP: Each SAE J1939 Message is displayed in its
acronym form. In order to see the complete/long description of
a Message, place the cursor (do not click) over its acronym, and
a tool tip is displayed.

Since each Message can be broadcasted from different Source Addresses


(SA), the tool displays every detected SA that can initiate a given
Message. Consequently, if the user is interested in finding a particular
J1939 parameter (for example, Percent Load at Current Speed), the first
step would be to find out which J1939 Message contains that parameter
(EEC2: Electronic Engine Controller # 2), and second to see if Databus

Viewer has detected that message in the databus. If detected, the Databus
Viewer will display the SA of the controller sending that particular
message. At this point, the user can expand that message to display the
parameter of interest.

Using the Reset Adaptives


Adaptives need to be reset only if a new component is installed or if instructed to
do so by H 40/50 EP Service Engineering. The adaptives are used for the
following purposes:
 Clutch Adaptives—Adjust clutch fill time as a function of temperature
 Battery Adaptives—Adjust battery amp-hour per hour usage in ESS
 Accelerator Pedal Adaptives—Adjust the voltage offset (what voltage
defines 0% throttle input)
 Main Boost Adaptives—Adjust fill time as a function of temperature

12-4. Clutch Test


Testing Clutch 1 and Clutch 2
The H 40/50 EP Clutch Test uses a software toolbox window to activate the clutch
tests.

NOTE: To start the clutch test, the vehicle must be in Neutral with
the brake applied and the engine on.
NOTE: Only one clutch may be tested at a time.

Enable the H 40/50 EP Clutch Test by:


1. Selecting the Action Request drop-down menu.

8. Stop the clutch test by selecting Neutral on the Shift Selector and clicking
the button of the clutch being tested. The test is over when the clutch
being tested is labeled “OFF” and the vehicle is in Neutral.

12-5. Motor A and Motor B Spin Tests


Testing Motors A and B

NOTE: To operate a motor spin test, the engine must be off.

The Motor Spin tests verify that the motors spin when commanded and that they
spin in the direction commanded. The Motor A and Motor B Spin Tests use a
software toolbox window to spin the selected motor clockwise or counter-
clockwise.
Enable the Motor A or Motor B Spin Test by:
1. Selecting the Action Request drop-down menu.
2. Selecting Motor A Spin Test or Motor B Spin Test — the Spin Test
toolbox displays.

The DTC Floating Window displays all DTCs that are listed on the Trouble Code
window and whether the code is active or inactive. When selected, this floating
window is displayed on any active window of DOC.
To display the DTC Floating Window:
1. Select the Action Request drop-down menu
2. Select DTC Floating Window—the DTC Floating Window displays.

2. Selecting Reset Service Indicator — a dialog box displays asking you to
confirm

13. Snapshots

13-1. Recording a Snapshot


Snapshots record all data being tracked, allowing you to save the data for playback.
At start up Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) automatically begins receiving
data. Data is not saved continuously unless a trigger option is selected in the
Record Options window or the F6 key is pressed.
If no data bus traffic is detected for 6 seconds, Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50
EP™) assumes the vehicle ignition has been turned off, recording is halted, and the
Ignition Off window displays.

 Click NO to not save the recording.


 Click YES to save the recording — the Save As window displays.

If you close Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) during a recording session
the following window displays—

 Click NO to not save the recording
 Click CANCEL to return to Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™)

NOTE: Data is recorded in 30-minute blocks or until the maximum


size of the file has been reached. If a session lasts more than 30
minutes, data recorded at the beginning of the session is lost. This
function is similar to adding a ball to a tube filled with balls. The
new ball pushes the oldest ball out of the end of the tube.

To record a snapshot:
1. Click the F5 –Trigger Recording button, or press the F5 key or
immediately begin recording
Or, to set up the recording options
1. Select the Snapshot drop-down menu
2. Select Record.
3. Select Recording Options—the Record Options window displays.

4. Select one of the following trigger conditions to start recording data:
 When this Trouble Code appears, remember this session. You
must select a Trouble Code from the drop-down list. If the
Trouble Code entered occurs, the session is recorded.
 When any Trouble Code appears, remember this session. The
session is recorded if any Trouble Codes occur.
 Trigger Now. Recording begins immediately after you click OK.
 Update record option; do not trigger snapshot. No session is
recorded. The current session is not recorded, but the record
options are saved for future recording purposes.
5. Determine whether or not a snapshot session will be triggered when the
Energy Storage System Data is requested or if a bookmark will be inserted
when the Energy Storage System Data is requested. The default setting is
that a snapshot session will be neither triggered nor bookmarked if the
Energy Storage System Data is requested.
6. A snapshot can be recorded up to thirty minutes before or after a trigger
event. The default times are five minutes before and ten minutes after a
trigger event.
7. Click OK.

F3 – Trigger Snapshot/Bookmark
F5 –Trigger Snapshot/Bookmark is a feature that allows you to start recording
data or bookmark a position for future reference if a data recording has already
been started. If a snapshot has not been started yet, the F5 button is labeled
“Trigger Snapshot.” If a snapshot is currently being recorded the F5 button is
labeled “Bookmark.” Bookmarks are assigned a sequential number in the order in
which they were inserted into the playback file. In addition to their bookmark
number, bookmarks are associated with a time relative to the length of the
recording. To insert a bookmark while recording data either press the F5 keyboard
key or click on the F5 –Trigger Snapshot/Bookmark button.

NOTE: If a recording has not been started and a bookmark is


inserted, recording starts immediately and ignores all record options.
Bookmark #1 and a time stamp are set to the beginning of the file.

NOTE: The TRIGGER SNAPSHOT button text changes to display


the next Bookmark #.

13-2. Stopping/Saving Playback Files


1. Click the F6 - Stop Recording button or press the F6 key.
2. Select Record.
3. The confirmation window displays.
4. Click YES.
The Save As window displays.

5. Type a log file filename. Do not type a filename extension (example –
Alpha5, NOT alpha5.aed).
NOTE: To save a recording in a folder other than the Logs folder,
navigate to the desired folder before clicking the SAVE button.

13-3. Playing Back Snapshots


Snapshot playback provides data to any of the diagnostic views.
A playback file may be opened by double-clicking on the playback file (file
extension .aed) or by:
1. Select the Snapshot drop-down menu
2. Select Playback.
3. Select Open Playback File.

NOTE: Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) breaks any live


connection and the Open File window displays.

4. Navigate to the appropriate directory.
5. Select the playback file to be played (example – playback1).
6. Click OK—the Trouble Code window and the Playback VCR control
window display.

Playback indicators and VCR controls are:


 Meter bar — the percentage of the playback file played.
 Total File Time — the length of the playback file in minutes and seconds
 Current File Time — the elapsed time in minutes and seconds since the
beginning of the file, based on the current location of the meter bar.
Using your mouse pointer, you may click and drag the meter bar to any point
within the file and play the file from that point. Other controls include:

attach them.

13-5. Export ESS Voltage
Allows the user to export ESS subpack voltage data to a comma-delimited file,
presumably to be used in an Excel spreadsheet. Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50
EP™) only exports the voltage data; any other data is not exported. This option is
only valid when the user is in playback mode.
Data contained within a playback file is exported in a comma-delimited format to
allow for inclusion of that data into an Excel or other spreadsheet. The playback
data can be incorporated into a spreadsheet on the host PC or emailed.
1. Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) exports the voltage data to a file in
the following format:
 The file name is the same as the playback file.
 The file type (extension) is ‘.Voltage.csv’.
 The fields are comma delimited.
 The folder for the exported data is the same folder that contained the
playback file.

13-6. Export
Allows the user to export user-selected data to a comma-delimited file, presumably
to be used in an Excel spreadsheet. This option is only valid when the user is in
offline mode.
Data contained within a playback file is exported in a comma-delimited format to
allow for inclusion of that data into an Excel or other spreadsheet. The playback
data can be incorporated into a spreadsheet on the host PC or emailed.

1. User first selects the playback file and then the data items to be exported.
2. Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) exports the user-selected data to a
file in the following format:
 The file name is the same as the playback file.
 The file type (extension) is ‘.csv’.
 The fields are comma delimited.
 The folder for the exported data is the same folder that contained the
playback file.

 If a maximum 65530 records are exported, the current export file is closed
and a new export file is started with a sequential number, starting with 1,
added to the file name.

14. System Reprogramming

14-1. Reprogramming the TCM


H 40/50 EP reprogramming is enabled after an E-Learn ID/password or proof of
training is supplied to Allison Customer Support.
The Customer Modifiable Constants (CMCs) on the System/Calibration
Information screen can be modified by using the Reprogramming capability.
To access the reprogramming window, select the Reprogram drop-down menu. If a
snapshot is being recorded, the user will be prompted to save the file. If CMCs
cannot be read from the system, “Unable to retrieve CMCs” displays and the
Reprogram System window is not displayed.

 CMC Item Name — name of the CMC.
 Value — the current value of the CMC.
 Units — the units in which the value is measured.

1. Click on the “Select One” drop-down arrow in the data select window.
2. Highlight a list name
3. Click Load to load the list

To reprogram N/V value using the N/V calculator

1. Click on the button in the Value cell of the N/V CMC to display
the N/V calculator
2. Type in the axle ratio and tire revolutions per mile in the N/V ratio screen.

Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) Demos allow you to observe and explore
Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) functions without Allison DOC® being
connected to an H 40/50 EP. The initial Demo display is the Trouble Code window
and the Playback Control window. Entering Demo mode breaks any active
connection to an H 40/50 EP.

To use the Allison DOC® Premium (H 40/50 EP™) Demos:

From the Warnings window, click the button. The Demo file is also
available in the Help menu. When the data from the Demo file is finished loading,
the Trouble Code window displays.

Adding Licenses
To add additional licenses and capabilities to Allison DOC®, enter appropriate
License Key in the Subscription Licenses area and click the (RE)ACTIVATE

NOTE: Prior to clicking the (RE)ACTIVATE button, change any
of the information in this dialog to update user license information.

Resets all license information on the system.
Once this step is completed, Allison DOC® will exit and will not function until a

17-13. Reactivate Immediately


Attempts to reactivate the Allison DOC® application immediately using the license
key(s) currently in use on the system.
This function can be useful if the PC has been disconnected from the Internet and is
nearing the end of the reactivation period as noted in the status bar.

Click the Yes button to reactivate, or No to cancel.
