In this dissertation I develop a social theory of heritage practice into an ethical

framework of “shared heritage” (Natsheh et al. 2008a,2008b, 2008c,2008d; 2008e, 2008f;
Ya’ari 2010). I understand shared heritage as a creative cultural strategy that n anticipates
the future while fostering an ethos of coexistence. Central to this framework is
my recognition of two performative aspects of heritage: (1) its capability to intervene in or
perpetuate alienating conditions of modernity; and (2) its capacity to unite and divide
communities to instill love and hatred. When approaching the question of how we
should practice heritage, I start by making a case for the synchronous human need
for heritage as being the fundamental basis of our ethics, rather than singularly focusing on
the substance of heritage. In the following sections, I unpack these two features further: the
anticipatory strategy of heritage as a means to intervene in alienation and the
complications of a moral imperative for community coexistence

Michael Thompson's Rubbish Theory explains how the values of objects change and that to understand
how we value objects we need to understand 'rubbish', that is, objects which hold no value. He
explained that most objects lose value after they are created and eventually become rubbish. However,
there are some objects that maintain their value, which he calls 'durables'. His theory explains how
some objects move from rubbish to having durable value. When this theory is adapted to illustrate the
multiple values attributed to objects at heritage sites, it is possible to explain how heritage tourism can
result in conflict at a destination and how durable objects can lose their value, which is not possible
according to Thompson.

On the study of Ahmed(2017), results shows that about 28% of respondents perceive that the
local residents’ awareness of the importance of the national heritage is average, less than one
quarter perceive is it as low .This result indicates how the awareness of the national heritage is
modest among local residents. This study aims to identify the degree of students’ awareness of
the national heritage, to discover the roles of schools in raising awareness of the national
heritage, to discover the degree of student satisfaction about the roles played by these schools
responsible for boosting awareness of national heritage. From a familial perspective, it is
apparent, that natural heritage is not in the top priorities of interests. The awareness of the
importance of the national heritage from the part of local residents is not satisfactory. There is
no statistically significant difference between gender, type of school regarding the role of school
in developing the cultural heritage awareness, evaluation of students of teachers information
about heritage, and effectiveness of curriculum to raise awareness of the importance of national
heritage. There is no statistically significant relationship between the place of residence and the
perception of the level of awareness of the importance of the national heritage at a significant
level of (0.01). There is a statistically significant contribution for familial interest in heritage in
predicting the personal interest in local heritage with a value of significance (0.000). The
results of this study have several practical implications related to efforts that should be exerted
to the raise the local residents’ awareness of the national heritage, starting from the pre-
university period which is considered as the basic stage to form the mentality of students
regarding their historical and natural environment.

Mazilu(2014) summarized that cultural landscapes contribute to local and regional identity and reflect
the history and interaction between man and nature. Therefore, they have considerable value, for
example as tourist attractions. Maintaining these cultural landscapes is very important, but it should not
manifest excessively, that is to make impossible economic, touristic exploitation, etc. In some cases, it is
required to protect exceptional sites. In other cases, whole cultural landscapes must be maintained or
rehabilitated, because due to overexploitation they show visible signs of degradation. Not incidentally,
the use of the two terms landscape and culture/cultural semantically was meant to express clearly and
in an integrating manner the anthropogenic intervention in the transformation of the geographical
landscape, thus recognizing its alarming ability to transform the natural. Over time, both internationally
and nationally, its research, definition, analysis and classification have stirred beneficial controversy, the
multitude of opinions expressed supporting the shaping of the field's theoretical and practical
importance. In the last period, partly under the impetus of socio-economic and political (legislative)
factors, the cultural landscape has begun to receive increased attention at both scientific and legislative
level, embodied in works with a specific character. Thus, following ratification by Romania of the
European Convention on Landscape (2000) and our country's participation in various community
programs of scientific research, considerations and conceptual approaches on this subject were given a
new dimension both in terms of individual scientific research as well as in the research employed
(integrated) in community projects, the schools and trends researching the landscape (German, French,
Russian, Anglo-Saxon) highlighting various theoretical and pragmatic approaches and the outstanding
contributions in defining it.With population's sensitization to environmental issues, public awareness, in
terms of value of cultural landscapes, increases. Another big challenge is the conflict between economic
and conservation values using existing resources in an unbalanced manner. Also, historic city centers are
at risk of degradation when economic factors are required that can cause transport infrastructure or
building investments.
