1.0 PURPOSE
2.0 SCOPE
This procedure shall be applicable for all Current Transformers and Voltage
Transformers used in electrical equipment for metering and protection.
3.0 REFERENCE
4.0 DEFINITIONS
5.0 PROCEDURE
5.1 Responsibility
5.1.1 The responsibility for carrying out this Method Statement shall be that of the
Discipline Engineer/ Foremen, unless otherwise specifically mentioned in this
procedure. The Quality Engineer/ Discipline Engineer/ Foremen shall be
responsible for inspection & testing.
5.1.2 In case of conflicting requirements for the testing with the manufacturer’s
instructions or Customer’s specifications, then such requirements shall
prevail in addition to the non-conflicting requirements of this procedure.
5.2.1 The type and rating of the CT / VT provided in the switchgear shall be
checked to ensure conformance with the specifications/drawings.
5.2.3 The wiring circuit shall be checked to ensure proper termination, core
marking and fixing of wiring harness.
5.3.1 The CT secondary star point, if available, shall be checked for its integrity
and earthing of CT secondary shall be checked for compliance with respect
to the wiring diagrams.
5.3.2 The insulation resistance for the secondary of the Current Transformer with
the earth shall be checked and the values shall be recorded. If CT
secondaries are earthed, they shall be temporarily removed while measuring
the resistance.
5.3.3 The ratio check and the magnetisation current testing shall be carried out
and the values shall be recorded. The magnetisation test need not be
carried out for metering cores.
5.4.1 Prior to the primary injection test, it shall be ensured that the Secondary side
circuit is fully connected to form a closed loop.
5.4.2 When protection relays form part of the circuit when the CT is tested, primary
injection test shall also be carried out along with the ratio test.
5.4.3 The operation of the relays / metres shall be checked and the data shall be
recorded under the Relays operated column of Form No. M & E QC~Form-
005-01/ REV. 0.
5.5.1 The star point connection and earthing of the unit for both primary and
secondary shall be checked for compliance with the wiring diagrams.
5.5.2 The rating of the fuse(s) shall be verified for compliance with the
specifications/drawings.
5.5.3 Star point connection shall be temporarily disconnected and the Insulation
Resistance shall be checked and the values shall be recorded for following:
Primary to Secondary
Primary to Earth
Secondary to Earth
5.5.4 The ratio test by applying reduced voltage on the primary side shall be
conducted and the secondary voltage shall be measured and recorded.
5.5.5 If directional relays are provided, then polarity check shall be conducted for
the respective voltage transformers.
5.6 Acceptance
5.6.1 The data as indicated in Current Transformer Test Sheets and Voltage
Transformer Test Sheets, Forms Nos. M & E QC~Form- 005-01/ REV. 0 and
M & E QC~Form- 005-02/ REV. 0 respectively as applicable, shall be filled
in.
5.6.2 Type test / routine test certificate values for the CT / VT provided by the
manufacturer, if available, shall be compared with the field test values of the
CT / VT for conformance.
