Name:

Refusal Skills
Suggestions on How to Say “No”:

1. Decide ahead of time

If possible, decide ahead of time how you feel about something (drugs, sex, etc.),
and stick to it. You have control over your choices. Don’t allow someone else to
make decisions for you.

2. Be friendly, yet firm

It is possible to be assertive and confident without being snobbish.

3. Be honest
You should not have to lie to avoid doing something you don’t want to do or don’t
think is right. Simply state the truth and leave it at that.

4. Speak only for yourself

You are not responsible for everyone else’s actions. Don’t feel that you must tell
others what to do (unless they are harming you or someone else). Simply refuse to
participate.

5. Suggest an alternative
If you feel uncomfortable or don’t wish to do something suggest an alternative (Ex: “I
don’t want a beer; I’d like a pop instead.”)

6. Affirm the person

Separate the activity from the person. Let the person know that you still care about
them, but you don’t want to participate in the activity.

7. Appeal to possible consequences

If someone asks you to break the law or do something that makes you feel
uncomfortable, explain the possible consequences and your feelings about those
consequences.

8. Accept the possibility of rejection

Even if you decline graciously and don’t condemn your friends, someone may resent
and even reject you anyway. You must determine if this is truly a friendship.

Question:
What refusal skill do you need to work on and why?
