TRANSFORMER INSTALLATION.
1.0 PURPOSE
The purpose of this procedure is to describe the method for installation &
testing of oil filled transformers.
2.0 SCOPE
This procedure shall be applicable for installation & testing of oil filled
transformers, both hermetically sealed and conservator type.
3.0 REFERENCE
4.0 DEFINITIONS
5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1 Responsibility
5.1.1 The responsibility for carrying out this Method Statement shall be that of
the Discipline Engineer/ Foremen, unless otherwise specifically mentioned
in this procedure. The Quality Engineer/ Discipline Engineer/ Foremen
shall be responsible for inspection & testing.
5.2 Preparation
5.2.1 The type, model, rating etc., of the transformer to be installed shall be
identified from the applicable electrical drawings / specifications.
5.2.3 The packing list shall be verified against the items for completeness of
supply. Any item supplied loose during shipping shall be collected,
assembled & installed after the installation of the main equipment, as per
the instructions of the manufacturer.
5.3.2 While filling the radiator with oil, it shall be ensured that air is not trapped
inside the fins. The oil is filled in from the bottom side, keeping the vent
plug on top open. When the air is replaced with oil, the valve on the top is
opened and vent plug closed.
5.3.3 After filling the oil, joints, welds, fins, bushing etc., on the radiator shall be
checked and it shall be ensured that such areas are free from leaks.
5.3.4 Where cooling fan is provided in the radiator, it shall be fixed as per the
manufacturer’s instructions.
5.4.1 The conservator, if supplied loose shall be assembled & installed, as per
the instructions of the manufacturer.
5.4.2 All loose accessories viz. Winding temperature probes, oil temperature
probes, current transformer and indicating instruments shall be assembled
and mounted as per the instructions of the manufacturer.
5.4.3 All controls, including various accessories shall be assembled, wired and
terminated in the marshalling box, as per the control wiring diagram.
5.4.4 The breather shall be fixed and it shall be filled with good quality
desiccated silica gel, as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
5.5.1 Small transformers are normally shipped with oil, hence only topping up is
required. In case of hermetically sealed transformers, topping up also
shall not be necessary.
5.5.2 Oil filling for large transformers shall be carried out using clean filtered oil
only. Topping up of oil shall be carried out by an appropriate method.
Using a filtering machine is the most preferred method.
5.5.3 The oil level in the tap changer compartment, if applicable, shall be
topped-up.
5.6.1 When bus ducts are used for establishing connections between
transformer & sinter gear, the alignment of it with transformer shall be
verified and connected as per the applicable drawings. It shall be ensured
that there is no mechanical strain on transformer bus rings.
5.6.2 Incoming & outgoing cables shall be terminated as per the drawings in
accordance with the Method Statement for Cable Installation & Testing M &
E MST- 001/ REV. 0.
5.6.3 Control cables from the transformer marshalling shall be installed as per
the applicable drawings in accordance with the Method Statement for
Cable Installation & Testing M & E MST- 001/ REV. 0.
5.6.4 Control & power cabling between on load tap changer & remote tap
changer control panel shall be installed as per the applicable drawings.
5.6.5 The cabling to cooling fans provided shall be installed as per the
applicable drawings.
5.7 Earthing
5.7.2 All metallic non-current carrying parts of the transformer shall be bonded to
the earth at least at two different locations, as per the applicable drawings.
The earthing & bonding shall be installed & tested in accordance with
the Method Statement for Earthing System Installation & Testing M & E
MST- 003/ REV. 0.
5.8 Testing
5.8.1 Initial checks on the installed transformer, as detailed in the format for
Transformer Installation Check Sheet M & E QC~Form- 010-01/ REV. 0
shall be carried out and results recorded.
5.8.2 Dielectric strength of the oil from the transformer tank, tap changer and top
up oil supplied in drums shall be tested and results recorded on the format
for Transformer Test Sheet M & E QC~Form- 010-02/ REV. 0.
5.8.3 Ratio test shall be carried out by applying low voltage on high voltage side
and measuring voltage on LV side. The test shall be carried out on all taps
and results shall be recorded on the format for Transformer Test Sheet M &
E QC~Form- 010-02/ REV. 0. Voltage continuity on LV side during process
of tap changing shall be ascertained for transformer filled with on load tap
changers.
5.8.4 Vector group test shall be carried out and the group ascertained. The
results shall be recorded on the format for Transformer Test Sheet M & E
QC~Form- 010-02/ REV. 0.
5.8.5 Buchholz relay shall be tested for the proper functioning of the alarm & trip
contacts. Clean & dry air shall be used for the testing.
5.8.6 Oil & winding temperature probes & indicators shall be calibrated with a
known thermo meter and results recorded.
5.8.8 The operation of the on load tap changer shall be verified manually and
from the remote tap changer panel. It shall be ensured that auto operation
5.8.9 It shall be ensured that the position indicated on the remote tap changer
panel coincides with the actual tap position.
5.8.10 Earth resistance of body to earth and neutral to earth shall be measured &
its values shall be recorded.
5.9 Acceptance
5.9.2 On completion of the checks / tests, the records shall be signed by the
Discipline Supervisor / Testing Engineer. If contractually required, the
Customer Representative’s signature shall be obtained on the records for
acceptance.
