Ting keeps doing his thing By Terry Bernal

DAILY JOURNAL STAFF

Max Ting finished his high school golf

career with a flourish.
The Menlo School senior found himself in
contention for an individual championship at
the California Interscholastic Federation Boys’
Golf Championship. On the 18th hole of the
day May 30 at San Gabriel Country Club, and
what would be the final hole of his high school
career, Ting’s second stroke landed himself in
the bunker of the par-4, 395-foot hole.
Ting marched into the sand and chucked a
wedge shot onto the green — and in. It would
stand as the last shot of Ting’s Menlo career
for a tournament-closing birdie. Not only did
it lock up a second-place finish individually, it
also landed Menlo third place in the team com-
petition.
“That was cool,” Menlo head coach Gary
Missel said. “We needed that shot to finish
third in the state.”
While Ting was already well on his way to
his third straight Daily Journal Boys’ Golfer of
the Year honor, that result sealed the deal. Not
only was it the best finish of any Menlo boys’
golf team in the history of the program, it
marked the first time the Knights had even
reached the state tourney as a team.
